New Music Tuesday: 5-31-2011

It’s Tuesday once again and I’m sore from painting all weekend long. One of the great things to come out of the physical labor was trying out different Pandora stations and seeing what songs come up. Highly recommended: Patti Rothberg’s station. Good times.

From the very first song, “Beautiful Machine,” Alina Simone packs a punch. This is the second full-length album for the singer/songwriter originally from the Ukraine. I had never heard of her before, but I enjoy the way she mixes Eastern European instrumentals with a voice powerful enough to break down the walls of sound surrounding her. Simone isputting out her first collection of personal essays this month as well, You Must Go and Win.

And since there isn’t any other new music from women today, I’d like to mention Kate Bush’s Director’s Cut, which came out May 16 but wasn’t on my radar. So there it is, all out in the open — sometimes I miss things.

Honorable Mentions: Eddie Vedder, My Morning Jacket, Death Cab for Cutie, The Vaccines, The Orphan The Poet, Research Turtles, Stewboss, Flogging Molly, White Denim, Jordan Knight, Depeche Mode, Sebastien Tellier and iTunes Live sessions from Agnes Obel, Handsome Furs and Best Coast.

And now, for something really special.
