Religion & Science, Religion v. Science?
I read on Pharyngula yesterday a post about Senator Sam Brownback. It appears that the presidential candidate not only does not believe in evolution, but he also does not believe in heliocentrism, that the earth revolves around the sun. He believes that the earth does not revolve at all, and cites Biblical passages to that effect. It was hours before the shock of this wore off for me. Now, I am fully aware of the number of times in human history that we have been held back scientifically because of religion. I just thought that we had finally conquered the urge to drag our heels for God.
But I am also uplifted to know that there are other more positive collaborations between the faithful and researchers. There is much to be gained when we are able to understand what happens to us when we believe. I'm curious to know what else is out there. What studies have you read that join science and religion? Do you think they can work together, or will these two communities always clash?
