Anybody with Phobias here?

I'm phobic, trying to get over it. It's a really stupid phobia, but hugely detrimental at this point in my life. I'm just wondering how you all got over your phobias, and what meds worked for you, ect.

:) Thanks much!

Phobias

well it depends on the phobia...i have been taking 1000 mg of depakote and 25mg of seraquil daily for about 5 months now and its been working pretty well in the last month or so. if i was to list my phobias we would be here all night so i wont. what i will say is that you NEED to put yourself in uncomfortable situations to make this better. if you dont then the phobia will get worse and you will end up like me in a few years with a list instead of having one or two.

I guess i would have to say that i have a weird phobia...I'm freaked out by dolls i guess its becuz they look too human or somethin idk they just give me tha creeps....im not talkin about mannequins like that....i mean like Barbie n those Porcelain things....geez just walkin into a room with those things in them.....*shudders*

mine are

Dogs and needles. Needles for obvious reasons, but people always seem to have trouble with the Dog one, its not like i hate dogs it's just that for some reason they terrify me, i dont care if there gonna hurt or bite me but if im around one without a lead im very likely to cry.

Advice would be it takes time to get over a phobia, i mean it depends on what yours is but i used to freak out if a car drove past me with the dogs head sticking out the window. It took me a couple of years but now i only get upset if they're near me without a lead rather than just freaking out knowing they're within 200 mtres of me.

Good luck with whatever it is :)

Water

I don't know that I would consider it a phobia, but I am not a huge fan of water.  I can't stand water near my face and can't take a shower without a towel within arms' reach.  I had a really hard time in swim class when I was a kid because I just couldn't put my head under water.  I ended up learning to swim on my own, and only with the aid of a swimming mask.

commitment phobe

I joke about having a fear of commitment. But truth is I am afraid to waste any more of my good years in the wrong relationship.  I don't think there is a pill for that...  But if my fear was to the point of diminishing my quality of life, I would totally seek professional help.

Spiders

My phobia is completely pedestrian: spiders. We live in this really old, sorta spooky house, and I refer to the basement as the spider kingdom. I won't even go anywhere near the old coal bin. I send one of the kids down there once a month with the shop vac and have them hoover up the little bastards. I feel all crawly just talking about it.
Harpy's picture

Yep, spiders

Yeah, I hear ya.  Spiders suck.  In Georgia we had these 'flying spiders' or jumping spiders in the basement.  They could jump like crickets but looked like spiders.  Ungh!

Oh, and the damn wolf spiders there are just hideous.

OOoh, I HATE them..

We have an unfinished basement in our house, and I often refer to the arachnid population down there as the "cannibalistic cultist spiders". Adds a little drama, you know? In recent years I've gotten over my paralyzing fear of bees, which is nice... I thank my uncle for that one. :)

wolf spiders

I was always f-cked up over spiders, but moving to Spain, after living in London for a number of years, cured me partly... spiders in UK start looking cute, after you meet a wolf spider

moved to Malaga, met my first one on the wall of my house during the afternoon, it hid somewhere after a while, windows were open, and I couldn't sleep all night, thinking about the monstrous size of it

started seing them everywhere, especially in the mornings, at least a dozen of them drowned in all my swimming pools, giant long legged meaty bastards floating in the jacuzzi, jesus... awful

scared of walking to the stable block to feed the horses at night, because the wolf spiders set out to hunt at night, they tend to run across your feet every now and then...  their huge eyes which reflect light are just creepy

they tend to get lost in the houses and freak you out by running out at sprint from under the furniture, sitting on the fourposter's curtains... *shudder*

had a wolf spider mother running across my carpet one day, kids sprayed the bastard and hundreds of little baby spiders jumped off her back and started running in all directions... nightmare

couldn't have lived in Andalusia without a can of something poisonous on hand and without the sticky barrier sprays

... moved to Bohemia two years ago, local spiders are nothing compared to the wolf spiders, thanks god

Phobias

Hi there. Real phobias arise in our lives for different reasons.  When I was younger I had a very real fear of germs that led to compulsive hand washing.  Later, in therapy, I learned that these types of phobias develop from a deap need to bring some type of manageable control into one's life, often after one has dealt with uncontrolable and/or distressing situations in her life.

In my case,  I was abused by a "friend" of the family when I was quite young and the germ phobia and some other irrational fears emerged when I was 11-ish.  I fought my way through my phobias then, only for them to reappear in myy 40s.  Fortunately, good help and medicines were available this time.   While Paxil helped me a great deal, I also recommend getting some counseling to "unpack" some of the feelings that come along with your phobia(s).  It can make a tremendous difference in your freedom to live life.

I do wish you well!

hrtofsurfing's picture

i agree.....

Paxil helped me with my anxiety, but it did not react well with other medications that i have to take, so they put me on lexapro which is good as well.  But i have to agree that counseling has helped me the most with coming to terms w/ the phobias, which stemmed from other things.
perpetual muse's picture

:)

Thanks much for the advice... I'm currently on Lexapro and Welbutrin, neither of which seem to be preventing panic attacks, unfortinately. XD But yeah, I'm goinig to thearpy for various things, and we've just identified the phobia, so hopefully now we can go in the right direction with treatment.

Thanks again, and good for you for fighting through that!!!

Fear of dark closed spaces

I have a strong fear of the dark closed spaces.  My fear was so bad back in my college days when I took a took photography. My classmates had to hold me down  in the darkroom so I wouldn't expose their film to the light by running out the door.  I  cried  and developed a panic attack. My 2nd scariest moment ever.  My first  moment happened when my brother and I were kids, he had locked me the closet where it was dark and no place to escape.  I screamed, paniced and cried.  He thought it was funny. I thought I was going to die.

I'm still trying to get over my fear of dark closed spaces but I realized I need to see a hypnotherapist for the cure.

Coulrophobia & Trypanophobia

The fear of Clowns & Needles....

Xanax helps alot....

my phobias are not that severe to physically crimple me but I do have a bad reaction and fear does ensue. I ran away from Clowns or tell them to sod off and even have the urge to do bodily harm to them.

As for needles, I avoid them like the plague.  I'm like a child that needs candy or something else to mentally forget the trauma.

I have the same phobia. I think it is more of a fear of me hurting others and not myself. I'm fine with motorbikes though.

Ping Me's picture

Meds

Just a little FYI...most meds that are offered for such "treatment" can kill your sex drive. Think about your phobia and keep asking yourself "so what?". If you hate spiders and you're worried one will touch you....ask yourself "so what?" If you have an answer for that then ask again..."so what?".

Trust me. You will eventually reach a final answer.

perpetual muse's picture

Yeaaaah...

Found that one out first hand. XD Sucky, but, unfortunately, I really do need the meds. As to the "so what" questions... it's great advice, but the stupid thing about phobias is that they are totally irrational (or can be, as it is in my case). Asking myself "so what" doesn't really help simply because even though the 25% of my brain that I can conciously use knows the answer, the other 75% doesn't give a shit and keeps pumping out the wrong chemicals.

Still, I REALLY appreciate the advice!! I'll try this next time I got to therapy, just to see what happens. Who knows, maybe it WILL help. :)

Phobias...

Yes. I have a few.

Spiders - They're disgusting. Truly are. And the big ones always have a tendency to just 'pop up' out of nowhere. Example: Ya walk out of a room and WHAM right in front of you on the wall. I can almost hear them yell "Got ya!" Yegh

Clowns - Yeah. IT. The only reason I would be near them is if I have a child with me. I will freeze up and I'll give it the look of death if it even reaches out towards me.

Dolls - Don't nearly freak me out as much as Spiders or Clowns do. But hey. I've seen Child's Play. I don't trust them. Horror Movie Rule - Don't give your kid a doll that talks back.

Bugs - Disgusting. 'nuff said.

Yes I Know. I have issues.

Small Animals

I am scared of small animals...

It is pretty pathetic... it is annoying when freinds say "My pet X, you'll like her/him" and then they get offended that I am still scared.

I have had quite a few bad experiences with small animals, when I was small a cat scratched my face, and a few years ago when I was sleeping a rat jumped on my face (the house was being renovated and there was no roof)

Clowns. Mostly paintings of clowns or clown dolls. No I take that back because going ot the circus was a tramatic time in my life. and one time when I was working at a grocery store (I was almost 18!) I almost cried because a clown came through my register.Elavators/escalators. I get dizzy and hot as hell in the face when I'm on these. When I was traveling in London in the city I almost died. I used to be claustrophobic but not so much anymore. Santa Clause. Puppet people.

top fears

i completely agree but in the opposite order, i just received three shots from the hottest nurse in the world two days ago. she was hot but idk how she passed medical school because she was such a ditz, she asked if i wanted two shots in one arm and one in the other, and i was like sure, but then she proceeded to ask which shot as in medication wise i would like in which arm as though a high schooler would have the slightest clue or any opinion to that question...omg so stupid. but frogs, eww and feet omg keep them nasty thangs away from me, i make everyone where socks around me and they cant come in bed without socks, big no no.

phobias

i have a strange phobia that came outta nowhere and bit me in the ass which is of caterpillars. i used to love em as a kid but now i completely freak by them. like absolutely terrified and i'd rather be around a snake.

also clowns, gnomes, and glass dolls freak the hell outta me and make me get goosebumps and cold chills. come to think of it...Goosebumps is probably wat started my phobias in the first place :p

and i have a phobia of either being closed too tight in somewhere or being out too open also, like in the center of an ocean with no land...i'd die in the bermuda triangle :p

i'm still working on how to get over mine. I jsut have to push myself and say im' stronger than that and get over it.

Irrational fear:

So just go ahead and list your irrational fear. Recently a friend told me her irrational fear is of drowning, although I don't think that's irrational because we live near the ocean and have swimming pools, I said okay.
Then she asked me mine, my irrational fear is exploding teeth. Now remember it is an irrational fear being asked so that's mine. My friend told me that's a crazy fear and makes no sense even after I explained how it might possibly happen.

Anyhow every one on afterellen what is your irrational fear?

irrational fear

I am scared of being shot when I'm driving at nighttime.  Like someone driving in a car next to me, or one coming down the road from the other direction...for some reason I'm scared that they could shoot me and then drive away and not get caught.  Weird thing is that I have no idea where this came from or when it started.

irrational fear

I am terrified that a semi is going to lose control and run me off the road.  I have never had a bad experiance, but I am just sure that it is going to happen.  There have been times when I was driving and was being passed by semi trucks on both sides, I had to pull off and have other drive, because I just couldn't do it.

scared of the dark

i know a lot of people might laugh but i cant stand the dark. i have the wildest imagination ever, and in the dark, it seems to work in my disadvantage. it feels like im not in control of my surroundings cause i cant see in it very well when its dark. it just totally makes me wanna run out of the room!

bugs and reptiles and animals - i cant handle either very well. i remember having the worse time in the zoo ever! cause i hated all the bugs and the reptiles..snakes and komodo dragons and all others in between! gosh it gives me the creep right now.. and i cant handle some big animals too.

needles - i cant take injections. cause i could literally imagine the needle poking through the skin, howit tugs on the skin till it finally POPS through it. *shivers*

boy do i have issues. :S

same here , butterflies scare me death lol so do caterpillars .. they are disgusting.. actually i hate all insects in general

Another phobia of mine: noises esp loud ones.. i am ultra sensitive to specific noises (to name an example.. i am afraid of  touching metal pots because of the sounds they make , this may sound extremely  bizarre to the majority of u) . have been this way since a very young age..

FirstDibs's picture

noises, oh yeah

never used to bother me, just as I've gotten older it has really changed. It's not just bothersome, it actually feels like a phobia because I can feel my bones rattle or something and I hate that feeling, having all my insides rattle like that. I guess when a noise gets loud enough it can actually rattle us, we can feel the vibrations in our bodies. That rattle, as I say, never used to bother me (I loved to dance! Used to go out dancing every chance I got.) Weird.

I too am freaked out around pots and pans. I love to cook but I have to be the one in charge of the pots and pans so I can minimize the clanging.

some days it's not even worth chewing through the restraints

school.... i can't count

school.... i can't count the amount of times i've dropped out of school because i can't deal with group work, talking in front of the class.. just trying to make conversation with classmates.. probably goes back to being a kid. wasn't exactly the most popular girl in class and this teacher loved yelling at me and making me feel dumb. oh and the other kids.. totally "frozen out".

when i enter a classroom i totally freeze up. get all cold inside.. this cold and hollow feeling. and i start feeling sick.. like i'm gonna puke. and i go mute. and scared everyone is looking and thinking "what's the deal with that freak". it's gotten better though. I think you just have to get yourself out there and work on what scares you.

i'm working on it :P taking nursing classes next year.. so let's just hoooope for the best :P

silent_contemplation's picture

me too!

In my case, it's not just school, it's a broad panicish disorder. It just gets worse while in classrooms. I walk in and have to sit in a corner right by the door, if I don't, I'll start freaking out. Sometimes I can't even go to class, I'll stand right outside the door, looking in and just not be able to force myself to enter. So I'll sit in the hallway and see my class begin and end and I'm just wasting away in the hallway, too afraid to go in. Pretty ridiculous, huh?

Phobias.

I'm rather afraid of needles, of drowning, and of extreme heights. Hell, even standing at the top of an escalator and looking down at the floor underneath makes me shiver. >.< It used to be worse when I was younger though, and I've decided I won't be taking any meds until it gets so bad that I build my life around avoiding all sorts of heights and bodies of water. I rarely get in contact with needles, so there's no real need to worry about it too much, apart from going to doctors, which I loathe, but such is life, I suppose.

So, I play with bugs, I own a snake, I have no problems with sharks or inclosed spaces or even heights.  However, I do have one big fear:

That is unusual

That is hysterical! Do have a fear of turkeys too? What about other birds? Maybe it's a pecking thing... lol.
deathbyblonde's picture

Kinda

Turkey's freak me out a bit too, but not as much as chickens. And it's funny because I have absolutely no problem with other birds (in fact I have owned, in total, 1 parrot, 4 cockateels, and numerous finches).  I don't know, I think it has to do with the fact that 1) I got chased around and pecked at by a group of them as a small child 2) Their "gobbles" are revolting and 3) Really dumb things freak me out.  So, yeah, it's a problem...
