New Music Tuesday: Debuts from Fallulah, Happy New Year, Selah Sue & More

Hello music lovers! Before I break into the new releases of the week – I want to make sure you’re aware of the Kickstarter campaign currently going on for the very lovely and very talented act, God-Des & She. They’re trying to fund their fourth full-length album and need your help getting there (if you’ve got the funds of course). They’re also putting up some really awesome prizes for supporters at specific levels. I mean, this giant tongue costume could be yours. Think of the possibilities. The campaign ends September 1st so jam on it my friends.

For the last two months, I’ve been lucky enough to have an advance copy of this fantastic debut album from this incredible Danish artist. From start to finish, the album is bursting with catchy hits that fall all over the pop map but still manage to fit neatly together. Within the first few notes of the lead track, “Only Human”, Fallulah (born Maria Apetri) immediately made me think of another great new(ish) artist, Oh Land. The Black Cat Neighbourhood is one I wouldn’t mind moving to and sounds like a fun album to see performed live.

Many of the songs on Selah Sue’s US debut aren’t new, but with a voice like hers, who even cares? The more important part is that people are listening and I have every reason to believe if you haven’t heard her before, you’ll be blown away very quickly. This girl has soul coming out of her toes and can even spit some lyrics with the syncopated rhythms of a seasoned reggaeton-professional. Take this album for a test drive and enjoy it thoroughly over at Spinner. Also, try not to step in the puddle of sex she leaves behind her in her song “Fade Away”, below.

The debut release from Happy New Year is as dark as it is delicate without ever over-doing it on the artsy. Eleanor Logan’s voice is soft and distant and has the same ghostly qualities as the vocalists from Ladytron. Logan plays with different rhythms and even brings some synths into the mix but never gets danceable. I am enjoying the music but the album as a whole seems to keep its listeners at an arms length. Stream the album in its entirety over at Spinner.

That’s it for today my loves but I hope this music will keep you happy and with warm fuzzies until we meet here again next week.
