A little while ago I was asked who I thought the best female musician was right now. Being the indie snob I am I said Eleanor Friedberger of the Fiery Furnaces. I've asked friends and I've gotten some interesting answers. I'm curious as to what other people think.
Hayley Williams
She's pretty young, so she's kind of overlooked, but Hayley Williams, the frontwoman for Paramore is wonderful. If you ever have the chance to catch a live show of theirs (and can stomach hearing a ring in your ears for several days) you should definitely go. She puts on one of the most energetic shows I've ever seen.

amazing
Erin Mckeown.
the woman has a degree in ethnomusicology, from an ivy league school. she can do rock, jazzy, bluesy... you name it. and she knows her way around a guitar like... well...
you should see her doing "Ring of Fire" with ferrick on tour.
Another vote for Kim Deal,

Music's Best Women
Neko Case should definitely
Neko Case should definitely be included. No one has a sound like her ... and I mean that in a good way.
Also, Tegan & Sarah's last album is really good ... I've had it on repeat for the past month.
I would also include:
Mary Chapin Carpenter (brilliant songwriter/performer - and she just changed labels)
Sarah Harmer (ditto from MCC's description, but Canadian)
Bonnie Raitt! Hello! Queen of the Guitars!
Regina Spektor - definitely.
"I could drink a case of you, and still be on my feet..."
Kim Deal or no deal
usually underrated because of all that.
No Wave!
Also: Kathleen Hanna, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush (goddesses all, but at the mo for me, "the Deal's the thing...")

Hayley Westenra
Music's Best Women
Regina Spektor and Julianna Mauriello!
Those are my favorite. Regina have a voice that I could fall in love with, refreshingly unique lyric style, and simple but enjoyable music. Not to mention she's gorgeous. Jullianna Mauriello is the girl on Lazytown. As far as upbeat music goes Lazytown is hard to beat =x.

I want her to be my mommy
uhh wait a minute
too cute, ginaji!
(i want that kitty to be my mommy, too)
Interesting
Kim Deal was always a favorite of mine. The Breeders, The Amps, The Pixies, etc. But I had NO IDEA she had such a loyal following. Interesting.
Brandi Carlile
Good choice
As I listen to more of her songs, I fall in love with her voice. "The Story" is one of my favorite songs. Also, I agree she's not bad on the eyes either.
[edit: I attempted to post
[edit: I attempted to post a reply to a different post in this thread, but it showed up as a response here. I don't know why.]
So in non-response mode, my votes go to:
Kaki King:
And another for the eye candy:
And Carina Round:
You've probably never heard of Carina Round (she's mostly produced stuff on her own label, with a brief stint on Interscope) but fans of Patti Smith or PJ Harvey owe it to themselves to check out her album "The Disconnection."
Music's Best Women
It's so difficult to answer that question becvause it changes all the time for me, so I'll give a little list of my top female musicians:
Bif Naked!
Justine Frischmann (Elastica)
Lousie Jane Wener (Sleeper)
Sharleen Spiteri (texas)
and as far as Australia is concerned i think the most talented all round female artist at the moment is Missy Higgins
Music's Best Women
Kim Deal! By so many million miles. Yoshimi P-We comes a close second!
Music's Best Women
For it's Jewel. I also love Tori Amos... and well a few others.
