Suggestions needed

Hello all,

I've recently hit a dry spot when it comes to music. I usually discover *one* artist each year that I will obsess over, but this year it seems to have been quite a dry year, and nothing is really hitting me as good. So what do I do in times of crisis? Turn it over to you guys.

What I'm looking for is recommendations of music, artists which you feel aren't being listened to enough. For a quick idea of music which I like:

Singer/songwriters, musicals, Jazz, old style motown, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Mclachlan, Ani, and ultimate cheese.

I run a voluntary radio station in a hospital, and lets just say that the regular patients are starting to get a little sick of the same soundtrack.

Any help would be fantastic.

if you like ella and old style motown...

you have GOT to check out Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Watch this video on youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ouI5KcyHfE

to see the song by them, "100 days, 100 nights"

apparently the director of the video bought old-time tv video cameras to film it. it is so so great. it feels like an old Ed Sullivan segment. Sharon Jones is amazing—what attitude and what a voice...

Absolutely

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings is a must. Their album, 100 Days, 100 Nights, is incredible and if you get the opportunity to see them live, you must do it. If you've heard the Amy Winehouse album, Back in Black, then you know a little about the Dap Kings, as they did some of the instrumentation on that album...but it's with Sharon Jones that they really shine. Check out their myspace page and see what you think.

I'd also recommend Iron and Wine's latest album The Shepard's Dog and the soundtrack to the movie Once for more of the singer/songwriter vibe. They were two of my favorite records of 2007.

One of my favorite things to do to discover new artists these days is to spend a few minutes (which, inevitably, turn into hours) perusing artists on Myspace. Using the search function, you can specify a genre or influence and then browse artists' pages (and the music featured therein). That's actually how I found a great singer/songwriter I'm listening to now: William Fitzsimmons.

Hope this helps.

Love Sharon Jones

I love Sharon Jones and really like 100 days, 100 nights. It's the motown sound with a different horn section. I think the Dap Kings played on Amy Whinehouse CD. I'm not a fan of AW but really like the instrumental arrangement in Rehab. I like funk and motown.

Is the music primarily for

Is the music primarily for you?  Or for the radio station?  If it's the latter, what's the patient profile?

finding new music

another way that i have found new music is the online "radio" site called pandora (pandora.com). you build your own radio station based on seeding in artists and/or songs that you like and the program finds similar (usually new or obscure artists) that are based on the same musical qualities (like instrumentation or vocalizations), rather than genre. i have found so many new artist (new to me) through pandora. and it's free.

there's a lot

of undiscovered artists out there. any number of internet websites could help you out. but here's a few i thought of...don't know if it's your style but lily allen, eric hutchinson, james morrison, colbie caillat, and rissi palmer. they're all the newer artists i can think of that might suit your needs.

I think you'll enjoy these.

Amy MacDonald. She is a Scottish singer. One of my favs is the song Poison Prince.

Stevie Ann. Dutch singer. Get Away.

Also,
Koop - Come to me

Hooverphonic - Billie. A live acoustic version, cause I love it so much and everytime I hear it I fall a little more in love with singer Geike Arnaert

I think you might like Jill

I think you might like Jill Tracy. She dresses like a decadent flapper, plays the piano, and sings slightly wicked songs. She has a "dark cabaret" sound and is utterly fabulous.

Pinback-their older music is

Pinback-their older music is good, I enjoy Rilo Kiley's the execution of all things, and Fiona Apple's work is always smooth and enjoyable. The Shins newest cd is fun and if you're into something that tends to be poetic and worded nicely death cab for cutie has some great cd's. Personally transatlanticism and plans are my favorite.
