fred phelps- and his cultso i recently stumbled upon fred phelps- how unfortunate. i guess you could call him the king of the bible belt? anyways, i was just browsing through the westboro baptist church's website (godhatesfags.com) because i saw that they are going to protest heath ledger's funeral because he played a gay cowboy...... i am just soo engraged right now that i cannot even think straight. the things these "RELIGIOUS" people say..... i just don't understand; correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the whole point of most of the religious texts-besides believing in god and loving him, blah all that- to teach love, understanding, and forgiveness instead of just pure hate? and if their god hates america so much, why are they still here? why does everyone have to go to hell? is it not considered a sin to damn people to hell? my brother was showing me some youtube videos about fred and we came across this interview with two of his grandchildren. for a brief moment, let me just paraphrase what they were saying: when soldies die, god laughs; quit idolizing the dead, they are already burning in hell; it's a good thing the world hates us, they hated jesus, that's how we know what we're doing is god's will... ect. ect. ect. i'll just let that sink in for a moment......... here's the video link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=-gX-vQ5sMOw now i know that most of the people who think like this only do so because that is what they were taught. and quite frankly, that just bothers the hell out of me. i just cannot fathom what these people are thinking... i don't know. i needed to get that off my chest. i know that when fred phelps dies, there is going to be a huge protest at his funeral. i think i just might have to go. Disgusting
There is no excuse for this. Hopefully Ledger's funeral will have tight security which I'm sure they will.

A few verses they might want to bear in mind
Matthew 6: 14-15
Matthew 7: 15-20
John 8: 7-11
Someone's going to hell here, and it isn't Heath.
Phelps and co -a blessing in disguise
I think what they're doing is disgusting and vile. You'd have to be heartless to protest a dead man's funeral. I came across this interesting site which actually explains how Phelps helps gay rights. Thinking about it, it does seem to be saying something substantial.
http://www.phagsforphelps.com/outcolumn.htm
This column was printed in out magazine.
Part of the proceeds of this column will go towards establishing the "Phags 4 Phelps Dephense Phund."
Why? Because Pastor Fred Phelps, the most tenacious homophobe in the world today, has done more for gay Americans than most activists.
I first became aware of the Phelps clan in the mid '90's when they came to protest Atlanta's pride festival. I so admired the graphic simplicity of their neon posters depicting stick figures having anal sex that I actually tried, without luck, to purchase one of them from Phelp's godhatesfags.com website.
Soon afterward, Phelp's burst onto the worldwide mass media stage when his congregants (the majority of whom are made up of family members -- currently inbreeding to make more) showed up to protest Matthew Shepard's funeral. Since then, they've repeatedly grabbed the media spotlight via actions ranging from protesting a 12-year-old's school essay about Ellen DeGeneres to rejecting an invitation to debate in Ireland because "leprechauns…are likely to be fags."
In today's world, with so many different threats and causes to choose from, it's hard not to admire such dogged single-mindedness of purpose. Fred and his spawn have traveled to all 50 states and several foreign countries to spread their message of anti-stick figure anal sex. They've racked up more frequent flier miles than most circuit party regulars. But to me, Fred will always be the down-home obsessive kook who called me a "vile blasphemous sodomite whore" on a sunny June day in Atlanta.
Which is why I felt betrayed when my Freddie shifted his picketing focus from AIDS victims' funerals to the funerals of U.S. soldiers returning in body bags from Iraq. He seemed to be going off message. Sure, he still preached that the soldiers had died because they were fighting for a country that allowed stick figures to have anal sex, but it's a bit of a meandering chain of logic. Not like the old Fred, who'd spit directly in my face.
But I forgave him. The events of 9/11 affected people in different ways. For instance, it caused our president to see imaginary weapons of mass destruction and send thousands of American men and women to their deaths -- deaths followed by funerals that could then be protested by Fred until Congress passed and George signed the Respect for America's Fallen Heroes Act, which bans protests within 300 feet of national cemeteries during funerals. And I couldn't help feel a little tinge of pity when Fred recently received a $10.9 million smackdown from the U.S. District Court in Baltimore for inflicting emotional distress on the father of a fallen soldier.
I'm not setting up the Phelps Dephense Phund because I pity Fred. I'm sending Fred money because I respect him more than George Bush and other likeminded homophobes in sheep's clothing.
Why? Because I would much rather have Fred Phelps be the public face of homophobia than "tolerant" homophobes like Mitt Rommey, who preaches "respect for diversity" while recently insinuating that dead heterosexual parents would raise children better than live gay men and women.
I would much rather have Fred spewing undiluted hatred on CNN than listen to all of the front-running Democratic presidential candidates tap dancing around gay marriage like Larry Craig on a layover. Unlike them, the only "middle of the road" position Fred takes is the one blocking the hearse.
I would much rather have Fred's kooky daughter Shirley raging on FOX News than George Bush and Congress not being enraged by two decades of Phelp's AIDS funeral protests. (Now they decide that protesting funerals is not okay? But only those of America's fallen military heroes -- no gays allowed.)
Yes, I want Fred Phelps free to walk the streets verbally assaulting stick figures having anal sex because Fred Phelps, as crazy as he is, is an honest homophobe.
By not hiding his repugnance under a bushel, Pastor Phelps is one of America's most effective gay activists. Middle America finally gets to see what homophobia actually looks like when it's stripped of such polite, compromising words like "tolerance," "states rights," and "activist judges." And for that, we should be grateful.
I believe that each time Fred Phelps gets a little airtime, a fallen AIDS hero gets his wings.

I found these quotes on this site and they're kind of interesting.

Hmmm...
You know...
This is an interesting take on the situation with Phelps.
Whenever I read about his nonsense, I am saddened that I'm even aware of who he is...that I even know he exists....and that his name is recognized by so many people. He reminds me of a child, a dysfunctional child, who craves attention and doesn't care if it's positive or negative.
Thank you for sharing this...
Screw the Phelps Cult
It's such a shame that this is the face Phelps puts on his religion. What would possess you to think it would be okay to protest at someone's funeral. Funerals are a time to mourn the loss of a human being, no one should be there to judge. Jeez, someone just died!
And protesting at military funerals? He's lucky the soldiers giving the 21 gun salute don't have real bullets...
I think Phelps might be in for a little surprise when he dies. He and God need to have a little heart to heart if you ask me. I can see God saying "Now hold on just a minute, who do you think you are, ME???!!!!
Phelps will get what is coming to him.
The problem is, people like Phelps and Ann Coulter are continuously given air time. Yes, we have the first amendment, which protects these jerks; however, the media should bear some responsibility in the fact that they can choose what news is. These two people spewing hate is not news. Phelps protesting is not news, people protest all the time. It is what he is protesting about that captures the media's attention. Anytime the word "gay" is muttered in a negative light it is news. However, I do suppose that if the media stopped covering these two pansies, they would videotape themselves and send in the tapes Osama style. Unfortunately, the news media is nothing more than an extension of the Enquirer and TMZ. At least Anderson Cooper and Keith Olberman try to keep it professional 70% of the time (and even they succumb). If I were given a media forum to speak, people would probably hate me too but what I would arouse anger for is not as fun as hating on gay people! That just demands coverage.
Last I heard was that Heath’s funeral (it makes me so sad to say that) was going to be heavily protected so hopefully these goons will not have a leg to stand on. Maybe the paparazzi will do something good for a change and push them out.
Phelps
He really doesn't get that much air time, thankfully.
When Matthew Shepard was murdered, I heard that the Phelps bunch would be protesting at the funeral -- I wrote to every news program and station I could find the address to and made my case why they should not air pictures of their protest. I don't know if I made much of a difference, but Stone Phillips wrote me back and thanked me and offered supportive words. I never saw much coverage of them at the funeral either.
I don't think the media wants to give them any more attention than most Americans do. And really, media coverage doesn't hurt if they're just doing their rantings wherever -- But when it comes to funerals, people just don't like it -- Their 'message' actually helps the Gay Rights cause because all of America thinks they're loonies.

fuel for the fire
he is sad, pathetic, and soulless. not worth one second of any of our time. i'm torn...do we continue to denounce his words and actions and expose him for the charlatan he is...or remain silent in hopes that no fuel for the fire will make it burn itself out?
What gets me is
I agree... and then disagree
Agree:
They've been known around NE Oklahoma (well, if you watch the local news regularly) for years because of their pickets of AIDS patients funerals. In a way it's irritating that fewer cared until they picketed soldiers funerals, but on the other hand I think the fewer people who know about them the better. If someone shouts something hateful and no one is there to hear it, it can only harm them. But at least the awareness has brought out more people to help shield families from these nutters.
Disagree:
I hope not one person shows up for his funeral (besides obviously his family who can't be stopped). Let him pass as though he were unnoticed- any attention paid only makes this people feel stronger.
If , in fact, these people
like Phelps, his followers and anyone of a similar mindset are right and 'we' are all going to Hell, while they will be going to Heaven, all I have to say is, "Haleluya!" I do not want to go to a place full of priggish, narrow minded, prejudice, ignorant people, controlled by their hateful God. I can't think of anything more hellish. I'll gladly go anywhere that they aren't!

If anyone needs more proof as to why Shirley Phelps and Co. are completely out of their minds, just listen to this recently-posted radio interview. You'll be shaking, trust me! But the good news is: she gets completely destroyed.
You are my center when I spin away.
Fear not!
I would hope that you don't
I would hope that you don't judge all of those who live in the Bible Belt by the actions of this lunatic.
That said (and feel free to delete this if you decide it's just blatant advertising), there is a small group trying to make a serious effort to take a one-day stand against Phelps. We're forming the Million "Fag" March, to take place outside the Westboro Baptist Churche in Topeka, KS (where the Phelps' clan calls home) on March 30th.
You can get more info at http://www.millionfagmarch.com
Hope you'll support us and get the word out.
Thanks!
Watch this!
I watched Louis Theroux's documentary on the "Most Hated Family In America" last night (talk about timing!) - he spent 3 weeks with the Phelps family, documenting them from a non-religious point of view. And whilst he managed to keep most of the emotion from his face - you couldn't help but see his "WTF??!!" looks occasionally.
The family is incredibly GLBT fixated. It's....weird. I mean, not even us gay people think about what it means to be gay as much as this family does!
It's disturbing as well - the children are being groomed to follow "Gramps". Louis asked several of Shirley Phelps children if they knew what the signs meant - one said no, and another answered whilst checking with Mom that they were saying what they should. Shirley and Fred can be as mad as they like, but to groom innocent children to hatred....it's sad, and quite frankly abusive. However, they are happy we hate them - cause they reckon being hated means they are getting the message across.
Heath Ledger - from what I could tell yesterday, when we had small coverage of the end of the memorial in the US for Heath - no WBC around what so every - they even managed to keep the photographers/media out.
Supreme Court Sidesteps Anti-Gay Church Motion
(Washington) The US Supreme Court has decided not to get involved in an ongoing legal battle between followers of the Rev. Fred Phelps and the family of a Marine killed in Iraq.
Attorney's for the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church had asked the high court to intervene to block a multi-million dollar judgment handed down in Maryland. The church also has appealed to the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Earlier this month U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett upheld a jury verdict that found Phelps and his two daughters, Shirley Phelps-Roper and Rebecca Phelps-Davis, had invaded privacy with intent to inflict emotional distress on the father of the Marine whose funeral Phelp's Westoboro Church had picketed.
But Bennett chopped the $10 million verdict award to Albert Snyder in half. (story)
Snyder had sued Phelps and his church after church members demonstrated at the funeral of Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder in 2006 in Maryland, and then posted pictures of the protest on their Web site.
The protestors claimed that the war in Iraq is a punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality.
Following a trial a jury awarded Snyder $2.9 million in compensatory damages, $6 million in punitive damages for invasion of privacy and $2 million for causing emotional distress. (story)
Judge Bennett upheld the compensatory damage award but reduced the total punitive damages to $2.1 million.
Attorneys for the church argue their constitutional rights to practice their religion were not considered at trial. They also claim the Phelps family and the church have virtually no assets.
Meanwhile, Bennett has ordered the Phelps family back to court next month for a hearing to determine how much bond they will have to post while the appeal continues.
Lawyers for Synder have argued the family has misrepresented their finances to the court.
Last week Bennett ordered the family to present a certified financial statement prepared by an independent accountant, bank statements and copies of all property deeds.
Westboro's members are made up mostly of Phelps' relatives. Although it professes to be Baptist it is not affiliated with any national Baptist group.
Westboro operates Web sites including GodHatesFags and GodHatesAmerica and has been described as a cult.
Phelps and the church first came to national attention when he organized a protest by his followers outside the 1998 funeral for Matthew Shepherd, the gay college student who was beaten to death in Wyoming. The killing, Phelps' protest, and the reaction of townsfolk led to the play "The Laramie Project."
Church members routinely demonstrate at the funerals of people with AIDS and most recently at the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq.
Westboro Baptist's picketing of soldiers' funerals led Congress and 34 states to enact laws attempting to restrict such protests.
Depending on the outcome of the ruling from the federal appeals court the case could still wind up in the Supreme Court.

heh
Phelp's church is a tiny, pathetic little ant. Seriously. I think he's got a following of a couple hundrd (at most) people and something like 90% of them are his relatives.
The only reason we've even heard of him is 'cause he's gotten so much media attention for being such a primo-dickwad.
I know what you mean about getting angry, furious even, since I've had my own little anger-plosion over the westboro church. Eventually I came to realize that they're not even worth my attention.
However, if you'd like to feel better there's some great clips on youtube...

holy shit. It's one
holy shit.
It's one thing to see a stupid website spouting crap. To see two young women speaking hate with smiles on their faces. very sad
That's so not the same message I got when I read the Bible.
I wish I could get to those girls and tell them that I don't hate them.
I love them with all my fag heart
This shows that parents still have influence on their kids.
Has there ever been a psychological profile of this family?
To the Phelps family, thank you, I have been warned. Guess I'm going to hell.
In person...
Seeing him in person is weird. At first I was angry with him, but after watching him for a few minutes I realized how sad he is. I cannot imagine devoting so much of my energy and life to hatred. What a waste of time.
My grandmother lives in Topeka, and used to teach the teen mothers class at the YWCA, and almost everyday someone from Phelps group is there protesting. She said it took all her energy not to throw something at him most days, but she wouldn't stoop to his level; at least she knew she was a better person than him. I am certainly for free speech, but protesting someone's funeral should be illegal.

Found this link on CNN. There was a counter-protest against the Westboro Baptist Church. :)

Here's a new link from a recent protest. Apparently they decided to protest at a school after 3 students were killed in a fire. Many students gathered and ran them off. :D

Better than...
I can bear them a lot more than religious moderates. (At least they're entertaining.)
The only reason the news media hates his guts more than Falwell's is because they ridicule the military.
Phelps backs up all his claims and behaviour with numerous Bible verses from both Testaments. At least they're somewhat consistent unlike wishy-washy moderates who cherry pick Bible verses or choose to ignore the nasty, violent bits.
Perhaps Christians should rethink their beliefs when it seems that the more devout you are, the crazier you seem (same goes for Muslims, etc.).
_____
"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." -- H. L. MenckenClarification
They are actually ridiculously inconsistent. If you look into the family history, they cherry pick with the best of them. Phelps misinterprets bible verses; there is little of his behavior that is supported by the bible. In fact there are several bible versus that contradict his behavior.
No need to rethink beliefs when it's common knowledge that people will pervert doctrines to support their agendas.
It also seems as if the more crazy you are the more media attention you get. People seem to ignore the devout christians and muslims that protest war or are trying to work to end poverty.
We had these guys protest a
We had these guys protest a man's funeral in our town a month ago... it was disgusting.
Thank goodness for the Patriot Guard, who stood watch at the funeral. Everyone should check them out and what they do, and maybe even join--you don't need a bike or anything. Check out their site here: http://www.patriotguard.org/ They're good people.
oh fred phelps.
unfortunately, im from the same state is phelps. i recently graduated from KU (university of kansas) often referred to as "Gay U" for our high percentage of out students. since we're the most liberal school (that embraces our LGBT community) in kansas phelps and/or his crew shows up at least 6 times a year to protest the opening of humanities buildings (gay people work there) drag shows (gay people... are in it) or you know just everyday normal anti-violence weeks (gay people.. dont like violence?)
phelps and the westboro baptist church do what they do JUST SO everyone will talk about them and go to their website. i almost dont notice the yelling at me that im going to hell as i walk to class anymore. because i know thats what theyre going for... they want us to get all upset and protest against them so we seem just as crazy as them. they LOVE that they're a household name. they LOVE even more that everyone hates them. its sickening, but they do get exactly what they want.
trust me, its not worth it. most of the population of the US thinks WBC are crazy extremists. one thing that tends to be amusing is if you try to befriend them.especially if you offer them lemonade. they hate that.
Video -Fred Phelp's son hit on by gay reporter
It's true - it seems that trying to befriend them only makes them hate you more...

I didn't really know where to put this - so stuffed it here :)
well i watched 'the most hated family in america' and yes, i can see why they're the most hated!
"You will eat your babies." "God hates fags." and those aren't really the worst things they said but yeah. This guy went on about how Princess Diana's a whore and she's gone to hell (and what not) - because she's a "fag enabler". And i admit, after seeing all this, i was happy when the little boy got hit by a can whilst holding up a board saying something like "Dyke USA" or "God hates fags". ha!
But - who's seen it? because there's this one girl that (hated myself for it) i liked. She was different to the rest of the crazy family; and hahahaha we all know she's been tempted! - despite being part of one massive homophobic family, Louis Theroux asked "have you ever been tempted?" and she just got all uncomfortable and said she didn't wanna dwell on the past. She's the only one in the family that's even bothered to rebel against the whole stupid thing! so yeah, i was just saying, is it really stupid to like a homophobe - and member of the most hated family in america?
Here, watch this clip - and watch from 4:50 to see the girl and 8:15 to see the dick that i'm on about :)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTbQ0oGqauQ
fred phelps
when this evil man dies i fully intend to go to his funeral to protest and hold up banners saying - fred phelps is going to hell.
the only people that follow him are his family anyway, the bunch of crazy inbred hate spewers.
