Over the last few years, you probably heard all of those depressing stories about But I’m a Cheerleader star Natasha Lyonne being at death’s door due to a heroin addiction. Finally some good news: Lyonne appears to be in good health and back to working regularly again as an actor. In fact, she’s currently shooting a new film, Goyband, about a former boyband member whose only gig is playing a Kosher casino in the Catskills. It’s described as “Dirty Dancing meets My Big Fat Greek Wedding with a touch of a hip hop Fiddler on the Roof.” Hmm.
Well, in any case, Lyonne’s abundant comic skills sound like they’ll be well used–intentionally or not–in Goyband, and I’m glad to see her back in the swing of things. I loved her in Slums of Beverly Hills, but my favorite Natasha Lyonne guilty pleasure will always be the trashy Freeway II: Confessions of a Trickbaby. Just as the first Freeway film, starring Reese Witherspoon, was a modern re-telling of Little Red Riding Hood (the Big Bad Wolf was a serial killer who preyed on teen prostitutes), Freeway II is a modernized Hansel and Gretel. Only the Hansel character is a girl. And Gretel is her sociopathic lover, not her sister. You kind of have to see it to understand.
Or to believe it.
