New Music Tuesday: 4-28-09

In February I told you that Missy Higgins would be appearing on fellow Aussie performer Ben Lee‘s new album, The Rebirth of Venus.

The album is in stores today, and the song Missy sings on, “I Love Pop Music,” also featuers Patience Hodgson from another great band from down under, The Grates. Lee has previously collaborated with the likes of Jenny Lewis, so I have to continue to applaud his taste in the women he works with.

Also out this week:

Nina Persson is the lead singer of The Cardigans, but she also lends her sweet voice to the trio A Camp. This album has been out overseas since January, but now Americans can enjoy the indie pop that is ’60s girl group inspired.

Fans of Neko Case and Southern women with deep voices and superb songwriting will love Samantha Crain. With the addition of her band, the Midnight Shivers, the album is Americana rock at it’s best.

Melissa Morgan could be from another time. Her voice is a throwback to old school jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald. Her version of “Is You or Is You Ain’t My Baby” is pleasing to anyone who appreciates the genre.
