Janet McTeer: Is she a sista?I've recently been doing a little cyber-stalking of Janet McTeer and was wondering if anyone knows if she is a lesbian? I've found some circumstantial evidence that points in that direction but nothing definite. This is what I've come up with:
I love her even if she isn't a lesbian, but I can't help but hope she's one of us! Submitted by gypsywee (882 posts) on November 15, 2007 - 2:22pm. |

my gaydar is beeping too!
I won't be surprised if she is lesbian. After all she is not married and is wearing a ring, that is also belong to the Jodie Foster school of....fashion?!! ;)
and yes, she does actually very much look like a lesbian, a funny one too, and that interview could not point toward her being gay any more! she was giving way too many gay hints for a straight woman.
:O
Alas...
I too had high hopes that gorgeous Janet was one of us but my hopelessly smitten little heart was subdued with pain and sorrow when I read the following in Carole Zucker's book "In the Company of Actors" (Janet talks about the problems she encountered when creating the role of Vita Sackville-West):
"So, you have little bits here, little bits there, and eventually you try and find a piece in the middle that you can connect with ... And suddenly you have this three-dimensional picture. ... Vita had a whole different way of holding herself, of walking, her sexuality was different from mine, all those things are very important."
:-(((
"Starting tomorrow, I'm going to be unspeakably fatal."
I come bearing hope!
What Janet was actually saying, wasn't necessarily that she isn't a sista lol, but that the character she was portraying had a different attitude to sex and a different way of communicating it, actors talk like that all the time.
THERE'S STILL HOPE!!!!
and for your viewing pleasure....

Thank you, oh, bearer of hope!
I love your way of thinking!
Were it not for hope the heart would break ;-)

just wanted to share this McTeer photo
... the one where she's wearing the jeans and boots.
Just in support of point No. 6 above. :)
Janet as Petruchio
Also in support of several of my points is this picture of Janet playing Petruchio in the all-female production of Taming of the Shrew.
Here is an excerpt about Janet from Maureen Lipman's review of the play in the New Statesman "From her first entrance, peeing up against a pillar, she was funny, macho and dead sexy..."
I can't believe I missed this!
Flippin' RAD!
I would give *anything* to play Petruchio, myself .... I can only imagine that Janet McTeer is rockin' the socks of that play!!!! I LOVE IT! Great photo, btw, Gypsy! :)
I would *love* to see Janet
I would *love* to see Janet McTeer play Petruchio. I was so pleased when I found out she was doing Taming of the Shrew. I think I'd find Petruchio much more palatable with McTeer in the part.
(I wish she were queer, but hey, that's what dreams are for, dammit).
Ever since I was a kid
I've had a crush on janet mcteer. She must have pinged for me to pick up on something when I was so young. sometimes I think it's only due to the fact she does seem to pick alot of lesbian roles but there's something more there that only sistas pick up on. I hope beyond hope she is - but think she'd be the type to be so private she'll never come out.
she's married...
Unfortunately I found out today that she's married to the actor robert portal. I read that she was married on the other website (datalounge) and then I had a look on the old t'internet and found it was him. They acted together in the amazing mrs pritchard.

*weeping inconsolably*
That's it, the terrorists have won...
I can't believe it... I know I said I'd lover her no matter what (and I do), but my heart is broken.
*pats GW on back*
It's OK ... it'll be OK ... maybe in her next life, eh?
And what’s he then that says I play the villain,
When this advice is free I give, and honest
Thanks PG...

Not Convinced she's married
Janet McTeer is totally hot. I'm not convinced she's married (should I be?)
She does look pretty "lovey dovey"...
with that robert portal dude (see trequk's link above). *gags* Of course, if one of you UK women would go to your department of public records (or whatever you call it over there) and scan a copy of their marriage license we could put this whole traumatic thread to bed! lol

I refuse to believe...
that she's married! I have been searching and searching forever to find any info on her and can't come up with anything. The ONLY hit I got led me here:-) Even if you search for Janet + Robert together you only get a list of sites about The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard and some plays they've done together. Surely the Brits would have made some announcement somewhere had they actually gotten married...right?
I just can't believe that she's strictly straight. I can't. I won't.
PaintedLady....do I know you from HMAS? (I'm eden7701 over there.)
DITTO
I agree with you gypsywee and MirrenFan, if she was married there would be some mention of it. In regards to the pic of robert portal and janet, maybe they are close friends or maybe they WERE dating but that's a long cry from marriage. I hold the belief that she is single.
What is HMAS, sounds kind of scary:)
Janet McTeer update
The most compelling "evidence" that she is married, comes from a post that trequk mentioned on DataLounge. A poster claims to have met Janet and "her husband" when she was in NYC doing A Doll's House. However! there are several sources (Charlie Rose, Wikipedia, imdb) that are from the same period as her A Doll's House run *or much later* that claim she is not married or do not mention a spouse (and they always mention a spouse if there is a spouse).
After hours of research *wiping sweat from brow*, I have found no empirical proof. So, unless I see something incontrovertible that proves she's married, I'm going to continue to believe that she's one of us! Ever the optimist!
Christmas? Christmas means dinner, dinner means death! Death means carnage; Christmas means carnage!
-Ferdinand the duck
I'm with you!
Painted Lady- Don't be scared...HMAS is the Helen Mirren Appreciation Society website. OK, go ahead. Be scared. There's a user over their with that name and I thought you were her. There are a few of us over there that are just as enamoured of Janet as we are of Helen.
Gypsywee-I cannot tell you how many hours (it probably translates into days at this point) I have spent on this quest for information. I spent several over at DataLounge last night looking for the thread with that info and could not find any. During this quest, I have read countless interviews from from her A Dolls House period and Tumbleweeds period where she has stated that she was, indeed, single. And she does state in her Charlie Rose interview that she did during her A Doll's House run that she was not married and and had no children...just nephews. Then there was a period from when she filmed The King is Alive through the shooting of Songcather on through the writing and filimg of The Intended where she was with the director, Kristian Levring, but they were not married. Then more interviews where she was single but referring to a "fella" again....at the same time saying that she would want Jeanine Garafolo to play her if a movie were made about her and something about really admiring Ellen Degeneres and k.d. lang....I think I actually have that interview somewhere. I can find it and give you the exact wording if anyone wants it.
So, no, I'm not going to believe that she' married until I see it in writing for myself. Or she calls me up and tells me.
I'm really not as bad as I sound. And wish me a happy birthday, dammit, because I turned 32 today!
Happy Birthday MirrenFan!
*lifting a glass to you*
Thank you for the exhaustive research (I thought I'd have to hire a PI). I appreciate the added info (though I don't like the boy-lover stuff much ;p, *not bashing Bi's* )
BTW: Always embrace your inner bad-ass!

Maybe they're not married
Firstly Happy Birthday Mirrenfan. After reading recent posts on here maybe they're not married, BUT I do think they're in a long-term relationship. The poster on datalounge seemed convinced they were married. Also on the directory 192 page they're (mcteer & portal) are listed as living together. I really hate the pic of them together as she does look quite quite in love with him.
VILE !
I am interested in what mirrenfan was saying about an interview where she mentions ellen and kd lang. It would be good if you could post a link here. I do become suspicious sometimes of actresses who have a gay fan base who play up to it though.
"directory 192"
?, my dear trequk, can you enlighten me!?
Thanks!
Christmas? Christmas means dinner, dinner means death! Death means carnage; Christmas means carnage!

Hi Gypsywee, I
Hi Gypsywee,
I used 192 as a directory to see if she was living with anyone. Its just an online directory. You can use it to get peoples addresses but have to pay a fee for the info.
Quite a useful little tool though x

Thanks for the tip Trequk
It could save me from more heartache in the future!

I'm convinced she's SINGLE
Happy Birthday MirrenFan! Oh yes, I know of the Helen Mirren Appreciation Society but never joined. I should though because I love love love Helen. Good investigative reporting on Janet lol. I'm now convinced that she's NOT married. She may be bi - sorry to say that gypsywee.
We may never know at this point
Thank you for the birthday wishes:-) Treguk, The interview I was referring to is in print. I believe it's actually from a book about acting. Someone from HMAS sent it to me. I'll grab it tomorrow and post it and cite the source. I don't feel like getting up at the moment. Well, technically it is tomorrow, but I haven't gone to bed yet so it doesn't count.
Gypsywee-sadly, the exhaustive research comes from being incredibly lazy and putting off the things I should really be doing instead of sitting on my ass and messing around on the computer. As far as being a bad-ass...I wish I were. I curse like a truck driver. Does that count?
PaintedLady-you should check out HMAS. It's great. Especially for lazy people like me. There are people there that do all of the work for you. Just about daily people post new articles or updates about appearances, new projects, photos, stuff about her book. You will never be at a loss for anything Helen. It's a great little community, too. Mostly all women and surprisingly (or maybe not) quite a lot of lesbians. She is all over the place and has been for a year and half so there is never really any real down time.
Yes it counts!
First, sitting on your ass for hours on end takes hard work! Second, cursing like a "truck driver" is priceless in badassdom! So, in my opinion, you are a full-fledged "bad ass!" Own it!
Christmas? Christmas means dinner, dinner means death! Death means carnage; Christmas means carnage!
-Ferdinand the duck
It doesn't count that much
I don't give my stamp of approval yet. A full fledged bad ass is more than cursing like a truck driver. You got to spill it out and not give a shit about looking good. You gotta speak your mind and maybe piss off a few people. A badass doesn't care about being popular or cool. They usually drink, smoke and curse.
Badassdom means a lot to me lol. The club is limited.
Bad ass bonding ...
Embrace it, ladies. love it. own it. work it.
yes.
And what’s he then that says I play the villain,
When this advice is free I give, and honest
Here's the part of the interview thing
It's from a book called Performing Women. Since I only have a photocopy of Janet's interview, I don't have any of the credits, but it's on page 228 and from another part of the interview she says she's 43 (she talks about not giving a toss about getting older.) Please forgive any typos. I have a horrid headache.
Interviewer: Are there any particular women who have inspired you?
Janet: Several. The ones, who I went and saw, who were the icons in my youth and they remain as such, are Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. Elsewhere, Ellen Degeneres is brilliant, and she really makes me laugh. Standing up and being gay, being funny and having her own show. She's great. Also, I worked with Olympia Dukakis on The Intended and she's another excellent actress of a different generation to me, who's had the great pleasure of working with Uta Hagen. Uta was one of the leaders, and when I was in college, her book was my Bible. She came to see the show and we became friends, which was incredible for me. If I wanted to be anyone, I'd quite like to be Annie Lennox and somebody funny. I'd like to be a cross between Annie Lennox, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Ellen Degeneres, k.d. lang, with a slash of Dolly Parton, just for humour.
Discuss......
At least we know she likes
At least we know she likes lesbians...

Not Married
Hey there ladies, I come bearing yet more hope, lol! There's actually a Charlie Rose Janet McTeer interview on youtube and she specifically says that she is UNMARRIED and has NO CHILDREN!!! and there's loads more stuff which would suggest she plays for the best team.....
go figure...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXFSee1FROU

Sparkly
long long ago
I LOVE that interview--but it was recorded in 1997...a lot can happen in a decade. Not that I've completely given up hope!

She looks like a lesbian to me
I love that interview! Janet looked like a lesbian to me. I liked when she hid her face when Charlie showed a clip of NY Times reporter talking about her performance in A Doll's House. She was so effin cute. She's an amazon sex goddess, a connoisseur of accents and a great actor.
But then again that interview was 10 years ago... still.
Hahahaha
I love the amazon sex goddess description! My friend and I call her McSexy. She does do accents pretty damn well, doesn't she? She's just friggin' amazing. And I know you asked in another thread but, no, I will not divulge details about the script yet. It's going well now, but you never know if/when it will tank. I will say that I tried to make it have a universal theme so it didn't turn into a cheesy lesbian male fantasy fullfilment porn fest kind of thing so it will appeal to all. Well, all who don't think standing next to a gay person will make them gay or give them cooties. But yes, in my very rich fantasy life, Helen and Janet play the leads :-) Aaahhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Incredibly sad...
Follow these links, my friends, even though they are at least 7 years old, it doesn't look good. Now go weep like a baby as I did.

Yes, the link really is that long. Just trust me.
The truth is a bitter pill...
Maybe I shouldn't have asked the question if I didn't want to know the
wronganswer... What's done is done.I have to admit that I logged on last night, read the latest posts, promptly logged off and went to bed. This morning I woke up with a cold...coincidence? I think not.
Anyway, thanks for all of the hard work and expert sleuthing!
GW

I'm sorry, GW
I'm wondering about the coincidence thing myself. I had a horrible day today, aside from the lovely "wintry mix" weather we're having (my steps are truly dangerous right now...completely iced over), and am in a generally foul mood. Not my usual jovial self. Sorry guys. I normally would not attribute it to something like this, but it makes you wonder.
I did get surprise in the mail. I had ordered a CD called "When Love Speaks." It's a bunch of RADA grads reading Shakespeare Sonnets with some music on it. It's absolutely beautiful. Of course Janet is on there. She reads Sonnet 57- Being your slave, what should I do but tend. And it was recorded in 2002. Why today?
Sonnet 57
Being your slave what should I do but tend
Upon the hours and times of your desire?
I have no precious time at all to spend,
Nor services to do till you require.
Nor dare I chide the world-without-end hour,
Whilst I, my sovereign, watch the clock for you,
Nor think the bitterness of absence sour,
When you have bid your servant once adieu.
Nor dare I question with my jealous thought,
Where you may be, or your affairs suppose,
But like a sad slave stay and think of nought
Save where you are how happy you make those.
Quite Nice
Jumping in
Welcome
MirrenFan...you're killing me
How can she not be ours? Seriously?
It's really late, I've had a hard day, but thats a great pic of Janet...she IS a godess!
Oh, Starlettels--welcome. But PLEASE don't entertain any Janet lezbo fantasies until you've ready every post and clicked every link. *fair warning*
XO
Gypsywee
Oh.....I know :(
I'm sorry GW
Go over to the other thread for some distraction. I went on a Lena hunt last night. I'm still in a bad mood though. This weather is not good for people prone to migraines. Or those who have just had a crushing blow like we've had. I figured I would try to keep my mourning over here so as not to bring down the mood of the other thread. How's your cold? Any better?
Don't worry about crushing Starlett's dreams. She knows already. She's a good friend of mine. We met over on HMAS many moons ago and I told her about this place. So actually, if her dreams are crushed, it's my fault. And yes, we did start calling her McSexy. I won't tell you what we now call Helen. Glad you finally dragged your ass on over here, btw, Starlett (it's weird not using your name.)
See you lovelies later. I have to finish Christmas shopping after work tonight. If my head doesn't explode first.
Tis true
I will blame Mirrenfan for my shattered dreams! ;) I'm the one that sent her the interview where Janet mentioned Ellen and kd lang. And yes, McSexy is what Janet has been christened by us. Helen has a name too, but I won't tell if Mirrenfan won't! Haha! .......Oh, and Mirrenfan, it is weird not calling you by name....I always start to type it and I have to go back!
I can't help it
I love her too...always will
Alas...
Did you know....
That her best friend and agent is a woman called Phyllida Lloyd who is a lesbian? They've played lovers on the stage when she played Petruchio.....(see above)
