Alicia Keys' New Album

Given her interview in Complex magazine a few weeks ago (noted by Malinda in BLWE), I was a little surprised when I noticed that Alicia Keys' new album, As I Am, is available for preview in its entirety at LOGO.

Maybe this is her way of asking for forgiveness?

Forgiven, not forgotten

Hmmm Ms Keys really pissed me off with those seemingly throw away, but thoughtless comments. I'm hoping that maybe we're reading too much into what she said so I'm willing to give her a second chance. But I do feel as though my love for has been somewhat tainted.
The new single is a definite grower and I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't going straight to Logo now to check out the rest of the album!

I love her new song but when I read those comments, I couldn't listen to the song without getting very annoyed, so I stopped listening.  I'm sure I'll get over it though now that it seems that she's trying.

"what's this gay sh*t?"

The only reason Miss Keys seems so homophobic is cuz she is gay herself. GF is so far back in the closet she just doesn't want anyone outing her. In time. In time. 10 years from now she'll be gracing the cover of "The Advocate" and I would bet money on that. I've listened to her new album 3x now and it is GREAT! My die-hard love for Alicia is back with a vengeance. Yeah, I still wanna marry her homophobic ass.

Alicia Keys

Yeah, what'd she say?  I absolutely love 'No One' and had to download it off iTunes ahead of the album.  Whatever she said would have to be really bad for me to not buy the album as well.

Alicia's careless words

I've been trying to find the thread/article on here where the quote is but it's basically what Kiseki's post is titled. It could be one of those things that taken out of context sounds much worse, or vice versa. Harpy help!-I thought you might know in the cavernous volts of Afterellen where the quotes that sparked this storm might be.

I agree though that any homophobia that AK may be displaying could well be because she plays for our team herself.  It may be wishful thinking, because well she is so damn hot, talented and that VOICE, both singing and speaking WOW. However both here and elsewhere lovely Alicia has set off many a gaydar bells ringing!
Can't listen to the album at the mo as my mac doesn't let me but I certainly will be buying/downloading it and I can not wait to see her in London next March.

And if she needs a little one to one tuition on how to get in touch with her inner queer than I'd certainly be happy to help!

What She Said

Malinda quoted it in BLWE a few weeks ago:

AK: I got the script [for Smoking Aces], I read 30 pages, and I threw it in the trash.

C: Really? Why?
AK: I was like, "There's like every stereotype ever in there. And what's this gay s---, too? So maybe two weeks later, my agent called me and said, "Read it all the way through, you'll be feeling it." So I dug it out and I read it. And the more I read, the more that I got it. I was like, "Wow, there's nothing people will expect from me less than this." And that's what I wanted when it came to film. I don't want to be the singing, piano-playing "girl role." I want to be something that's not who I am.

C: Did you have any reservations or concerns that playing a gay character was going to spawn rumors?
AK: Well, my character wasn't the gay character, my partner was. But there was kind of a —

C: Tension?
AK: There was originally a whole scene where I confronted her about it, and said, "I feel like you're kind of pushing up on me, what's going on?" They left that out; they wanted it to be very ambiguous, which is cool. I figured that people would probably run with it, and there was a little misconstruing about it, but at the end of the day, it wasn't a big deal.

---

The funny thing about this--regardless of Alicia Keys' sexuality--she's calling the album, As I Am and here's what she said about it:

"The meaning of my album title is really about being yourself. About freedom, about liberation, about breaking the rules, about doing the unexpected, about being excited, and exciting and learning more. And just becoming a better person, because that's what I'm being. It means 'take me as I am.' "

She wants people to be themselves, on one hand, and celebrate who they are, but then makes homophobic comments? Seems like a bit of a disconnect.

Two weeks later she dug the script out of the trash? That girl needs to clean house more often. And sadly, I think her phobe-ness is because she is gay. It's so sad that so many of us spend time denying or self loathing or whatever.

Alicia's homophobic comments...

I really don't believe she is homophobic. She knows she has many gay fans. She also knows lots of them think she bats for their team. Funny story: back in 2001 when Alicia was just coming out, well I was "mildly" obsessed with her. By mildly I mean MANICALLY! I used to frequent her fan forum, set up by HER people. Well, me and this other chick started a thread about Alicia's sexuality. That particular thread got quite a few posts. Actually several pages worth. Turns out a HELL of a lot of us were thinking Alicia was gay. Guess what happened to that thread? It got destroyed! Yes, by Alicia's people. Then the website itself got shut down for "maintenance." Some time later they came back and refused to allow anyone to post about Alicia's alleged non-straight status. Weird? Uh, yeah! So my only conclusion is someone wants to keep Alicia's not-so-big secret hush hush. One of the best ways to counter gay rumours is to act ultra-straight and homophobic. Alas, I am not that stupid to believe it!
avalaurent's picture

I agree

I love, love, love Alicia and was a huge fan from the start.  I don't think what she said was meant to be as harsh as it sounds. Pause* Yeah, it was pretty rough, but I think she has always been shrouded in industry insider based gay rumors and to protect her image and keep her on level with Beyonce and Rihanna and all the other one-name heavy hitters she feels the need to hide.  I might even believe she's bi, but I don't think she's straight.

Patience is a virtue ladies, and forgiveness divine!

Alicia Keys: 'I used to look rough'

Tuesday, October 23 2007, 12:44 BST

By Kimberley Dadds

Alicia Keys: 'I used to look rough'
Alicia Keys has admitted that she used to look 'rough' at the start of her career, and she can understand why people thought that she was a lesbian.

The singer's sexuality has been regularly questioned since her music career took off in 2001.

She denies she is a lesbian but admitted that her image and attitude understandably caused fans to wonder.

She said: "I was definitely rough around the edges. I look back at certain interviews and I'm like, 'Damn! Did I have to look that hard? Did I have to do my hair that way?'

"I could see why people couldn't see the diamond in the rough. I didn't take it to heart. I know what I am. I know it's not true."

This is another story doing the rounds which paints neither the press or lovely Alicia in the most enlightened of lights

Kiseki's picture

I used to look rough?

OMG! What a lame f*cking article! Actually, Alicia, you used to look AND act rough. It's more than looks that make people think you're a big lesbo.
pecola's picture

Plus

We've all seen the pictures with her and her lady friend. It's not like they're making out or anything, but the pictures are fairly intimate. And these aren't pictures from when she first came out, either...

The way I look at it, maybe she's straight, maybe she's not. Honestly, I think it's her personal business...I'm fine admiring her beauty and musical ability regardless...but when she starts making homophobic comments...eh, it just pushes my buttons (and not in a good way). I just want to shake her and say: Alicia, hun, if there are people out there who think you're a lesbian, homophobic comments aren't going to change their minds. Ask Larry Craig.

---

As for the album, I've heard it in its entirety now and I'm still on the fence about it. I'm a fan of her music and this album just doesn't hit you in the same way her first two did. It's growing on me a bit more with each spin, but right now, I'm ambivalent.

That said, I love "Lesson Learned" (she and John Mayer sound great together, almost as good as her and Adam Levine) and "Like You'll Never See Me Again"...wow...all I can say it that track is a must on any mixtape that you've got for those intimate moments. Seriously. It's a must have.

tucksioni's picture

Rough=Lesbian?!!

I know that article, which has been reported in various different places in the UK made me soooooo cross. Because we all know rough=lesbian
The fact that it goes so undissected that people can unquestonably report being rough (ie in press talk unattractive) as equated with being gay just shows you how far there is to go.
Then again I think I did prefer Alicia in her earlier, less polished/airbrushed images so...
Agree though Kiseki, it ain't just her looks that has set gaydar bells ringing.

Kiseki's picture

oh snap I am psychic!

I've actually never seen those photos before, but that chick is Erika Rose. She's been with Alicia since the beginning. Alicia made her tour manager so that she could be there on the road. Back in 2001 I hung around outside David Letterman to meet Alicia. Yeah, Erika was there too. From the way they interacted, and the rumours I heard, I KNEW that was her GF. Shit! Those photos are pretty obvious though. Look at how butch Alicia sits! ;) Oh, and I LOVE "Lesson Learned." I think this album is supergreat. Alicia's voice and technical capabilities have really matured.
tucksioni's picture

As I am-soooooo damn good

The gorgeous girl has gone and done it again-I lurve the new album.
Only listened to it a couple of times and there are already about half a dozen stand out tracks.
Her voice just gets better and better. The songwriting is up to Motown classic standard and it's great to hear a soul/RnB record that hasn't been over produced.
Can not wait to see her here in London next Feb, a week before and after I see Tegan and Sara. What a couple of weeks that's going to be!

Well, from what i know about Alicia Keys...

supposedily, she was engaged to this one guy about three years back. she mentioned it on BET. then she took a break so she could get marry. but she's back and apparently her marriage didn't go through because she no longer has the ring nor is she engage. i know she's not homophopic. she was just complaining about how "fake" the roles in the script seemed. the gay character was the"fakest" of them all. now, she's supposedily going out with the poetic rapper, Common. i always say the word "supposedily" because you never know. my sister is a BIG!!!!!!! fan of Alicia Keys, ever since she came out when I was 6th or 7th grade with the song "Fallin". and yeah, i think something is up with Alicia's sexuality along with the singer Ciara. and there hasn't been a time when I have been proven wrong about suspecting people to be gay, bi, or les.

Singled Out

Alicia Keys and Common have been friends for a long time and while there have been rumors, I don't think they've ever admitted to being anything more than that. It does seem odd that they're both starring in each other's videos right now, but I've read elsewhere that Common was dating another woman from his video (Serena Williams).

The last interview I saw with AK said she was single.

Sidenote: I ::heart:: Common. He is to me what Tyson Beckford and Lebron James are to Jill Bennett :)

As I Am

As Pecola noted, the album does take some getting used to and definitely doesn't "hit" u the way the first two did.  My personal fav on the album is Tell You Something (Nana's Reprise).  There can be no mixtape without that song on it and for some reason I could never listen to it just once either.

I too, am suspect of the Common thingy but it doesn't matter one way or another.  She can deny it all she wants (heck, so many before her has done it.) but it shows.  Kiseki, I totally agree with you, although those pics aren't all that intimate, one can feel and see the connection there.  Just in the mere way they sit together.  How contented and inlove does AK look, lounging on that beach chair?  Only one thing could have her giving off that aura of contentment.

Also, am I the only one who can see that AK isn't comfortable with all the "soft" stuff.  Seriously, look at the video for No One, she looks so uncomfortable with that do and outfit on the chair.  Look at that pic and the pic that was on her first album cover and the comfort level is soooo evident.  She just appears "off" in her videos since the "soft" look. And another thing, (and it leads back to what pecola mentioned about not taking every opportunity to denounce being gay), has anyone else noticed that she seems to be taking every opportunity she gets to discuss her new femme/glammed up look?  I mean, we see it everytime we see her, does she really need to say it?  Every mag article and interview has mention of it.

With all that said though.  I love her, love her work, she's talented, she's hardworking, got mad skills (instrumentally and vocally) and will one day proclaim her gayness... (meaning happiness...lol.)

avalaurent's picture

Oh yeah, the album...

I think it's fantastic, the best she's done yet.  My fave is "I Need You" with "Wreckless Love" in a close second.

Does anyone else wonder why "reckless" is spelled with a W?  Because I refuse to believe it was an accident in my blind adoration, maybe she's talking about sex in a car avoiding a wreck. :)  Crazy love, but not the type that totals your new Benz.

Back to the music: Throughout a really well-done album!  Get it!

Interview in the Times today...

"And do you tell your partner the deepest darkest things? Long pause. “To an extent.”

I imagine the pause was about the word “partner”. Earlier on Keys had uttered the words “and my partner…” and it shocked me. It was the first time she had even admitted to having one. There have been lots of assumptions about this. For a while people assumed it was the man she’s had a long-term writing partnership with, Kerry “Krucial” Brothers. But she’s never confirmed this. I have heard from other people that her partner is a woman. For the most part Keys enjoys toying with the intrigue, but part of me feels that soon she would rather have that over."

Partner...

I've read this interview for Times and I get the same impression the journalist got: I think it's not gonna take long for her to come out.

And I do think "No One" has a gay subtext, as said in another thread...

I love the album but

I love Alicia more! She is so gorgeous in person too. I met her a couple weeks ago and O-M-G. She is so sweet but there is definitely a vibe about her. Something about the way she plays piano too...who knows. As far as her comments go, I kind of take it with a grain of salt cuz Alicia is a really down-to-earth, real, accepting kinda person.

I had no idea....

She made those comments. I hope one day she discusses those comments with the gay community. I admit though my weak gaydar goes off on her. It had nothing to do with her being rough or anything but something about her just seems to say not straight. I think she could possibly be bisexual.
