Given her interview in Complex magazine a few weeks ago (noted by Malinda in BLWE), I was a little surprised when I noticed that Alicia Keys' new album, As I Am, is available for preview in its entirety at LOGO.
Maybe this is her way of asking for forgiveness?

"what's this gay sh*t?"
Alicia Keys
Yeah, what'd she say? I absolutely love 'No One' and had to download it off iTunes ahead of the album. Whatever she said would have to be really bad for me to not buy the album as well.

Alicia's careless words
What She Said
Malinda quoted it in BLWE a few weeks ago:
---
The funny thing about this--regardless of Alicia Keys' sexuality--she's calling the album, As I Am and here's what she said about it:
She wants people to be themselves, on one hand, and celebrate who they are, but then makes homophobic comments? Seems like a bit of a disconnect.
Two weeks later she dug the
Alicia's homophobic comments...
I agree
I love, love, love Alicia and was a huge fan from the start. I don't think what she said was meant to be as harsh as it sounds. Pause* Yeah, it was pretty rough, but I think she has always been shrouded in industry insider based gay rumors and to protect her image and keep her on level with Beyonce and Rihanna and all the other one-name heavy hitters she feels the need to hide. I might even believe she's bi, but I don't think she's straight.
Patience is a virtue ladies, and forgiveness divine!
More AK and press homophobia
Alicia Keys: 'I used to look rough'
Tuesday, October 23 2007, 12:44 BST
By Kimberley Dadds
The singer's sexuality has been regularly questioned since her music career took off in 2001.
She denies she is a lesbian but admitted that her image and attitude understandably caused fans to wonder.
She said: "I was definitely rough around the edges. I look back at certain interviews and I'm like, 'Damn! Did I have to look that hard? Did I have to do my hair that way?'
"I could see why people couldn't see the diamond in the rough. I didn't take it to heart. I know what I am. I know it's not true."
I used to look rough?
Plus
We've all seen the pictures with her and her lady friend. It's not like they're making out or anything, but the pictures are fairly intimate. And these aren't pictures from when she first came out, either...
The way I look at it, maybe she's straight, maybe she's not. Honestly, I think it's her personal business...I'm fine admiring her beauty and musical ability regardless...but when she starts making homophobic comments...eh, it just pushes my buttons (and not in a good way). I just want to shake her and say: Alicia, hun, if there are people out there who think you're a lesbian, homophobic comments aren't going to change their minds. Ask Larry Craig.

As for the album, I've heard it in its entirety now and I'm still on the fence about it. I'm a fan of her music and this album just doesn't hit you in the same way her first two did. It's growing on me a bit more with each spin, but right now, I'm ambivalent.
That said, I love "Lesson Learned" (she and John Mayer sound great together, almost as good as her and Adam Levine) and "Like You'll Never See Me Again"...wow...all I can say it that track is a must on any mixtape that you've got for those intimate moments. Seriously. It's a must have.
Rough=Lesbian?!!
oh snap I am psychic!
As I am-soooooo damn good
Well, from what i know about Alicia Keys...
Singled Out
Alicia Keys and Common have been friends for a long time and while there have been rumors, I don't think they've ever admitted to being anything more than that. It does seem odd that they're both starring in each other's videos right now, but I've read elsewhere that Common was dating another woman from his video (Serena Williams).
The last interview I saw with AK said she was single.
Sidenote: I ::heart:: Common. He is to me what Tyson Beckford and Lebron James are to Jill Bennett :)
As I Am
As Pecola noted, the album does take some getting used to and definitely doesn't "hit" u the way the first two did. My personal fav on the album is Tell You Something (Nana's Reprise). There can be no mixtape without that song on it and for some reason I could never listen to it just once either.
I too, am suspect of the Common thingy but it doesn't matter one way or another. She can deny it all she wants (heck, so many before her has done it.) but it shows. Kiseki, I totally agree with you, although those pics aren't all that intimate, one can feel and see the connection there. Just in the mere way they sit together. How contented and inlove does AK look, lounging on that beach chair? Only one thing could have her giving off that aura of contentment.
Also, am I the only one who can see that AK isn't comfortable with all the "soft" stuff. Seriously, look at the video for No One, she looks so uncomfortable with that do and outfit on the chair. Look at that pic and the pic that was on her first album cover and the comfort level is soooo evident. She just appears "off" in her videos since the "soft" look. And another thing, (and it leads back to what pecola mentioned about not taking every opportunity to denounce being gay), has anyone else noticed that she seems to be taking every opportunity she gets to discuss her new femme/glammed up look? I mean, we see it everytime we see her, does she really need to say it? Every mag article and interview has mention of it.
With all that said though. I love her, love her work, she's talented, she's hardworking, got mad skills (instrumentally and vocally) and will one day proclaim her gayness... (meaning happiness...lol.)
Oh yeah, the album...
I think it's fantastic, the best she's done yet. My fave is "I Need You" with "Wreckless Love" in a close second.
Does anyone else wonder why "reckless" is spelled with a W? Because I refuse to believe it was an accident in my blind adoration, maybe she's talking about sex in a car avoiding a wreck. :) Crazy love, but not the type that totals your new Benz.
Back to the music: Throughout a really well-done album! Get it!
Interview in the Times today...
I imagine the pause was about the word “partner”. Earlier on Keys had uttered the words “and my partner…” and it shocked me. It was the first time she had even admitted to having one. There have been lots of assumptions about this. For a while people assumed it was the man she’s had a long-term writing partnership with, Kerry “Krucial” Brothers. But she’s never confirmed this. I have heard from other people that her partner is a woman. For the most part Keys enjoys toying with the intrigue, but part of me feels that soon she would rather have that over."

partner?
Partner...
I've read this interview for Times and I get the same impression the journalist got: I think it's not gonna take long for her to come out.
And I do think "No One" has a gay subtext, as said in another thread...
I love the album but
I love Alicia more! She is so gorgeous in person too. I met her a couple weeks ago and O-M-G. She is so sweet but there is definitely a vibe about her. Something about the way she plays piano too...who knows. As far as her comments go, I kind of take it with a grain of salt cuz Alicia is a really down-to-earth, real, accepting kinda person.
kristina.michelle
I had no idea....
She made those comments. I hope one day she discusses those comments with the gay community. I admit though my weak gaydar goes off on her. It had nothing to do with her being rough or anything but something about her just seems to say not straight. I think she could possibly be bisexual.
