MLK - Black Musicians/Singers to Respect and Relish...

After reading Sarah's blog about 11 black actresses to know and love, I was inspired to create my own little list of black musicians/singers. To keep the list from growing exponentially, I've stuck to six of those living today...

Gasp! And Alicia Keys isn't on it! (I like her, btw, she just didn't make my top 6)

Here goes!

6. Mary Jane Blige. Granted, she's probably not best friends with PETA, but she's sold over 40million albums. And she's from the boogie-down.

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tWkqDwfpN0o&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tWkqDwfpN0o&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

5. Tracy Chapman. Maybe cuz "Give Me One Reason" was one of the first songs I learned on the guitar, but TC has a way of hitting home with nearly any music fan.

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kjRo_CHSdt0&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kjRo_CHSdt0&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

4. Corinne Bailey Rae. England represent! She writes, sings and plays. And when asked about her stint in the indie band Helen, she said "It was the first time I'd seen women with guitars. They were kinda sexy – but feminist. I wanted to be like that, at the front of something". Uhm. Yeah. That single-handedly bumped you to spot No. 4, Corinne...

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/aMIaApFCLu8&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/aMIaApFCLu8&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

3. Tina Turner. Ike, shmike. She could be my private dancer any day. Tennessee-born and oh so proud, how can I NOT put Tina on my list!? She embodies soul, grit, and passion. I mean, let's just put Mad Max on the back burner for a second and watch this. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/qtDQlekag24&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/qtDQlekag24&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

2. Cassandra Wilson. She's strong, she's talented, and her voice is like buttah. Here's a clip of her doing a cover of "Fragile". <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/7cvl4YymMU8&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/7cvl4YymMU8&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

1. Lauryn Hill. Talk about poetic. I can play her albums from start to finish, won't skip a song, won't miss a beat. Lauryn started by singing at weddings with her mom, brother and sister (how cute is that!?), and went on to sell out stadiums. Unforutnately she became disillusioned with the industry, and said in an interview, "They didn’t understand how female and strong work together. Or young and wise. Or Black and divine." . This woman is STUNNING. GORGEOUS. Here she sings "Turn the Lights Down Low" <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/YwawI9ffBbc&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YwawI9ffBbc&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

100% The Noisettes.

Beautiful Music. Beautiful frontwoman (Shingai Shoniwa).

The Noisettes

I just discovered Suffrajett (who is currently touring w/ LA band the Dollyrots) and am loving the sound:

Suffrajett

and then there's MilitiA...not only is she a woman in metal, but she's a biracial woman in a genre that's usually dominated by White Males (I <3 Heavy Metal Women. There's an aggression and fire that you just don't find in any other genre.)

militiA

Ok. Now my favorite musician. Her voice is gorgeous and her lyrics biting. Also a heavy metal goddes Skin was a first in many ways: first--she was a black woman in metal. Second--she was bisexual. and she felt these differences, as noted in the song "It Takes Blood and Guts to Be This Cool, But I'm Still Just a Cliche."

Their music wasn't your average angry at life metal-type song. Politics, Racism, Religion, Sex, no subject was left untouched. Howard Stern embraced them because of their song "Selling Jesus"--a good song but not nearly as good as "Intellectualize my Blackness" and other songs. Long story short...Skunk Anansie rocked. hardcore. Too bad the band broke up, but Skin is still around.. woot!! (now if only the bass player continued to make some waves. he was *good*)

Skin

Random note: even with all this said: should we really relegate these women to lists? it's like the idea-how long does it take for a female athlete to just become an athlete? when does a female musician just become a musician? A black woman musician? Lists are fun, but I think it's important to keep in mind putting categorizing our favorite artists according to race/ethnicity/gender/etc isn't the best way to go about things...Celebrate these women today, tomorrow, the day after, every day!!

very well said!

stephanie. i agree. i was in a grocery store the other day with a friend. after we checked out...my friend said, "that guy who checked us through is so nice." then added, "he's gay." he meant nothing by it...just making a observation, but...you know. i replied back, "would you have made the comment, "he's a nice guy...he's hispanic."? it'll be a beautiful day when we are all just recognized as individuals...known for our own unique qualities rather than with a label, obvious or not.

that said, regarding this thread...check out this video: sharon jones and the dap-kings, song title:100 days, 100 nights. if it doesn't put you in a good mood, nothing will!

Definitely agree that

Definitely agree that Lauryn Hill is great, brilliant. I still listen to "..Miseducation.." today.

I gotta mention a few more:
Aretha Franklin

Chaka Khan (totally love "Angel")

Stephanie Mills

Jennifer Holliday

Whitney Houston (back in the day. but I hope she make a comeback. i've been keeping my fingers crossed. they're starting to cramp)

Jill Scott(loved her first cd)

Ledisi (love her song 'Alright' and her version of E,W,&F's 'Devotion)

Vivian Green (great, but doesn't get promoted enough)

and Hope (heard her song "The Rain Don't Last" on her myspace (.com/hearhope) and absolutely loved it.)

My respect goes to the New

My respect goes to the New Bloods.

2 (out of 3) of the girls in the band are Black. And all of them are lesbian!

And they make the most beautiful post punk I've ever heard.

I admire all of the girls for making such inspiring music.

New Bloods

I also think Libby Cotten is pretty rad too with her wacky guitar skills.
