New Music Tuesday: 5-17-2011

Hello everybody and happy Tuesday to you all! We’ve got some great new music coming out today and as a bonus, I can finally guarantee I’ll be back with another installment of your Weekly Women to Listen to tomorrow. As an extra added bonus, check out how beautiful Trish looked at her wedding!

It was a toss-up for the top spot this week but since I actually have the full COT album and have had the chance to appreciate every song on it, they are the winners. This is the kind of rock album I’ve been in need of lately – the kind that smacks you in the face and gets you up on your feet.

And on the other side of the spectrum, we’ve got the beautiful, dark, electric opera from Austra. While many listeners might be scared off by the genre tag of “opera”, this is not your momma’s aria. Katie Stelmanis’s voice is like a baptism of gorgeousness and the electronic aspects are perfectly placed. Truly, a fantastic album.

I am loving this album and all of its electro-disco deliciousness. It’s funny because while it has all of these great funk elements it’s also very dreamy. Her last album, My Electric Family, was enjoyable but this is a positive step up.

The debut album from Janine Rostron is emotionally gripping with layers of sounds at times classically beautiful and other times a total mind-effer. Like a carnival fun house that is scary enough to be fun – it’s not an easy album, but it is incredibly powerful.

I suppose I have a soft spot in my heart for Kate because she was one of the least annoying characters on One Tree Hill back in the day when I had to recap and podcast about the show. From what I’m hearing it sounds like a good twangy power-pop album.

Southern bluegrass with high production and absolutely gorgeous string instrumentals. While her voice and song writing aren’t exactly up to par with Patty Griffin (one of my all-time favorites), I think fans of Patty would enjoy Sarah’s music.

Slightly punk, slightly rockabilly, slightly psych-pop and wholly fun and ready to get the party started! This four-piece from San Fran sound like they’d be a great band to see at an outdoor festival. So if you see them coming this summer, try to get on it.

Honorable Mentions: Mia Doi Todd, Patti Austin, Elvin Bishop, Thurston Moore, The Go-Go’s, The Elected, Bela Fleack & The Flecktones, Ben Harper, Moby, Naughty by Nature (wow, really?!), Seether, Swimming with Dolphins, Tinie Tempah, Warrant (wow!), Matraca Berg, Glasvegas.
