It was the ultimate battle of the sexes and a gripping moment in sports. The most watched televised sports event in history was the famous tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs that added fuel to the fire of a growing feminist movement and important conversation about gender equality. King, an iconic women’s rights champion as well as legendary tennis champion, was privately struggling to come to terms with her sexuality at the time of the very public 1973 tennis match. Inevitably, this has all now become the subject of a blockbuster movie, as it rightly should be.
Battle of the Sexes will come to theaters on September 22nd, 2017. Emma Stone will play the role of Billie Jean King, while Steve Carell has been cast as her opponent, Bobby Riggs.
AfterEllen will be following this film closely, and we hope to catch up with Emma Stone to ask her what it was like to be King for…well, more than a day. A lesbian King, that is!
Looks like she got to meet her match, too, based on this photo op:
