Amber Heard and Leighton Meester play “Cowgirl”

Imagine Mandy Lane and Blair Waldorf as Thelma and Louise.

It’s not an easy leap, is it? But ComingSoon.net tells us that Amber Heard (All the Boys Love Mandy Lane) and Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) are on board for a new movie, Cowgirl Bandits, described as “a young Thelma & Louise.”

Pshaw.

For one thing, Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon were not exactly old geezers when they did Thelma & Louise. And everybody knows that Thelma and Louise weren’t bandits. Sure, they robbed a store, but only because Brad Pitt took their money. Let’s not change history, folks.

That said, Cowgirl Bandits might be great fun if director Jessica Manafort (who worked with Heard and Meester on The Beautiful Ordinary, aka Remember the Daze) will let go of any copycat notions. Heard and Meester are ideal candidates for a girl-buddy movie, especially playing women who are not exactly role models. And there’s this:

Happily, Cinematical speculated that Cowgirl Bandits could be the latest incarnation of a planned project called The Uncatchable Cowgirl Bandits of Nottingham, Texas, which features cowgirls who “steal from a number of branches of a bank that are threatening their community and corrupting town leaders.” Since then, Production Weekly has confirmed that indeed it is the same movie.

Naturally, the story of two women traveling together breaking the law will be compared to Thelma & Louise. But at least Cowgirl Bandits seems to be more of a Ms. Robin Hood than a remake of T&L. Sure, I’d rather see Blake Lively partnered (ahem) with Meester, but we can’t have everything.

We’ll keep you posted as we learn more about the movie.

What do you think of Heard and Meester as buddy bandits?
