Alicia Keys "No One" SubtextAnyone else reading a queer subtext in Alicia's new single "No One"? I tend to see gayness just about everywhere, but the lyrics are especially gender neutral. I doubt the album will be this open to interpretation. Afterall, she has vehemently denied being a lesbian. Thoughts?

Ms.Keyes
I would like to say hello to all the LADIES here... I just became a memeber TODAY..
I was doing a little reading and snooping around came, this topic caught my interest... ummm Alicia, I do beleive that Alicia is one of us, however she will never come out of because of her career, We all remember when Alicia came on the scene....HOT AS CHILLI PEPPERS... with the braids, the hat to the side, jeans the easy breezy coolness about her.. the real Alicia... remember? Then she was out of the scene for a minute, then she came back ALL DOLLED up, at times looking very uncomfortable, in the dresses and heels...her publiclist making a image change for her.., Did it work? In outter appearance it has changed, but her mannerism are still the same... BUTCH and a SEXY BUTCH i might Add.. When she is older and has accomplished what she wants then she will make a statment......

Kelly Clarkson? Really?
~Alicia Keys~
I have thought that she was
Alicia Keys
gender neutral + wishful thinking = queer subtext
QrOptimist, I agree that the lyrics to "no one" are gender neutral. Maybe it was a leap of logic by saying that the gender neutrality made the song queer. By having gender neutral lyrics, it opens the song up to interpretation. If we make the song autobiographical, "People keep talking, they can say what they like" summons the queer subtext, to me, in light of how the mainstream media has questioned her sexuality for many years.
Because I want to believe Alicia is family, I want this song to be her coming out song, albeit that wont happen for whatever reason.
Harder for black celebs to be "out"?
I've been hearing the queer argument about Alicia Keys for a while now and she doesn't "ping" for me. But celebrities very rarely do. I mean, Ellen D in the 80s, Jodie, of course, because she was so secretive, but not really Alicia.
I'm against being in the closet in general and, as an African American, I know how homophobic the AA community can be. Some AA LBGTs believe people like Alicia and Queen Latifah (if gay) will lose their marketability and some of their fan base if they come out.
I don't know how true that is, but if these black celebrities are listening to the black people around them, it makes sense that they wouldn't come out.
But I've heard some things Alicia has said regarding her role in the film, "Smokin Aces," and if she is gay, she is deeply closeted.
And that's sad.
I agree that it's harder
I agree that it's harder for black celebrities to come out. As a black woman I find it harder to come out to black acquaintances. I can just imagine how hard it must be for a black entertainer who has limited roles to begin with, to come out. What would Eddy Murphey's career look like if he came out (assuming he were gay;). I've also got to wonder how we can ever get past that sticking point if more black celebrities don't come out. Unfortunately, I'd have to be asking, Eddie, Queen, Missy etc. to place their careers on the sacrificial alter while struggling to keep a foothold in white Hollywood. How can I do that? How can I not?...
All artists, if they are to survive, are forced, at last, to tell the whole story.

Gender neutral?

I THINK I HAVE THE ANSWER
I have terrible gaydar when
I have terrible gaydar when it comes to music.
I can listen to Melissa Etheridge and still think it is totally dedicated to a man.
I think it's because I tend to think NOBODY is gay, haha.
You can't shake hands with a clenched fist.

musical gaydar
Yeah, I have horrible musical gaydar too! Especially because you don't know what(or who) the artist is thinking about when they composed or recorded the song.
I think many songs can be genderless, regardless of the pronouns, because of the sentiment of the melody.
But I'm getting off track; I think it's unlikely Alicia Keys is homosexual, because I also tend to put people into the 'straight' column, until they state anything for themselves.
