Accents?

No idea where to post this so apologies!

Just a quick question, I find myself hearing that people think certain accents are sexy, like the Irish one (can't blame you there! j/k), Scottish one or Aussie one, personally I don't get it. What's so sexy about an accent?

I just checked where you hail from.  I am Scottish and I have been mistaken (in London) for being Irish! I know - weird.  Anyway, I love an Irish accent.  How can you not GET IT.

Embarrassed to say i'm

Embarrassed to say i'm English and have mixed up Scottish and Irish accents lol.Anyway I love the Welsh accent.
Ally_aka_Renee's picture

Lol. Ah now how can you do

Lol. Ah now how can you do that? I think theres a huge difference between the two. But then again a Donegal and the Northern Irish accent is similar to the Scottish one. Welsh accent is cool, again I think its funny. I think most accents are funny rather than sexy.

I absolutely LOVE accents! The accents that turn me on are Australian (Peta Wilson), French (Celine Dion), Puerto Rican (Roselyn Sanchez), and British (Catherine Zeta-Jones). =D

um...

cathrine zeta-jones is welsh i believe.

Wales is in Britain.

But there isn't such thing as a single "British" accent

There are scores and scores. Actually, I don't know what you'd call Catherine Z-J's accent. It's not Welsh.
Shorty AZK's picture

CZJ used to have a Welsh

CZJ used to have a Welsh accent I believe but now she tends to speak with a kind of fake posh-ish English accent....don't know what that's about!!

I like accents, I really like the Irish one!!!
starlettels's picture

My faves

I really like British, like proper British (think Helen Mirren, Janet McTeer, and Nigella Lawson). I also find an Australian accent pretty sexy. The French accent is sexy as well.

ACCENTS

Accents are absolutely wonderful! I mostly don't care where the accent comes from its just sexy to me to hear someone say things differently than you do. I just went to the pharmacy, and the technician (who was HOT) has an accent, its also a good conversation starter! I don't know, I like New York accents too, maybe I'm weird.

tabula_rasa33's picture

they. rock.

definitely not wierd!!!

i'm the same way. haha. accents in GENERAL are reeeeallly freakin hot. i'm pretty proud of myself.. i can now distinguish aussie and new zealand accents :) [[LUCY LAWLESS=<3]]

I hate to be picky...

but Catherine Zeta Jones is actually Welsh :P

I can fully understand the Irish accent though, my cousin has been living in Ireland for 5 years and each time she comes home she has a little more of the Irish 'R" in her speech lol.

Ditto...

on that proper British accent.  Makes me melt.  I don't know about the French accent though.  I'm still iffy on that.  It depends on how well-spoken the person is.  Now, the French language can reduce me to mush in seconds.....whether I understand it or not.

How can I not get it,

How can I not get it, kcaries? Well simple, I'm Irish so I've heard all the accents here. We dont have just one! So whichever one you like I hope its a Dub one, coz we just rock! j/k. But some of them are so terrible that it would put you have accents for life, I'm telling ya! Just try to talk to someone from Waterford. I've family there and cant understand them half the time!

Oh, em Wales is a part of Britain so you can say that Zeta-Jones is British, put its probably better to say Welsh.

I find New Yorker accents funny! I dont mean to offend anyone but I just do.

As for the British accent I can kind of relate. Liz Hurleys accent is great. Thats the kind of British accent I like...but still I dont find them sexy.

Apologies

if my original post seemed antagonistic.  It wasn't intended.  The tone in your head doesn't always translate to the written word. And you are quite correct, it was wrong of me to generalise and there are many accents from any country.  I guess what I find most attractive are those that are not overly heavy on localised dialect - that's not to say that I think everyone should sound the same.  I am from Glasgow and I know that I don't have what you would call a "typical" glaswegian accent.  As far as Dublin goes I've never been but have heard from friends that it does indeed rock.

 kc

Ally_aka_Renee's picture

No need, it didnt seem that

No need, it didnt seem that way at all. And dont worry about generalising, everyone does it. People who aren't actually from a country dont realise the various accents within the one place, I mean I wouldnt be able to tell a Glaswegian from an Edinburgh accent! Although I do know a Glaswegian and her accent is cool! Thankfully shes easy to understand! Meh, Dublin's okay. I get sick of places easily, but I am proud to be from here.

Anyway I drifted off topic there. Still dont get the sexieness of an accent, but everyones different! Whatever floats your boats

pannenhilfe's picture

Hey, and what about ...

german accents? Aren't they sexy enough?! hahahaha just kidding, I know we german-speaking folks sound terrible ...
hollowrain's picture

off topic for a moment...

lesbian pirates rock! Great comic...awesome avatar :D

On topic again, my german teacher in high school was an immigrant from Germany, her accent was incredible!

YOU!

got it RIGHT sistah! hehe

and thanks for the praises for my ava!

[and off the topic again: you learned German? Wow,very brave! I would never ever learn German (it's grammar is way to complicated if you have to learn it)]

sunflower's picture

depends on which german

depends on which german accent you're talking about. i don't understand a word of bavarian. i'm not sure what it's like when they speak english though....

[btw, german really isn't that difficult to learn, you should definitely give it a try]

pannenhilfe's picture

You're right ...

The accent heavily depends on which region you come from and what sort of German (dialects) you speak ...

[lol, I'm happy that you (I just assume that now) learned German quick and without difficulty, but I'm Austrian, and so very happy not to have to learn it :]

see-emm-siggy's picture

accents

The Viennese speak German in a very singsongy way (in my opinion). Is there only one Austrian dialect or do they vary according to different regions in Austria? I've only been to Vienna so i couldn't compare.

Doesn't anyone else dig the French accent? I just love listening to French people speaking English. But not when they speak German. :P

pannenhilfe's picture

yessss sir!

Oui , they do.

There are sooo many different dialects out here, it's crazy!

It even differs from village to village but generally you can say every "state" (omg, that's so funny to refer to this little bundesländer states ... because Austria is probably way smaler than one of the smalest states in America) has it's own "way of speaking" (not a dialect, but similarities between local dialects, which occurs in every one of them)

So generally you can say:

in the East (and the Middle), we speak a very "soft" German, French r's and no hard p & t 's (the Viennese dialect is a mix of proper German, mixed with this sort of speaking) also typical is the "singsongy" language, as you (rightly) mentioned

the farer you go West (& South), the harder it gets, very hard k, p and t's and rolling tongue - r 's

this goes so far, that it's impossible for me (coming from the farest East) to understand someone coming from Voralberg (which borders on Swiss)

Ha, I loooooooove frenchy German! Just thinking of Stereo Total etc.

How People Talk

I love British accents, french, and American southern. I'm not wild about midwestern or accents from the deep south. In addition to accents there's the attitude of speech. For example, girls that use "whatever" in that whatever sort of way, fast and slow speech, slang, tight, earthy.

I reckon I'm going off topic some, more of post on speech than accents. I'm just so fascinated with how people talk. The tone of their voice, the pauses, the accent, the choice of words.

Stoned Soul's picture

I agree

Interesting points Chase. I like a southern accent myself.
tlwalsh's picture

I moved to the deep south

I moved to the deep south when i started high school and i absolutely hated the accent. Now i can tolerate it and that's probably because i've picked up a bit of a light accent myself. I make people laugh because i have the vernacular of someone from Seattle, but i sound like someone from Georgia or the Carolinas. I've been told it sounds cute, but it bugs me because i'm really not from the south.

I also have a similar thing with Spanish. I lived in a farming region in Spain when i was a little kid, so when native Spanish speakers hear me, they say i speak the equivalent of "country" Spanish. It is to Spanish what a southern accent is to American English.

Anyway, i prefer Aussie accents. I'm also somewhat fond of Scottish accents. There's something about the pronounciation of the vowels that just makes me smile.

I always compare slang with people from other regions/countries, it can make for some of the funniest coversations ever, because nobody has any idea what the other is saying!
furuyuki_shane's picture

errr...

well....i'm asian but english has always been my first language, so i pick up accents super quick. like, i'm studying in england at the moment and i've already got the southern slang. which is not posh but not northern either =\ and when i first went, people said 'did you get american trained or something?' which was insulting but oh well.

and then this christmas i was in america, texas to be precise, and i met up with my cousins friends and everyone was like 'omg, she's british. say something. it sounds sexy' well i guess i was flattered? but i picked up the american accent on the first day =\ so i guess i'll have to switch.

i have a thing where my accent switches where i am, or it depends on the people im talking to. so if i was in england talking to my mother, i would be speaking very rubbish english. because that's how malaysians speak english : broken =)

i wonder why people love accents =\ maybe because it defines the person? cuz they re more intriguing because they come from somehwere else? hell, i don't know. but i do know i love the british accent. it's popular with girls =)

I think it's known as Manglish? Or so my Malaysian friends tell me. I'm currently in Singapore on exchange, and at first, I didn't understand all the 'lah's... among other things. It was rather bewildering. Now I'm pretty okay with it :)

As for myself, I was born in Liverpool, but I've lived in the U.S. of A. for a long time, so my accent is a rather confusing one. People usually don't really know where to place me.

But its all good. :D

I speak spanish/english without an accent, too but I still love salma! the fact that it's such a thick accent is the best part, haha. :-) whatever...maybe I just really like salma, which makes her accent 'tolerable' haha.

i do have to agree with you about the english accent, though! ;-]

British/East Coast accents are sexy!

Accents are sexy...especially a hot female is trying to find english words to explain what the heck she's trying to say...you'll end up helping her is soooooooo cute. I had a British Friend in college who had a major crush on me. I would totally tease her about her accent especially when she swore and say S&*&. It's sooo cute.  I just think British accents are adorable. I  also love the U.S.East Coast accents. Oh my Goddess it is so dreamy!

I live in the south...southern accents ugggh not so sexy. I speak and think fast. I have to slow my words down so peeps can understand. Southerns!

minerva's picture

British...

I honestly think British accents are so sexy. Like, for instance, Lena Heady and Rachel Shelley’s accents.

Don’t really know why but I find them absolutely adorable and irresistible.

I also like other accents but the British catches me almost all the time.

Gotta love accents

I find most accents endlessly fascinating. I love Scottish, Italian, and some British accents. But for me, I think the appeal really comes from whose mouth the accent is flowing from.
laura1888's picture

irish accents...

...i love most irish accents in general i dont know why exactly, northern irish and southern.i know quite a few ppl from the north and love their accents, sometimes southern irish ppl are a bit harder to understand but dublin accents are cool too,i think its funny that alot of ppl cant tell the difference between different accents in the uk,theres loads of accents,i was at a new yrs party and there was an irish guy and an english guy from newcastle, they were both talkin 2 me at different times throughout the night and the more we all had to drink the harder it became to understand each other, it was like they were speakin a different language but its funny to think we were all speaking english.so in general i think accents are cool.i have a thick scottish accent when i visited australia  i dont think alot of them understood me and i had to slow down and enunciate all my words properly.

Lol, yeah accents in the

Lol, yeah accents in the south of Ireland can sometimes be terrible to understand. I mean I'm Irish and cant understand my cousins. But then again they are country folk and I'm a Dub, I've the better accent lol j/k.

I don't get the hype

Before I start i'll give a little background my father is a Scottish immigrant and my mother is a Korean immigrant and I grew up in the south. I grew up around accents, southern accents, Korean accents, Scottish accents, then went to Japan for study abroad.

So I don't get what the big hype is about accents really, i like voices quality and speech pattern more. I personally have a little bit of a southern drawl in how I pronounce my words but no real accent.  I wish I knew what all the hype was about...

Stoned Soul's picture

I know what you mean

I like voice quality and speech patterns as well. I also like a bit of a southern drawl:-)
