Corinne Bailey RaeCorinne's song, 'Like a Star' woke me up at 3am yesterday morning and I haven't been able to get it out of my head since. Being the nerd that I am (and because her voice penetrated my psyche to the point that I was almost moved almost to tears), I immediately flipped open my laptop and Googled her for the next couple of hours. :) She's 26, from Leeds, and has the most soulful, silky and emotionally rich tone I've heard in a long, long time. She's been compared to everyone from Billie Holliday to Minnie Riperton to even Curtis Mayfield. There's just something about her that I find absolutely breathtaking. Anyway, my friend somehow managed to get tickets to her gig tomorrow night and I honestly can't wait. Here's the link to her official site where you can sample some of her songs and find out more about her: And a picture: Unfortunately, her album isn't released here in the UK until November 7, so we're going to have to wait until then to formally check her out. And as for any possible lesbian/bi interest, her lyrics are wonderfully open to personal interpretation (as are many of the best things in life, methinks :)). Came back from Corinne's gig a little while ago and I have to say ... it was absolutely amaaaazing. You look at the pictures on her site and she seems like something out of the deep south circa 1950 (with a certain childlike innocence). But in person, she was [i:b87efdb83c]unbelievably[/i:b87efdb83c] luminous and sexy. To anyone who hasn't been there, Cherry Jam is a relatively tiny club, which just added to the whole intimate atmosphere. Her performance was magnetic. And as far as I could see, every single person in the audience was spellbound. By the facial expressions and range of emotions she experiences whilst she sings - everything from deep sorrow to unmitigated joy - you could just tell that she really means and feels every single word. She has totally won me over. I can't get over how blown away I am.
From her official site:
[quote:b87efdb83c]"The response so far has been amazing," she says, "and that has been very satisfying, because all this feels right to me. Writing songs - playing music - is, I know, precisely what I should be doing with my life."[/quote:b87efdb83c]
Seriously stunning musician. I hope she blows up big time. :)

Wow, I can't wait for Corinne's album to come out, I can just tell her album is going to be the soundtrack to my spring. She was in the livelounge on the Jo Whiley show today - she did Put Your Records On and a cover of the Editors; both of which were amazing :D
To add to your comment about her lyrics being open to lesbian/bi interpretation, I agree 100%. The lyrics to Put Your Records On are fairly suggestive:
Three little birds, sat on my window.
And they told me I don't need to worry.
Summer came like cinnamon
So sweet,
Little girls double-dutch on the concrete.
Maybe sometimes, we got it wrong, but it's alright
And nothing seems to change, and it all will stay the same.
Oh, don't you hesitate.
Girl, put your records on, tell me your favourite song
You go ahead, let your hair down
Sapphire and faded jeans, I hope you get your dreams,
Just go ahead, let your hair down.
You're gonna find yourself somewhere, somehow.
Blue as the sky, sombre and lonely,
Sipping tea in the bar by the road side,
(just relax, just relax)
Don't you let those other boys fool you,
Gotta love that awful hairdo.
Maybe sometimes, we feel afraid, but it's alright
The more you stay the same, the more they seem to change.
Don't you think it's strange?
Girl, put your records on, tell me your favourite song
You go ahead, let your hair down
Sapphire and faded jeans, I hope you get your dreams,
Just go ahead, let your hair down.
You're gonna find yourself somewhere, somehow.
Just more than I could take, pity for pity's sake
Some nights kept me awake, I thought that I was stronger
When you gonna realise, that you don't even have to try any longer.
Do what you want to.
Girl, put your records on, tell me your favourite song
You go ahead, let your hair down
Sapphire and faded jeans, I hope you get your dreams,
Just go ahead, let your hair down.
Girl, put your records on, tell me your favourite song
You go ahead, let your hair down
Sapphire and faded jeans, I hope you get your dreams,
Just go ahead, let your hair down.
Oh, You're gonna find yourself somewhere, somehow
Also, i read an interview where Corinne was talking about her favourite albums and for one of them she commented that 'her lover at the time' bought it for her. Why not just say boyfriend if she's not trying to hide something? Well just a thought, it's largely irrelevent with talent like she has 8)

Edit: turns out CBR has been married for four years. Oh well the music rocks so who cares right? :D

I saw her at the Birchmere, in Virginia, this past weekend.. OMG! I totally agree with you; the audience was completely mesmerized... besides cheering, everyone was completely silent for each song... She is soulful and refreshing and sultry! I wish I could have gotten a picture.. !
Also, she has this really great song called "Young & Foolish" that isn't on her album... you should check it out if you can!
