The Go-Go’s get a brand new star

As we face a weekend of relentless political rhetoric from all sides (welcome to election season), let’s take time to celebrate greatness of the kind that brings people together.

The Go-Go’s, the band that awakened the woman-loving gene in many of us who admit to being alive and listening to albums in the 80s, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Thursday. Charlotte Caffey, Belinda Carlisle, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine and Jane Wiedlin smiled their way through the ceremony, which placed a star near the spot of the band’s first gig at The Masque.

In case you’re behind on your rock history, The Go-Go’s broke ground for all women rockers to follow as the first all-female rock band to write and play their own music – and to get to the top of the Billboard charts.

That number one album, Beauty and the Beat, is on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all times – and a digitally remastered and expanded version was released in May to celebrate The Go-Go’s 30th anniversary.

The Go-Go’s have always been considered lesbian icons, partly because of their all-girl music, but mostly because members of the band have never failed to speak out for their LGBT fans. AfterEllen.com has interviewed openly bisexual Wiedlin twice. Carlisle, whose money quote about The Go-Go’s lesbian experiences was, “we’ve all been there and done that,” gave The Advocate this heartfelt interview with her gay son about how his coming out affected the family.

The band wraps up its reunion tour in the next few weeks – if you have a chance to see them, I highly recommend it. You may have “We Got the Beat” in your head for a few weeks after, but better that than the voice of Rick Perry.

Join me in congratulating The Go-Go’s on 30 years and the well-deserved Walk of Fame star.
