New Music Tuesday: 5-10-2011

We’ve made it to another Tuesday and I am super pumped about some of the new music coming out today. I can’t lie, I’ll be giving my ears the treat of putting my top album on repeat for the next week.

The top spot today goes to Teri Gender Bender and her crew, who are hands down my new favorite band of the year. Some of you may remember how excited I was to hear the all-encompassing powerhouse sound of Le Butcherettes, particularly since they fully embrace the riot grrrl influences of my youth. This, my friends, is what great music sounds like. Thank your lucky stars you can stream the entire album over at Spinner.

First of all, Christina is a total babe. I’m a huge fan of her tats. Now that we’ve got that out of the way I can focus on her music, of which I’m also a fan. Since seeing her perform live on So You Think You Can Dance with “Jar of Hearts,” I’ve been excited to hear what else she’s got in her pocket. What we’ve got is a melodic pop album worthy of a listen.

Indie folk rock with harmonies and lots of string instruments – not much more that you could need here. Soft and dreamy, they’re another band to bring in your picnic basket.

The first half of the album has some slower, more shoe-gazey or experimental tunes that that I’m not in love with (could be my mood, though); but then she goes and totally redeems herself with the sultry, scratchy, electronic (almost PJ Harvey-channeling) song “Milkman.” Overall, it’s not a bad album, but today I’m in the mood to get punched in the face with rock.

I’d call this “challenging” music. It’s experimental, almost sci-fi in its cinematic movement. Overall I just don’t think I’m smart enough to “get it.” Perhaps some of you will do better than me, though I do enjoy their song “Adult Goth.”

Sleepy Vikings is an appropriate name for this alternative indie band from Tampa. They’ve got boy/girl harmonies that will make you crave a dark room where you can mope by yourself. Which, hey, we all have days like that.

Honorable mentions: The Antlers, The Cars, Greg Brown, Black Label Society, Christopher Cross, The Felice Brothers, Delay Trees, The Shivers, Tyler the Creator, Raphael Saadiq, Manchester Orchestra, Anthem Lights, Peter Case, Rick Ross, Sloan, The Sea and Cake, Hugo, Lee “Scratch” Perry, The Lonely Island, Urge Overkill, Okkervil River, Man Man and Wild Beasts.
