Mai (My) Hime (Spoiler Warning) Question-Anime Fans

Hi.  I recently completed Mai Hime, and I have a question for anyone or everyone who's seen it.  It's also my new anime obsession...you can only watch S-Panic so many times.  Anyways, I've read up on Mai Hime and I enjoyed it very much, not just the yuri content.  However, like most fans, I really liked the story between Natsuki and Shizuru.  Am I the only one who is confused about what happened between them?  From what I read in the subtitles, Natsuki didn't return Shizuru's love, she loves her but not in the romatic sense.   Was that an error on the version I read?  I'm currently watching Mai Otome (already read up on it on Wikipedia) and I guess the  books say that she did or does return her feelings???  Do you know what is the answer to that?  Trust me, I was heart broken when I saw she didn't return her feelings in that way, and I was rooting for them 100 percent.  Any info would be great, appreciate it!  Thanks.

Two different seasons

Simple mix-up, Mai Hime and Otome are from the same series, just keep in mind that these two seasons are very different from each other: different plotlines, different setting, different characters and character development. It just so happens that Shizuru, Natsuki, and Nao characters are popular enough to have carried over into Mai Otome. They still have their personalities, but their histories and parts of their names have changed.

Also, if you watch closely, you'll see that some of the new characters in Mai Otome sometimes resemble those from the old characters in Mai Hime.

Oh I definitely got that

Oh I definitely got that much.  My post is very confusing so I apologize.  What I meant was in episode 25 of Hime, Natsuki says she "can't" have feelings for Shizuru..as I discovered after watching the episode again.  I read up on the series and watched it because it was getting buzz on this site and a forum I was reading the other day.

I didn't know if the translation was fubar because almost everything I read said they were in a relationship or continued to flirt with it.  Also, I am highly impatient when it comes to this kind of thing as well as a hopeless romantic as my wife puts it.  I was just wondering if I had missed something.  I'm also skeptical to watch the domestic release b/c I always find them really inaccurate with translations and sometimes they point stories in different directions.

Shizuru fangirl

I´m a Mai Hime fan, I have watched the anime, and read the manga, in the manga version, Natsuki is in love with Tate... so... is even worst, but the good thing is that Shizuru is a lesbian both in manga and anime.

In the version that I watched happens the same with Natsuki, well in my forum, we have a lot of theories of how Natsuki isn´t prepare to love bla bla bla, but I think that what happens in the anime is all, Natsuki does not love shizuru, not in the same way Shizuru loves her, but hey, don´t be sad, at least we have doujinshis..

Find Interesting

Damn that really sucks about them completely changing all of that.  Really misleading, and they do that all the time when they convert from manga to anime or Japan to the US.  Not that I mind this change though.

As for the show, I actually watched episode 25 again to catch what was said.  What I found funny was Natsuki says she "can't" love Shizuru like that.  There isn't a "don't".  I'm a hopeless romantic >_<.  I've started watching Otome as well and I could see a bit of what they were saying in the stuff I found online.  But then again, a lot of it could be people writing what the want to see.

I'd also like to say that I really like Natsuki's character, a lot in fact.  Mai was great too, but I'm drawn to characters like Natsuki, at least where anime is concerned.

Yes, she did..

Well, contrary to what's being said, Natsuki eventually did accept Shizuru's feelings for her. What irks me is that it HAD to happen OFFSCREEN!  This takes place in an official Mai Hime book which explores the characters a time past the aftermath of the anime. In it, Natsuki returned Shizuru's love for her. Futhermore, the director actually confirmed their relationship in an interview on the show. So yes, it's official they are a couple.

It's just, instead of doing all that, couldn't they have squeezed in these scenes in the final ep?

This is little off-topic, but personally I don't often relate an anime to it's manga counterpart or vice-versa. To me, these aren't called 'adaptations' for nothing. Besides, half the time from the innate protrayal of a character, the character's personality to key storylines are often changed around. Hence, I prefer to look at them as two separate entities regardless.

really????

Really??, I didn´t know this, I have read things of drama cds, but I didn´t know they really made it official, you had made me  happy this morning. (its 12:20 pm in spain) god how sad I have to hear that a cartoon couple are toguether to be happy....uffff

Yes, you did make me very

Yes, you did make me very happy as well.  And I fully agree, they could have maybe given us a line or two because it would definitely kill the confusion.  Thanks for clearing that up!

As for the manga..not off topic by the way :)--I agree.  I had to learn to do that the hard way because it would drive me a little nutty, lol.  People also get annoyed with anime "fillers" that the studios often do.  Generally speaking, for long running anime's such as Bleach and Naruto, it's easy for the series to get ahead of the manga's.  My friends get really annoyed w/ it, but like you said, you can't compare the two.  Some times the fillers are quite good and often times they aren't.

I forgot to ask, is this

I forgot to ask, is this after Hime or Otome?  I mean if it's after Hime, I read somewhere that there is an assumption they are together during Otome.

Ridercaster's picture

Yes..

Yes, you are correct. What I was mentioning about was the afterward of Hime and not Otome.

Oh no! .. My Otome is not a continuation or actual sequel of Mai Hime. It's a completely different alternate universe simply borrowing most of the cast of Hime and apparently Shizuru's and Natsuki's romance as well. ^_^  Though, a couple of jokes and references would be understandable if you had seen Hime first.

Well.. In my Otome, they come across as a lesbian adult couple, past their angsty teenage years, pretty settled and happily married. That was sorta the first impression that came to mind.

Way late in my response to

Way late in my response to this :).

I read up on some forums and it started making a lot of sense.  One of the main arguments was how long after Hime did the Otome storyline begin.

Oh I agree about ShizNat story line.  Although the director did give us some things to giggle about they didn't out right come out with it.  Vocally I mean.  I enjoyed watching them together very much.  I'm watching the OVA's now, but the 4th one was just released, I'm impatiently waiting for someone to sub it.
