According to this article http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=1168&tag=nl.e539, Microsoft is set to release Windows 7 in the second half of 2009.
To me, this is further validation that Vista was/is a worthless investment. It's also further evidence that Microsoft almost always has to do it twice in order to get it right (in as much as I can call it right).
What are your thoughts?

Vista
Agree. My laptop has Vista and while I really do not mind the system itself, there are just so many problems loading/installing programs that it's not even slightly amusing.
The only investment regarding Vista is the money you have to fork down to 'downgrade' back to XP. :(

It makes sense that they're
It makes sense that they're pushing something out that soon, the gaps between 3.1/95, 95/98, 98/2000 etc etc were no where near like the gap between XP/Vista so I guess they're just getting back to that.
That said, I really don't like Vista so I won't be sad to see it go. Honestly to me it seems like ME version 2 and we all know how well that went...

I have
two computers at home: a toshiba laptob (with 200 gb h/d 1 gb of ram) and an acer (with 320 gb of h/d and 2 gb of ram). They both have windows vista because my last computer (still good and working) had too little hardrive space for the users (being my family), it won't accept me or even the actual admin. of the computer (I'm both) as an administrator, my music, recent software added (anti-virus, autocad, photoshop, i-tunes, zune, word etc) and shut down purposely for no reason on odd days. I compared my latop to that of one of my friends over the summer and his (xp) was running faster than mine. Within seconds his would easily shut down and wouldn't freeze when running too many programs at the same time. My P.C freezes when it runs a cetain amount of information (usually from youtube...videos over 20 mins) and tends to slow down if there's too much network traffic and it still does that. After two months I thought the glitches would stop like it did with my laptop.
Don't get me wrong I miss my XP because the system was/is strong and could put up with such heavy programs and wouldn't freeze up constantly...but I also love the user interface with the Vista and the amount of crap I can shove into my computer without having to worry about it over loading and freezing like it used to in the first two months or so.
If anything microsoft needs to stop doing that. Releasing a new program and forcing everyone to update....usually everyone tends to hate the new software/program/material/product because they tend to be half assed....than they put the old version back because of customer demand and are forced to spend another million on making new products that either do good on the market but are later dumped or have the same degrading effect as the latter. E.I (Zune software 1.3 to zune 2.7 the new program for the zune sucks...good graphics and interface but what the hell is a good update without the basic functions?). They tend to make apple look like geniuses with the Mac and I-phone and 8-12 frukking generations of I-pods.
If anything microsoft needs to start reading the consumer reports rather than look at freaking stocks and sales so they can get their shit right.....I'm still a microsoft person.....I hate macs with an extreme enmity...Yes I can use them but come on that thing's a monster. ;{ :]
Is It true that microsoft owns or shares stock with Apple? Any one?

Fan-friggin'-tastic. We're buying a desktop PC later this year, and of course we're stuck with the "option" (as Harpy mentioned) of paying to downgrade to XP or still paying to get Vista. Shortly thereafter, it'll be an antiquated OS. Argh.
We both have XP on our laptops and I'd much rather stick with that, at least until 7 comes out and then we can see if it's actually worth it. But I can't help thinking we're going to end up with Vista and get to relive the whole Windows ME nightmare.

I hate Vista
It has lots of pretty-looking features, but when it comes down to efficiency, XP definitely seems more productive. If the computers built nowadays ran XP instead of Vista, they’d probably be a lot faster. Oh and don’t get me started on the compatibility issues with Vista. I’m somewhat of an old-school gamer, I love playing DOS games and those few gems released in the early 90s. So for me to have to go through countless emulators just to play a game no bigger than 1 megabyte, it gets really annoying.
And as for this new Windows, they should keep it simple and efficient. Microsoft shouldn’t try so hard to keep up with Apple. I swear I hate Apple so much that Microsoft can create an OS so hideous and blocky, and I’d still stick with it instead of Panther/OSX/Whatever-the-lame-name-they-gave-their-OS.
Vista
I second you jeeo, the compatibility issues drive me insane.
For me, XP was near perfect as far as giving the user the control and at the same time keeping it fairly simple. I don't really see where they are going to go from here.

To everything above. And red-skully candy you make a very very valid point - "If anything microsoft needs to stop doing that. Releasing a new program and forcing everyone to update...." that right there is the CRUX of Microsoft's problem. Apple releases something and people grab on to it and Microsoft runs and release some half-ass program to try to counter Apple. It's so damn annoying! Thereby automatically putting Apple in a position to appear as the leaders in technology. If you're working on something and know it's gonna be good/great, then see it through; don't let another force you to rush it! My blood is beginning to boil here because this has been my biggest peeve with MS so i'll just stop right here!
If ever MS released two awesome OS's that would be Windows 98 and 2000 (how I miss the stability of these). XP took a while to settle but it works pretty well indeed as well.
