Celesbians' Top Albums of 2008

Carrie Murphy of Panda and Angel (Favorite Album)

An Horse, Not Really Scared EP

I love these songs. The lyrics are sweet but not overly sentimental. Also, with only the two instruments, each of them feel very present when you listen to the recordings.

Margaret Cho (Top 4 Albums)

1. Amanda Palmer, Who Killed Amanda Palmer

My favorite album of the year was by far. She is devastating and great.

2. Ane Brun, Changing of the Seasons

Beautiful folky stuff from Sweden.

3. Kevin Drew, Spirit If

So huge and life-changing wall-of-sound-coming-at-you kind of music

4. Rachel Yamagata, Elephants.... Teeth Sinking Into Heart

The double album of all double albums.

Amanda Palmer (Favorite Album)

Jason Webley, The Cost of Living
Jason Webley is one of the great undiscovered songwriters and performers of our time. He tours constantly but has managed to remain under the radar for years. For fans of Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, accordion and awesomeness.

Kelly Harris of Von Iva (Top 5 Albums)

1. Hercules and Love Affair, Hercules and Love Affair

Disco as it should be done in '08 as it was in '78! Get on the treadmill and blast it!

2. Various Artists, Yes Man Soundtrack

I'm a big fan of Munchausen By Proxy. They sound a little like VonIva. Do the research!

3. She and Him, Volume One

Zooey Deschanel a little bit country, a lot of cool!

4. Cool Kids, The Bake Sale EP

Chicago kids making amazing beats. Simple and heavy with just the right amount of old school flow.

5. Crystal Stilts, Alight of Night

A nice break from over-produced boy rock! Think Joy Division B-Sides.

Sarah Bettens (Favorite Album)

The Indigo Girls, 1200 Curfews

I realize I'm not really separating myself from the herd as a lesbian choosing the Indigo Girls, but this live record is as good as it gets for me. Fantastic songs, amazing harmonies and more realness to go around than the entire current top 40 combined.

Jenn Alva of Girl in a Coma (Top 5 Albums)

1. Black Kids, Partie Traumatic

Phanie started playing "Hurricane Jane" in the van and I really dug the song. Great album.

2. Bitch, B+TEC

We toured with Bitch and the Exciting Conclusion and they're amazing. "Highway" is one of my favs.

3. Boz Boorer, Miss Pearl

Good time music. I'm a huge fan of rockabilly and you can never go wrong with a little Boz.

4. Ra Ra Riot, The Rhumb Line

Another band Phanie introduced me to. She played me "Can You Tell." Catchy song.

5. City and Colour, Bring Me Your Love

Dallas Green was the other support with us for Tegan and Sara. First thing I thought when he opened his mouth was, "Damn, that boy can sing!"

AN HORSE!!!!

hmm why am I now surprised Sara picked Rearrange Beds???

I LOVE An Horse's album and if a full release hadn't finally come out the EP is amazing enough to be on my top list with the mere 5 tracks!!

Wow I'm really gonna have to take a listen to Ra Ra Riot! cause T&S can't stop talking about it....and now Jen Alva's all over it? Crazy

Also gotta check out Amanda Palmer cause I'm pretty much a loser for not having done that already anyway

Hip-Hop

I'm probably leaning towards dubbing Fleet Foxes (Fleet Foxes) and Third (Portishead) as my top two albums of the year, but definitely had some of these albums on my Best Of list.

I'd certainly put T.I.'s Paper Trail and Lil' Wayne's Tha Carter III as my top two hip-hop albums of the year. What really puts Paper Trail on top for me was "Swagger Like Us," which is, by far, my absolute favorite single of the entire year. I mean, Kanye samples M.I.A. and T.I. brings together an all-star line-up of Ye, Weezy and Jay-Z?! So dope. And, yeah, I guess "anything with Rihanna guesting is my kind of jam" (Sara Quin, ftw!).

Kim Stolz totally nailed her analysis of  Tha Carter III. While I wish Wayne would be a little more deliberate in his rhymes, there's little doubt that he's the hottest commodity in music right now and, quite possibly, the greatest rapper alive.

I probably would've given The Cool Kids' EP more consideration on my Best Of list, but most of those tracks have been circulating for a year or more.

In a non-hip-hop aside, I've gotta admit, I didn't like Common Reaction nearly as much as everyone else seemed to....I keep wondering what I'm missing.

Sara Quin makes me swoon

"This is my morning tea music. Sometimes I imagine myself stretching or lounging in a beam of sunlight, but generally just stare in horror in my e-mail inbox and swill coffee down my throat."

Oh Sara.

 :)

Plus, yay for An Horse love!  They're the sweetest band I've ever met!

dittybop's picture

Oh, and also

Rachel Yamagata.  I heard her sing Elephants live...it was so beautiful and heartbreaking I nearly started crying.
MAliLAli's picture

ooh, music recommendations :)

i love getting to know knew bands - yeah! and by so many amazing musicians which I adore anyways. I will definitely check out Ra Ra Riot, NNCK, and Jason Webley (when Amanda Palmer says so ...).

Rachel Yamagatas voice is amazing, I love her live version of "Be be your love": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i35RTgP1GCo

GLASVEGAS!

I can't believe Michelle Paradise likes Glasvegas! I didn't even think anyone in the states has heard of Glasvegas and could even understand what they are saying! I'm from Glasgow and even I get confused about what they say half the time and I speak the way they speak!

Jules's picture

lol

totally agree with you. I'm from Inverness though so my accent isn't as strong, but yeah, i sometimes don't understand what they are saying

She & Him

I was perusing this list and was thrilled when I came upon the selections of Kelly Harris of Von Iva, as I was hoping that someone would list the terrific debut album of She & Him among their favorites... Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward together are a duo to be reckoned with. Their collaboration is definitely one of the reasons that they made my own list of best albums of the year.

Overall, I enjoyed this list (as I also enjoyed Trish Bendix's music "year in review")... as it allowed me to find some artists that I was not so familiar with.  It's also always quite interesting to read what other artists (be they singers, songwriters, actors, etc.) find interesting.

Who's your Top 5?

I feel so mainstream after reading this article. Honestly, I’ve only heard of 4 artists off this list, T.I., Lil Wayne, Rachel Yamagata, and Uh Huh Her. I think I’ll be doing some googling when I get home from work tonight!

I know we aren't celesbians, but I’m curious what your top 5 choices of 2008 are? I added an additional section for songs only simply because I tend to be a picky person. I may or may not like an entire album or I simply just like one song from that genre.

My Top 5 Albums of 2008:

1) Anberlin – New Surrender

2) Kerli – Love Is Dead

3) Josh Hoge- Everything She Was

4) Idina Menzel – I Stand

5) Joey + Rory – The Life of a Song

My Top 5 Songs of 2008:

1) Snow Patrol – Sunlight through the Flags (# 2of 3 songs hidden in the last track The Lightning Strike)

2) Jason Mraz – A Beautiful Mess

3) Chris Brown – Superhuman

4) Kevin Rudolf – Let It Rock

5) t.A.T.u. – Ne Zhaley (Don’t Be Regretful)

Ane Brun is actually from Norway

Allthough the Swedes like to brag and say she's Swedish, she's actually from Molde, Norway ;-) Check out her MySpace-page.

Great list, with both old favourites and new hot tips! 2008-albums also worth checking out:

Elbow (a thousand times better than Coldplay, in my honest opinion) - The Seldom Seen Kid

Estelle - Shine (and of course Jazmine Sullivan, as mentioned in the article)

I'm from Barcelona - Who Killed Harry Houdini? (fun Swedish indie-pop)

Lykke Li - Youth Novel (another Swede, great mix of vulnerability and catchy beats)

Marit Larsen - The Chase (Norway's absolute favourite singer/songwrite)

Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree (impressing, yet again)

Jamie Lidell - Jim (fantastic in concert, check him out if you can!)

Lizz Wright - The Orchard (amazing voice, amazing in concert!)

Ray LaMontagne - Gossip in the Grain (that voice..those lyrics..'nuff said..)

Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer (intricate, intriguing and irresistible)

Ane Brun

Thank you. I almost flipped! The Swedes have so many international acknowledged artist, so we (Norway) have to flag the few that are ours.

Tip of the day: Check out the song "Lift Me" with Ane Brun and Madrugada. The sound really fits the holiday season

God jul og godt nyttår!.

I have to admit I lost a

I have to admit I lost a bit of respect for Coldplay and their new Cd after the accusation of copying the Satriani song. And the name of the cd.. don't like it either. Ow well..

Aside from She and Him, Anthony and the Johnsons, Rachel Yamagata and Uh uh her (because of AfterEllen), I didn't know any of those artists! =O

As for my top 3 (2008):

1. In Rainbows (Radiohead)

2. Third (Portishead)

3. Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (Sigur Rós)
