Most overrated movie(s) you've ever seen?

And I'm not talking about, you know, Bratz or something. Has there been a movie that seemed to have been universally praised by critics and/or your friends that left you going WTF?

For me, a big one is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I just didn't care about any of the characters and didn't catch on to the whole hero symbolism.

Brokeback Mountain didn't do a lot for me (obvious reasons, aside). Also, I couldn't stand The English Patient and I watched Boondock Saints at the behest of my friends and thought it was awful.

What are some of yours?

English Patient, or Die, Die, Die, Faster

I have to agree with the English Patient being over rated. Anytime you hope that someone dies faster, you know that you're not only on morally ambiguous ground, but that the director put you there. Juliet Binoche was wonderful, though.

I liked the English Patient

I liked the English Patient =)

I would have to say Lost in Translation. Love Scarlet, but that movie put me to sleep =/

Definately. Im all for increasing the number of female directors but why does Sophia Coppola feel the need to make all her films so pretentious?

Also Lord of the Rings. I'd had enought about 10 minutes in.

The Break Up

Is all I can think of right now.. the movie was awful to watch and it was dull as hell.. and I thought Jen and Vince would've done great.. blah

Everybody talked about this movie being really good... but I found it terribly boring, I could not even watch it to the end..  and that does not happen often.

I love her but...

The movie that killed me was Jodie Foster's Nell.  It may have been a good movie but I couldn't get past the first half hour.  I agree with The English Patient, so boring.  Now I did enjoy Brokeback Mountian.  I actually love that movie.  The bit where he breaks down when he finds his old shirt in Jacks room had me crying.  Blair Witch Project made me have motion sickness with all the camera jostling.  Not to mention the dialogue of that movie pretty much consisted of the F word and thats about it.
Danin's picture

Another Jodie foster one..

I really couldn't get into Flight Plan despite all my friends raving about it.

I heart Huckabees sent me to sleep faster than anything along with The Break-up oh and I went to see Black Dahlia and wanted to gouge my eyes out with a spoon after about 10 minutes, to date that has to be one of the worst films I have ever sat through.

Most Overrated

I think they all our in some form. You hear people talking about this movie or that movie then you go see it and be like why did I just waiste $6 and 2.5 hours on this.

Ugh!

Aviator did suck, although what'shername did a GREAT Katherine Hepburn.  Other duds:  Accidental Tourist (great book though!), Titanic, The Piano

Brokeback Mountain

I hated this film so much, I thought it was completely over rated. I also felt it was quite homophobic, like if you are gay you will either end up alone or beaten to death. I really didn't understand what all the fuss was about with it.

I also didn't really get 2001: A Space Oddessy, I thought it was boring and didn't know why there was about 15 minutes of men jumping about in gorilla suits at the begining!

Walking out of the theater bad....

I actually paid money to go see Ishtar years ago, for those of you who don't recall it.  A musical starring Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman.....set in the desert. Yea, I don't know what I was thinking either...blame it on being young and stupid.

Walked out of the theater and I don't think I have ever done that for any other movie!

totally lost

I was totally unimpressed with Lost In Translation even Scarlett Johansson didn't make it a lot better !!
jinocide's picture

here's a few

- little miss sunshine...waaaay overrated! Left me thinking "that's it?!?!"

- chicago... maybe i just don't get into musicals...i dunno

- amelie... yawn

- flight plan...agreed! way too many long drawn out dramatic pauses

- traffic...should've been called "just another day in american/mexican relations"

- napoleon dynamite...it was ok but way too hyped up

and anything with nick cage or denzel washington

it.pleases.my.creature.'s picture

agree and disagree

i definitely agree about little miss sunshine. it definitely didn't leave me with much of a sense of satisfaction. so many people said it was ssoo good, but i just thought it was ok. but as for amelie, it's one of my favorite moivies of all time! 1-amazing and unique cinematography, 2-great actors (audrey tautou) and 3-so cute and romantic. i also enjoyed traffic.

Movies that ppl are crazy

Movies that ppl are crazy about... and that have no appeal to me:

Independence Day - IMO total crap

Star Wars Ep 1 - I felt like watching one of those jump and run games

Fight Club - saw the movie and was not impressed

Pirates of the Caribbean II - same as fight club

The Graduate - same as above

Top Gun - I don't see what is so spectacular about that movie

Jerry Maguire - never got in to it *yawn*

Apocalypse Now - like the fight scenes... but other than that ... *yawn*

wi5eguy's picture

King Kong

Lol i loved Fight club! All the fighting was awesome... eh just my opinion tho.

The most overrated movie for me is The Exorcist (how can u call that scary?), ohhh and freakin King Kong. Who ever stayed awake during that entire movie has a lot of patience!

Spill Jill's picture

i agree with most

Go Fish (go make a better movie)

The Graduate (graduate to better movie making abilities, ok?)

Titanic (more disastrous than the actual event)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (maybe the point was to make ME want to forget everything)

Wedding Crashers (it made me want to crash as in sleep)

Pretty Woman (pretty sexist)

The Pianist (the pee in this chair in boredom)

Spiderman (a web of atrocity it weaved)

Amelie (I'ma leave.)

I Heart Huckabees (i heart the end of this movie...as in credits...as in blank screen)

Garden State (i wished i was in a comatose state...or in a garden.)

LOVE IT! made it laugh even though this was typed a while ago o(^_____^)o

i agree with someonelse that said the 300 - i didn't care too much for that movie. and of course Titanic! i was 13 when i saw it and i spared no tolerance to expressing my anger at having seen that movie athe time with my friends.

the one movie i really abhor was Ultraviolet. i only wento watch it because my friend is a fan of comic-based turned movies. that was the one movie that made me lose my cool. i absolutely hated it! but i'm fine now :^)

another movie that i think is over-rated and was a total waste of my time and mental energy was the Japanese movie Casshern. FUCK! it makes me swear! buthen again, i'm over it! and i will never watch it again, haha ~

and if anyone wants any suggestions on watching a GOOD movie then...

Shimotsuma Monogatari (Story of Shimotsuma) which of course is in mangled English: Kamikaze Girls. Shimotsuma is a town in Japan and Monogatari means "story" - - - i say it's good - but viewing any movie is alwaysubjective o(^_____^)o *view at your own will*

I love Jodie but...

Probably because I usually have really high expectations for all of Jodie Foster’s movies, I often find myself really disappointed with some of her choices.

     e.g. Maverick—the worst western/comedy ever

Fightplan—I don’t care if her role was supposed to go to a man

                             and she fought for it

Having said that, I’m really excited about The Brave One! And that’s exactly my problem with Jodie movies.

Napoleon Dynamite

I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who love that movie, including everyone I have ever met. But I just don't get it. It's not that funny. It has its moments but they're not good enough to be quoted or put on t-shirts. The fact that VOTE FOR PEDRO t-shirts are sold at Cumbys should be enough to prove that that movie is awful.
sillytexasgirl's picture

Napolean Dynamite...

...was just awful. I also really disliked Crash and Babel. To me, Babel was like Crash International or something. Too many contrived storylines that were put together "seamlessly" that clumsily attempted to say that everyone's the same and everyone's life sucks.

This is my signature, not the end of my post.

Spill Jill's picture

Oooooh...nice!

I couldn't agree more. I hated "Crash." No, I take that back. I didn't just hate it. I ABHOR that movie. More than that I hate that when I tell people I hate it, they tell me I just don't get it. No, I got it...and THAT'S why I hated it.
ScottyDk's picture

hmmm, there's so many.....

Babel---I really disliked this movie and turned it off about 20 mins in
Children of Men--- it had the potential to have a good storyline but it just fell flat
The Invisible---the previews looked 100 times better than the final version
Spiderman 2&3---so disappointing
The Rings--- I thought the american ones totally ruined the story that came from the japanese one
The Grudges---same as above
The Exorcist--- I know this movie scares alot of people, and some people I know take it seriously because it deals with religion, but I found this movie wasn't all that great, it had some interesting scenes but overall I was bored.

that's it for now, it's time to sleep.....

There are plenty of course

But my number one over rated movie has to be Star Wars. I have tried a thousand times to watch it and it just produces a low buzzing sound in my head. That and Titanic. Everyone cries?? How can you possibly care about anyone in that film?? It made c-span look like Predator or something. And American Beauty...but that may just be a dislike for Kevin Spacey. Nope...I guess I really didn't like it.

Movies that didn't WOW me....

I read through the list and found some of the movies mentioned interesting. Movies that wow'd others but did nothing to me:

Rosemary's Baby - not my cup of tea.

Cinderella Man - boring, end of story.

Apocalypto - hated everything about it.

The Godfather saga - for a series so revered, I was disappointed.

Blue Velvet - the only Lynch movie I have despised.

The Pursuit of Happyness - seen one inspirational sob story, seen them all.

Good Will Hunting - didn't help that two actors I dislike, Minnie Driver and Ben Affleck were in this film.

Desert Hearts, Go Fish and Claire of the Moon - I did not enjoy any of these, I tried to like them but I didn't see what was so wonderful about any of them.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

I've never seen the movie before, but it's one of my favorite books so, yeah, I feel obligated to rant about why it's DEFINITELY not overrated. It's a moving novel that basically predicted the entire rebellion against established government in the 1960s. Not to mention that Ken Kesey was totally on drugs when he wrote it, in what may be the coolest story ever.

So Ken Kesey was in college on writing scholarship and working two jobs. In the first job he was a nightguard at an insane asylum. In the other job he was a participant in an experiment with native american drugs - before they really knew the side effects. So basically he would get high on mushrooms, then spend the night guarding an insane asylum. And One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is what came out of it.

And who doesn't think that is AWESOME?

Haven't seen this one listed

The worst movie that I ever wasted my hard earned money on that received, for some inexplicable reason, rave reviews would have to be The Crying Game

Space Odessy all the way. How the hell is this film one of the "greatest movies" ever made? AFI doesn't know their elbows from their butt.

The Godfather

Borat

The Graduate

American Beauty

Crash

I'll think of more.

AndroBard's picture

What is so great about Dicaprio?

Titantic was awful, it concentrated on the romantic relationship more than the event (although it does have Kate Winslet in it ^_~ )

Blood Diamond was boring, and so much violence and, again Leonardo DiCaprio was a bad actor in it.

Borat one of the stupidest movies I have ever seen.

Napoleon Dynamite- Can someone please explain the plot to me again?

Crash - Great cast, boring movie

Was hoping at least someone

Was hoping at least someone would say 300 or Transformers...

300 = special effects looked good but I never loved them. Plus the fighting was dull suck and the characters lacked any depth.

Transformers = good effects, everything else was fail. Not only should it have only been the bots, it should have been Beast Wars.

Also, I think Good Will Hunting was a great movie despite Ben's horrible acting. One Who Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest was brilliant to me.

tlwalsh's picture

300

Ah, good. Someone else thinks 300 was a waste of time.

Now i wasn't disappointed because of historical innacuracy or poor acting. I went in expecting some testosterone-driven stylistic flick, which is what i got. The film itself is fantastic to look at because the visuals are so stunning. They really did nail that comic book look. Unfortunately, just about everything else sucked.

Probably the worst thing about 300 was the overall message. I know the director and writers explicitly stated that they weren't trying to send out a message, that they're just trying to entertain people. Of course, whether or not that was their intent, they sent a number of messages anyway. I found the movie offensive in more ways than one. I really, really did not appreciate the "everything different is bad and the ways of Sparta are the only acceptable ways to live" message.

Maybe i'm just overreacting. Maybe i missed something important. Or maybe 300 really did just suck.

C.Juri's picture

oh no...it really did

JUST SUCK! (referring to the 300)

put me to sleep - very boring as well and i found the British accents disconcerting since they are supposed to be Spartans - didn't sound a bit Greek in vocal presentation at all (o____O)

plus i don'think over-sized men in very little clothing fighting all over the place is attractive nor exciting ;^b

Aw, I loved Transformers ..

Aw, I loved Transformers .. but it could be because it brings back some childhood memories and all. I went in looking for a very light hearted, action-filled movie with cheesy and stupidly funny dialog. I felt like I got what I was there for.
Assydingo's picture

To be fair

It wasn't a bad movie, just wasn't what I wanted. I'm not sure what Transformers you watched, they'res like a miillion different versions... but I watched Beast Wars. BW didn't have a single human and I loved it.

I serously loved that move- so many childhood memories for me. I'll knuckle up to anyone that bashes it lol
