(Hot) German TV presenter comes outFormer anchorwoman of the most popular German evening news and now well-respected host of the highest-rated political talk show in Germany, Anne Will, FINALLY came out at an official event yesterday. For years pretty much everyone in the media world and almost every gay woman in Germany knew that she is involved with Professor Miriam Meckel, once the youngest university professor in Germany and now a very well-known media expert. Now it is finally official - bringing me to squeal with delight this morning upon reading the good news. Even in a country as open as Germany (with gay mayors in both of the biggest cities, a gay Liberal party leader and quite a few openly gay comedians at least), the coming-out of the most popular political TV journalist is big news, and good news for lesbian visibility. Oh, and also, and the main reason why I am sharing this with you: Both women are insanely hot. ;) I am currently watching her talk show, and she seems very at ease and relaxed, almost relieved. Wow
Agreed, very hot women
"Finally" and "hot" are definitively the right words here!
I think the coming out of Anne Will is really great, even if it is very likely that they came out just to avert an outing by the yellow press... Although this was an open secret in the lesbian community, it could be a bit surprising for the rest of Germany...
I hope German people are as openminded as we wish them to be so that it won´t influence her success on tv! But I agree with you, she seemed very relaxed on her show tonight! ;)
will; a no-nonsense and strong woman. love her.
Fantastic. the looks and the minds there! ;-).
actio supra reactio // in vino veritas
Anne Will - finally!
Yeah, I read it this morning and it really made my day! It is soo cool that she finally confirmed what many people already knew (though not my hetero friends..). I also liked the randomness of her answer ("Yes we are a couple. But we would like to keep our private life private."). And then posing and smiling right under the slogan of the event at the Jewish museum: "tolerance and understanding". :-)
I too thought she was very relaxed on her show today. I have seen her as a guest in other talk shows recently (one together with Berlin's gay mayor Wowereit) where she seemed always extremely stressed and tense. And the press of the last months was full of allusions to her private life... so no wonder. I'm glad for her that she finally had the courage!
wow
Big deal for her, her partner, the media
I like Anne Will, but I don´t watch her anymore (S Christiansen really made me go off political shows because they were debates, not discussions - tell me, AW´s show is different and I might look into it).
I have read about the rumour ("the smile at the end of the Tagesthemen is for her female partner") once a couple of years ago and being straight myself, all I can say is "Good for her, but honestly, no big deal for me."
I don´t mean that negatively, perhaps I am just sufficiently tolerant and understanding already that it makes no difference to me which sexual orientation someone has.
(When a woman introduces her new boyfriend or a man introduces his new girlfriend, people seem to react like this: "deep love, partnership, marriage, children, life together, how wonderful, congratulations".
When a woman introduces her new girlfriend or a man introduces his new boyfriend, people seem to think "sex perverts".
I wonder who the real perverts are in this scenario.)
Perfect...
Perfect, you seem to be as open-minded as I like everyone to be! :)
About the new show...here are the things that are different: new studio and decoration, new concept with concerned people as guests on an extra sofa and (most important) the new host Anne Will who is a better interviewer and journalist in my opinion. But on the whole, I sadly have to say that it is not that different because the politicians simply don´t answer the questions (even if they are asked several times) but just try to throw out their political message...or argue and behave like Kindergarten kids instead of having a real discussion with the will to solve problems like yesterday when the opponents of the railway strike were invited. It was nearly unbearable, I can tell you!
In my opinion it is just worth to watch it when you want to have a look at her...and if you can overhear some stupid phrases of her guests like I try to do... ;)
I'm extremely thrilled that
I'm extremely thrilled that they have finally come out. This is great news for the German-speaking lesbian and bisexual community!
I'm also glad to know that they are still together as there has been rumour that they split up some time ago.

Totally agree on what
Totally agree on what you're supposing. Since she has taken over the highest-rated political talk show in September a lot of articles were full of speculations about her private life. Either she averted an outing by the yellow press - as you said, Gretchen - or she was fed up with all the speculations. It's a pity that she probably was forced to come out.
But I'm glad she finally did it, cause it's an important signal. It's true that we have gay mayors in Berlin and Hamburg, but we don't have any openly lesbian politician (one education secretary in the federal state Hesse, but I guess only a few interested people know her). So it's very good news that a considerable person in the circle of politics - even though she is a journalist, but a very important one - came out.
In the lesbian community nearly everybody knew. But lots of people will be surprised, I'm sure.
In my opinion her show is a lot better than "Sabine Christiansen". If you wanna have a look on Anne Will and the show, here is the link to yesterday's show:

She seemed totally relieved. She always smiles a lot during her shows, but this time she almost made a cheerful impression. Very nice to see and worth watching, even if you don't speak German.
Just posted an AfterEllen article on it
Germany's Top TV Journalist Comes Out
German speakers, feel free to correct me if I made an any errors, since I had to piece together the research from a lot of different sources, many of which were in German, so I may have missed something (or mistranslated it).
Oh, and thanks for the info above, it helped point me in the right direction!
Sarah, do you speak
No German, sadly, just some French
But I was able to piece the story together through bad (but good enough) online translations of German newspaper stories about the coming-out, plus what you all had written above, a few emails I received from German readers, and the English Wikipedia entries for Anne and Miriam. Glad to hear I didn't make any major errors! Using lots of photos helps cut down on the potential for that. :)
Thanks for the feedback, and the info about the sex therapist interview. Very funny. It's always two steps forward, one step back like that, isn't it?
I'm going to bed now, since I stayed up all night to write this (it's 5:30am my time) and I have to go to work later this morning. If anyone catches any errors in the piece, leave 'em here or PM me and I'll fix it when I wake up in six hours.
Unbelievable!
For one moment I was tempted to buy the BILD the first time because of the article about Anne Will...but your post reminded me of its lowbrow "journalism"... well, on the one hand you can only laugh about what the therapist said (sex is unimportant, right, won his exam in the lottery?!), but on the other hand it´s very sad because sooooo many people will read it - I think it´s the best sold "newspaper" in Germany..?! I can only hope that most of them don´t believe it just because a so called expert said it...
But I´m with you, someday we will approach the ending of this long way...a few steps more since yesterday! :)
@Sarah: Thank you for the article!
Thanks for staying up all
Thanks for staying up all night for the pleasure of the surprisingly many German readers here, then... ;-)

not lesbian but trans
More important, IMO, than Will's public acknowledgement of her identity which everyone knew anyway, is German pole-vaulter Yvonne Buschbaum's coming out as trans today on her homepage. http://www.pole-it-buschbaum.de/.
That may bring some much needed publicity/support for trans people's rights.
Yes, great that you
Interesting link
For anyone able to read German I have an interesting link: http://www.bildblog.de/2650/das-recht-am-fremden-bild
Miriam Meckel blogged about being chased by paparazzi and the inexplicable fascination these people or people in general have with two women (a TV presenter and her girlfriend, she writes) having simple dinner in a restaurant. She describes vividly the scary feeling of being haunted by these people and even tried to chase them herself in return, the short video of which can be seen at the end of the well-written article.
Bildblog, by the way, is a blog entirely devoted to ridiculing the biggest German tabloid Bild, one the best German blogs available.
Translation
The article was very good. Miriam Meckel is quite a character. You wonder if the paparazzi will be more aggressive now that she has brilliantly criticized them.

Anne Will on YouTube
I love the clip on You Tube where, presumably, Anne Will is making the announcement.
She looks great, sounds great. Problem is, I can't undertstand a word! I'd love to know exactly what she said. Any translators here?
