Penelope Cruz considers setting sail with “Pirates”

Well, the Spanish did have an amazing Armada. Penelope Cruz is in talks to board ship with Johnny Depp for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

The Spanish actress just earned another Oscar nomination for hoofing it in the musical Nine with director Rob Marshall, who also happens to be helming the fourth installment of the blockbuster franchise. Previous co-stars Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom have already publically stated they do not plan to return for another voyage.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Penelope’s character would “be Sparrow’s foil and equal in many ways.” The story is based on author Tim Power’s On Stranger Tides, which involved the Fountain of Youth and dreaded pirate Blackbeard.

Johnny and Penelope have worked together already, in the 2001 drug dealer biopic Blow. But it would be fun to see her square off with Captain Jack Sparrow. Also, I think pirate duds would suit her — not to mention a sword. Or, possibly, she could just get stranded on a desert island.

The movie is slated for a May 2011 release. So, do you like the idea of Penelope swashbuckling into the series? Will you miss Keira? Also, can this one please not suck? Just a suggestion.
