Out actress Cherry Jones won Best Actress in a Play at the 59th Annual Tony Awards, held at New York's Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 5. 48-year-old Jones picked up a Tony for her role as Sister Aloysius in Doubt, John Patrick Shanley's drama about suspicions of sexual abuse in a parochial school in the Bronx. Doubt took home three other Tonys last night, including Best Play.

The winner of Best Actress in a Play was considered by many to be a tight race between Jones and Kathleen Turner, who is currently starring in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. When Jones was announced as the winner, she received a kiss from girlfriend Sarah Paulson, the 29-year-old stage and screen actress currently playing Jessica Lange's daughter Laura Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie on Broadway (she previously starred in the TV series Jack and Jill and the film Down with Love).

Accepting the award, Jones thanked Paulson by saying "Laura Wingfield, I share this with you," and called Kathleen Turner "a genius" and Doubt "a great American play that is going to be performed around the world."

This is Jones's second Tony win; her first was in 1995 for the title role in The Heiress.

The 2005 Tony Awards were broadcast on CBS on Sunday evening, with Hugh Jackman hosting the event for the third straight year.
