Microsoft Surface

Myself and a few other techies here at work have been digging around and looking at this new computing concept/product being produced by Microsoft. It deals with a completely tactile interface and is presented in the form of a table whose surface is interactive.

The media presentations about it seem slick and well, stupidly cool. But do you think Microsoft will be able to deliver on all the hype?

It's retailing...

For about 10,000 to 15,000.

It was demoed earlier this year and 'seems' pretty solid. The first big roll-out is expected to hit restaurants and hotels before migrating over to homes.

Awesome!

I don't remember where I saw it but I know it was on tv and I thought that it was really cool.  And very expensive.  I love how you can just stick a camera on the table and drag out the pictures.  The guy on tv had a huge surface so I'm hoping that's just for show and that you don't need something that big.  I don't have tables with that much free space.

I totally want to try it out though.

BUGS

Whatever they deliver will probably have bugs in the software, though it would be hell of a cool to use at work, my cat would have a field day with this thing.

My only real complaint...

so far is that it only seems to support Microsoft branded accessories, like the Zune. This could protentially reek of monopolizing a new technology, which makes me sad since I'm a DIE HARD Apple fan. But would be perfectly stereotypical of Microsoft.

<cough>Ipod<cough>

Of course, Apple wouldn't know anything about proprietary architecture and monopolizing new technology.

Apple

I still cannot completely forgive Apple for how they dropped support of the Apple computers in the 80's when Macintosh came out.  My dad had purchased an Apple IIgs computer when they first came out -- A year afterwards Apple stopped making software for all Apple computers.  So that was basically $3000 down the drain.

I wish I still had that computer though.  Maybe one day I'll buy one off Ebay.

It's cool but

isn't it just like a big-screen iPhone (that's Apple)?

I have another idea. Moving objects by touching the screen can take more effort than moving a mouse, especially on such a big screen. I think the way how Tom Cruise did in the movie Minority Report is better.

It's cool but!!!!

It looks pretty cool! But doesn't anybody else feel like it's the type of software that's taking away our ability to mess around with the computer. I'm in my 4th year of Computer Science and that could be the case of my geekyness! but I remember reading about WinFS, the File System that was gonna come out with Vista (but didnt!!!). And thinking wow, the concept of files and folders as we know it will be gone. Of course new and innovating things will come and i'm a total fan for that! But I don't know I think even with Vista i miss the ability to mess around with everything.. i know that sounds really geeky of me.. But to me, Microsoft Surface looks exactly like the whole buzz with WinFS, it seemed amazing... but didnt happen!
