Racism/Prejudice within the Lesbian community in parts of EnglandI'm an out and proud black British Lesbian. In the area I live I would say that 85% of lesbians are white. Many of my lesbian friends whom are all white have said to me they couldnt ever have a relationship with a black girl, asian girl or a oriental girl bascially anyone of colour.I asked them why they feel this way and they just screw up their face and say 'egrh no' . It angers me so much that in this day and age and with the multicultrul society we live in that people can be so one minded. When I have been out to lesbian clubs in my area, I get the feeling that when I come across white girls they would like to persue their feeling at that moment in time but they then think twice because of maybe what there friends will say or even if they should be thinking about it. Now I have just come back from working and living in America-California for 9 months. Because I'm 19 I couldnt go to lesbian clubs and bars. But I did manage to meet gay and lesbian people on my travells. I went to the castro street fair in San francisco, where there was a multitude of different races and religions. I saw many inter-racial couples male and female. The vibe was just so good girls didnt look at me and think 'a black girl o god' girls of all different races where checking me out! just because simply I was another lesbian who was looking hott that particuar day..joke! But seriously I think America has it sorted with the LGBT inter-racial community.Because there are so many different races in America people dont think twice if they see a lesbian of another race they just persue it if they are attracted to them.
So ladies.. what do you think about racism and predjudice in your LGBT community? Have you been a victim of racism of prejudice? Tell me what you think, I would love to know. SWJ Submitted by whitney (3 posts) on January 21, 2008 - 8:25am. |

Racism/Prejudice within the Lesbian community in parts of Englan
Don't let the scene at the pride parades or G&L events fools you. Racial prejudice within the Lesbain and Gay community is alive. Typically, at these type of events you will see a broad range of couple of different races. But I would imagine most experience some type of prejudice outside of these events.
I am black and my partner is white. We live in Chicago. We have been together five years and even at the Pride Parade people stare holes through us. Chicago is unique in that it has diverse pockets through-out the city...But the city still has racial tenison that it's trying to over come. Most of parties, clubs here cater to white gays and blacks have found their own way. But I disgress..Yes, i have experienced prejudice from being refused a drink at bar, to physically having someone stand toe to toe with me in attempt to make me leave.
Good think my girl don't take no mess! We learned to pick our battles and only frequent places where skin color isn't an issue.
what!?
"If you should see her...tell her I miss her still." -- Galinda. 'Wicked'
wtf
i was just about to write almost exactly what gelphie said, i don't understand the reaction your friends have, and these people are supposed to be your friends right? so you would assume they're not racist, but comments like that are racist.
i would never ever not enter into a relationship with a person because of their skin colour, whether they're black, asian whatever, i know a lot of people who wouldnt date an asian person, like indian or pakistani, whereas i would, but i dont know anyone who wouldn't date a black person.
where in england do you live?
i'm really sorry that this is the reactions and experience you've had but just know that not all people think like that =)
thank you
Thanks for your kind words and understanding. I live in Wiltshire near bath, in the country.lol
:)
I think that is awful! I
I didn't expect that point-of-view from England...
The only type of racism I've experienced wasn't triggered by sexual orientation. It's because I'm of middle-eastern descent. I'm indian, yet many people assume that if you look brown and cover ur head, that automatically makes you a terrorist. It was worse right after 9/11. Thanks to the whole "WAR ON TERROR" hallabalooo that our government has circulated, I occasionally get the "you're a terrorist" accusation.
I’m not surprised
It doesn't completely surprise me!
There is still so much racism about in general. I hear it from people around me all the time and I dont think being gay gets you a free pass out of ignorance. If you look in the reverse as well the Black community aren't anymore accepting of LBGT people than the White community, when technically they should be because of everything they've had to face!
I'm thinking it also might be an area thing though cause when I go out in London you see a lot more interracial relationships and no one gives them a second glance but then maybe because i'm not in one I don't see the prejudice. If I do look then it cause i'm checking you out :-) Sorry!
Yes I do have friends who wouldn't go out with women of colour but its because they're not attracted to them and yes maybe thats a deep seated form of racism but I myself like some women of colour and not others so I dont think you can help who you are and aren't attracted to! Not being with someone because you're scared of what your friends will think and that "ergh no" comment is pretty disguting behaviour and makes me ashamed of my race! We're not all like that though and I hope you get to meet more of us. Hopefully one day all those ignorant people will get a clue!
This is just sad
Shouldn't those people know better since they're facing discriminations themselves? Sometimes it's so depressing to know there are still so many ignorant people exist. I don't have to face alot of racial discrimination since I live at an area with many minorities, but of course once a while I'll run into some ignoarant racist...even in California. Sometimes people will assume you don't speak any English or can't read just because you are asian.
One time when I went shopping and got to the checkstand, I only saw one checkstand that was opened. That line only allows cash payment, but I went there anyway since that's the only line that was opened. I saw a Caucasian lady paid by credit card anyway and the clerk didn't say anything about it. But when it was my turn, she started saying things to the old Caucasian woman behind me like "you know, people should learn to read english here.", and that woman replied by "yeah, and learn to speak as well". I didn't know why I didn't say anything back then. I just give them a dirty look and grab the receipt and left. I was so mad for not saying "This is the only line that is open, stupid bit*h".
Anyhow, I'm sorry for the discriminations you're facing. I've always thought England is less discriminating until now...
I'm not surprised either........
I think it's very sad as well that Lesbians can treat other lesbians like that, especially saying it to straight to your face. My ex-gf was black, as well as part Chinese and part Indian and I was very proud to be with her. We both lived in England and in Scotland as a couple and she didn't face any discrimination as a black lesbian, but i do know there are areas in the UK where racism does rear it's ugly head and i am not surprised it would also be in the gay scene as well.
Sorry that happened to you, be proud of who you are and rise above them. It goes to show you that not only do we have to fight against discrimination in society, but we also have to fight against discrimination within our own community. Very sad indeed.
Good luck sister !
SoleSister
wow-thank you ladies!
Ladies ladies ladies,
Thank you all ever so much for for you kind word and oppinions. Its nice to hear other people's views on this situation.
:)
in Madrid is the same!!
Hi girls. I am black woman living in Madrid, Spain and I completely understand what you say. The spanish society is racism and I ear a lot of comments of some lesbians that said that couldnt ever have a relationship with a black girl!! Is very sad, but I think that is a society problem and most are very ignorant. First of all, all gay peope are humans and have the same prejuices like hetero people, is amaizing, but it is real life! I think that we just have to be open to everyone no matther what they are or skin color!
Kisses to all
that's so disappointing.
i really thought it was different everywhere else. quite honestly...that breaks my heart.
I got a dick like a mule...with a big dick.
