Interview With Uh Huh Her

AE: Do you feel like it's easier to be a gay musician now as opposed to in the 1990s or the past?
LH: The '90s, I feel so old! You know, with all that stuff I've never really ever stepped back and thought about it. It's just who I am, and I think that I've been rewarded in that way because I just live my life openly and honestly. I think good things have come my way because of it.

In fact, doors have opened for me that might have not otherwise. So I never really had a rough time even in "the '90s." [laughs] I don't know, I don't really equate my career with being out.

AE: It's just not an issue for you?
LH: It just isn't. Maybe it should be and I'm oblivious.

AE: Well, now you're a spokeswoman for Olivia. Will you be playing on any of the cruises?
LH: We're going to be playing a show in Seattle. I don't know if we'll ever make it on a cruise.

CG: I won't be.

AE: You're not supposed to say that — she's the spokeswoman!
CG: I don't like the ocean.

AE: [to Hailey] You hate the ocean too, I heard today in an interview.
LH: What'd I say?

AE: That you hate the ocean! [laughs] That you like to look at it because it's beautiful, but you hate being in it.
LH: Oh I know, I'm scared s---less … but the band is totally separate. We'll play an event, but that's really my gig.

AE: Your gay cruise.
LH: Yeah.

AE: Did you guys ever consider signing to a label with more lesbians or gay artists on it?
LH: We never ruled anybody out. We just really talked to the labels that were interested in us.

AE: As far as Common Reaction goes, was there a concept behind it?
CG:
Every song is individual because we didn't have time to conceptualize it really. We weeded out the songs we thought weren't as strong.

AE: How would you describe the differences between the album and the EP besides it having more production?
LH: We had the same producer, and since he worked on the EP, he was familiar with our sound and was able to listen to our songs and say what he thought the album needed. It was great to go back to him, because he really just kind of —

CG: Polished it. It's a little more polished.

LH: And I think it's a lot more drum-heavy and guitar-heavy compared to the EP. A little less ethereal.

AE: Is there anything else you'd want people to know about the band?
LH:
I think it's important that people come and see us for the music and listen and hopefully enjoy themselves. It's about getting to know us as a band and not coming for any other reason.

AE: Has that been an issue so far for you guys?
LH: We just want people to get to know our music.

DAMN I'M GOOD, I KNEW IT!!!!!

I just sent them a message on Myspace last week saying that I think that they're going go on tour with Tegan & Sara!!!! It just seemed like that was going to happen. I read SO much and watch SO much about bands I love that I can't exactly say what it was that made me think that but anyway, I felt this one coming!

Ugh I'm going to fall into a deep depression if they do actually go on tour with T&S and I don't get to see a show. I've been following them since the beginning because I LOVE The Murmurs I was all over that shit when Leisha Hailey got back into music.

Sara: They didn't hit that shit.
Tegan: I didn't...
Sara: Say it, it's okay, it's part of the therapy.
Tegan: No it really wasn't about "hitting that shit" I really wanted to like marry the person. I was in a very desperate state.
Sara: You wanted to hit that shit and get married.
Tegan: Yeah.

Great CD...

I pre-ordered the album and got my autographed copy a few days ago and have been playing it non stop ever since.

I've been a big fan of Leisha's work when I first heard her playing in The Murmurs and then GUSH, so it was just a natural progression for me to follow her on to UH HUH HER and I'm glad I did. I also became a big fan of Camila's work after hearing her collaboration with Leisha. I've gone back and found other things that Camila's been involved with and really found myself enjoying her work.

I also had the chance to see them perform live and while the venue was (sadly) not the best place to hear them... they nonetheless really performed nicely together, and I'd like the chance to hear them again sometime, in a better setting. I hope that with more performances and more music that the crowd will become more about the music and less about Leisha being "Alice from The L Word"... which was what over half the crowd in attendance at the concert seemed to be all about. I think once people realize how good Leisha and Camila are that we'll have more UH HUH HER fans and less of the "oh my God, it's Alice" groupies in attendance.

Congratulations to UH HUH HER on their album dropping... here's hoping that the sales are huge.

Camila Grey and Clea duVall

According to the rumours, Camilla is dating Clea duVall. <- which would make sense as to why she doesn't talk about it.

www.doubleplusspecial.deviantart.com

made_up_name's picture

or maybe....

.... she feels that her private life has not baring on whether she can make good music. They are aware that ppl will be listening to them because of leisha's celebrity through the L Word but I like that they choose to focus on the music and not try and sell themselves as celebrities because of who they are dating or what TV show they are on.

I've had the album for about 2 months now (picked an advance copy in SF for some reason it was in a music shop) and i'm more and more impressed with it each time I listen. Lyrically extremely clever and refreshingly different to most other music i've heard recently. You hear new little parts each time and I actually like that all the songs sound very different from one another. Their voices work so well together.

Tam G's picture

yup

They're together, or at least were in the summer. Saw them making out. I hear that Clea sometimes mans their merch table now. Wacky.

And photos are constantly floating about with Clea, Cam, Leisha and Tegan and Sara Quin. They need to form a supergroup.

EEEEP!!!

Awesome interview. I looove Uh Huh Her, I pre-ordered the album, I just have to go pick it up from my old roommate's apartment. Leisha being in the band is the reason I started watching The L Word. And I love the end of the interview. I get what Leisha's saying. When I went to their show in Minneapolis, some drunk lumberjack(in a plaid shirt and stunk of bug spray) of woman pushed her way up to the front, and was jumping up and down screaming "I love you Alice!" and then she turned to her friend and said "What's the name of this band again?". I wanted to punch her in the throat, but she was bigger than me, so I thought better of it.

And Uh Huh Her touring with Tegan and Sara?! That might actually kill me, but I'd die happy, so that'd be okay.

Man when i heard leisha was jumping back to music I was stoked becuse (like the 90s brat i am) I loved the Mummers. There sound is of corse alot diffrent but they came at the perfict time since I started getting into the popy, indie, tech rock. I'm currently loading up on uhhuhher merch since they have the store back. Uhhuhher is quite welcome to my massive libary.

It is better to be hated for who you are than loved for what your not.

Sweet!

As someone who was introduced to Leisha and the Murmurs in the 90s...I guess I need to hit the store and get a copy!

Saw the Murmurs play live way back in my college days.  Leisha and Heather were awesome/humble in person.

Guess I'll go purchase the CD before I fly out to Chicago next week for my Bro's graduation from boot camp.  Give me something to listen to on the flight up.

Hope these ladies venture to Texas sometime in the near future!

Damn!

"AE: Are you queer, Camila? Do you identify as queer?"

What a question. Maybe I'm just having a bit of a 'hyper-English' moment, but do you not think that's a bit rude and intrusive?

aksala's picture

intrusive.

That question made me a little uncomfortable, too.

"Pessimism of the intellect must be accompanied by optimism of the will."
Angela Davis

BAS's picture

Definitely a bit odd

I think even just the second question alone, or a question like "how do you identify" wouldn't have been quite so brash but somehow the way it was phrased was like whoa!

But at the same time, I'm not terribly thrilled by her answer. I even understand if you don't want to talk about WHO you are dating but it bugs me when celebrities or psuedo-celebrities pull that. It's not as bad as the outright denial, but come on. You in a band with Leisha. Clearly homophobes already are not gonna listen to your music, so you might as well come out if you are gay, which I suspect, since straight people pretty much always say so. Or honestly, if she is straight, and trying to hide it from us, for whatever reason, that also bothers me.

Ed Would's picture

Or...

... maybe it just doesn't matter at all?
Amanda Kay! :)'s picture

no, yeah, it matters I think

It matters when it comes to a fan demographic. People want to know if its a queer event, so to speak, like if they go to see a concert if they can expect it to be like going to see Ani Difranco or something. I've written papers on this sort of thing, about artists' idenities not being released or disclosed. It adds to the chance that gays or bisexuals will just be written off as straight at one point or another, even 50 years from now. If people are just honest from the beginning, like Leisha says, perhaps good things will come of it, instead of being fearful of whatever consequences. I also don't like the idea of her being straight and keeping it secret, its like she is still trying to keep lesbians interested in her, like we won't care about her once we learn she isn't queer because there is no sexual interest anymore. This is, of course, nonsense.
Tam G's picture

hmm

Yeah, it was a weird way to word it. And who knows how much was cut out before then, but if really was asked that soon into the interview....strange. Usually if I'm interviewing a celeb and want to broach that, I'll ask them off the record if they want to talk about it or not. It's just better.

I think that journalists have the right to ask and celebs can answer or not, but as fans we want to see ourselves represented. It's okay to want to know.

And I've seen her making out with Clea DuVall. She likes girls, admitting it would be cool. I'd maybe understand if she was straight and didn't want to lose queer fans, but I know it's not the case.

aksala's picture

I know that Leisha is NOT Alice.

And THAT makes me an AWESOMe fan.  I'm just sayin'.   ;)

Anywho.  I LOVE the album.  I preordered it in like ... April. Friday I received an autographed photo of Leisha and Camila (with my name on it and everything!!) & my copy was signed as well!  I DIED!!!

Can't wait to see them live.

Great album!  I'm listening to it right now.

My only disappontment:  It doesn't have the theme song to "This Just Out" available as a bonus track.

:-)

Deffinetly

an amazing band, both live and in cd.

Their music is prolly going to change a lot as the band progresses, but that will just make it even more fun to listen too.

Can't wait for the new album. =]]

Pay if you want to go down

OK first off thanx for asking about that lyric because I was thinking the same thing, lol.

And secondly I LOVE UH HUH HER! Oh My God, I just absoultely love them.

The new video is also friggin amazing and I dont think Leisha has ever looked so fitt ;D

I hope they come and play in the UK nad soon (in Manchester please)

NittFox's picture

So not what I was expecting!

I found them on emusic.com--subscription service, and I listened to a few of the clips before downloading, and WOW.  Incredible.  Why aren't we seeing these guys blasted all over mainstream...they're better than more than half the crap that's tarted up and blown all over the place....
gato's picture

hmmmm...

After much thought I have to say this...shame on UH HUH HER for putting subliminal messages in their music. Messages like..."You will love this album for the rest of your life" and "You will only listen to this album for the rest of your life" and "All other music fails in comparison to this album" and finally..."You want ice cream"

I know.. I still haven't figured out the last one...but this is the most addicting album I have heard in years. I have had it since last Friday and it has been on ever since. And I don't mind it AT ALL. I have already started convincing friends that they need this music in their life. AND ITS WORKING!! MUAHAHAHHAHAhahhahahaaaaaa!!!

the_pressure_of_a_name's picture

Yup Yup!

Love "Oi Oi Laydee" - Can't wait for my CD to arrive, should be here in a couple of days....I love the video.  Although I don't really like when artists have animals in their vids, it's a little cruel ...meh.  That's my only negative point, but hey I guess it was a creative decision and I gotta say it does grab your attention, hope they get lots of plays on MTV.

this album is amazing.

this album is amazing. these ladies are amazing!! i've been listening to this album nonstop (especially at work)...but im still waiting for my pre-ordered cd to come :(.

this album is definitely more polished as cam said, but i really liked the ep b.c it wasn't so "polished". again they have a great selection of songs with great melodies and lyrics (their lyrics are seriously some of the best s--- i've heard in a long time...brilliant!). the synth and beats. and then they added string instruments (which made my day!!). all together made one unique and outstanding album. they should definitely be proud! congrats to cam and leisha and the boys. party hard!

oh and...uh huh her and tegan and sara...together...touring!!! *dies*...that would become one of the best nights of my life!!

you stay. i'll stay. we'll be alone.

I love Uh huh her. I had the pleasure of catching their show in LA and they rock.

So far I have enjoyed all the tracks I have listened too of their upcoming album.

they do rock.

I love Leisha. I first saw her on the LW. Oh! and I saw her in the movie all over me .I just had to know a bit more about her and thats where i read she was in the murmurs. It was like my sky opened up. i love hearing her sing. And i am also a fan of Uh HUh HeR. Camilla is very awesome as well. I love your music!!!!!

Sweeeeet.

Ah! Man, I saw them May 1st in Lawrence and it was amazing.

I’m really liking the direction their music goes, and live it’s just an entirely different—in a good way—experience.

And the headliner, Angie Mattson, was pretty awesome as well. It was a great show.

Preordered Common Reaction (already have I See Red, of course) weeks ago, and it’s already on the way!

I didn’t listen to any of it online yet. I want to be surprised.

Can't waaaaait.

agreed

i have seen them play twice and everytime i go its more about the L word then the music. I love the band, think they are talented musicians, I always have been a fan of Leisha since her murmur days sitting in my room and trying to play along with "you suck". LOl I think people should listen to the music and go for that and not just go cause she is alice on the l word. cause thats lame..

the album is amaizing too btw...

so i managed to get a used copy of common reaction 2 months ago.  i don't really know how that happened but its definitely the same one they released yesterday.

this is just like the time my step brother had mr. and mrs. smith a week before its official release.

This interview is amazing.

This interview is amazing. I do wonder slightly if Cam is interested in women or not. However I respect her decision not to answer the question, and honestly, does it matter? She's in a relationship, so it's not like we have a chance with her :P

In any case the album...I got it a few days ago in the mail along with the autographed stuff that I framed. I am unable to listen to any other music, the album is freaking amazing, the best thing I've heard. Turning on the radio depresses me because nothing compares to the soul and beauty of their music. I'm trying to get everyone in my life to listen to and buy the album. It really was worth the wait, even if I was annoyed at first about waiting for it.

:) Really I can't wait for all the other UHH related things like more interviews promoting the album, plus more contests I'm sure...I love how they are so connected to their fans. What other bands has chats with their fans and has basically a contest a month? I think that's great.

Also. Tegan & Sara AND Uh Huh Her would be the most amazing concert ever. If they go on tour together, I will pay anything to go.

I can't wait to listen to

I can't wait to listen to the album! I preordered it and I'm eagerly awaiting its arrival. I suppose it takes a bit longer to get to England, but I have patience.

Rock-Star Guide to the Galaxy with Uh Huh Her

Rhapsody's newest Rock-Star guide video is out with Uh Huh Her. It's 13 minutes of 1on1 time with band as they give a personal tour of LA.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFJ8QrrYpL8

We shot this episode in May and I was personally excited to meet Leisha and Camila and spend 2 days with them shooting their LA haunts. We also got to meet Linda Perry, the lead singer of 4 Non blondes who is a grammy nominated music producer. Her studio is amazing as you will see in the video. And btw, Leisha does really ride a scooter. Just watch the rock-doc.

Awesome record

My preorderd copy didnt work out so hot...so that was balls... but ive been listing to the record online and I love it. Definitly have to get out and buy it to suport them because they are so talented and they deserve it. I missed them both times when they came to Toronto so that was very dissapointing..if they where to do a tour with Tegan and Sara though I would probably fly across the country and go see it (litteraly rent a plane and fly to what ever city lol). Two favourite bands at the moment so that would be a mind blowing show.. as well as a very attractive show...:D

The Unicorn

I love this band and I love the song...

But I can't believe they would allow animal cruelty in their video.  It's obvious that the "Unicorn" is a miniature horse with a horn strapped or glued or sewn to its head.

Off camera that horse lives a miserable life just waiting for the next person or band to "rent" it for that day.

What we as a society put animals through for our "entertainment" is shameful.  Let's stop and think about that for a minute.
