Wow, there are a lot of movies I haven’t heard of. And at least a few I’m really looking forward to. It’s time for another poster-and-trailer extravaganza!
First, the Baby Mama poster hasn’t really been released yet, but I came across this snapshot of the actual paper object. Cute. Is it April 25 yet?
Next, Smart People, featuring the smart and adorable person named Ellen Page (yeah, and Sarah Jessica Parker, too, but I find her less smart and less adorable, and occasionally less human).
This film debuts April 11. Here’s the trailer:
I like this poster for Birds of America, partly because it has the name Lauren Graham on it, but mostly because some days I feel like a beat-up pigeon.
Here’s a summary: “A regular guy struggles with a repressive home and professional life, as well as making amends for the trouble his free-spirited brother and sister cause about town.” I’m a sucker for indie films, and this sounds quintessentially indie. Hilary Swank also has a part and a production credit, and Zoë Kravitz is in it too. It screened at Sundance, but it doesn’t look like there are any wider releases planned. I’ll be looking for the DVD.
No, this next one is not about Peggy Peabody.
An IMDb reader describes Jellyfish (actual title: Meduzot) as “Amélie meets Breaking the Waves meets Pauline at the Beach.” Wow, that really does sting. This one has a limited release in New York and Los Angeles in April.
I don’t like the cheesy taglines on this next one, but Uma Thurman and Evan Rachel Wood in the same movie? Could be good.
Here’s a summary of The Life Before Her Eyes: “A woman’s survivor’s guilt from a Columbine-like event 20 years ago causes her present-day idyllic life to fall apart.” Oh, right; this sounds familiar. And difficult. It debuts April 18. Here’s the trailer:
This next poster is both lovely and disconcerting. Elegy stars Penelope Cruz and Patricia Clarkson, which is probably all I need to know. It’s based on the novel The Dying Animal, by Philip Roth.
I feel like I want to call it Elegant instead. But it sounds pretty dark; it concerns “sexual possessiveness” between a student and teacher. Eek. It’s slated for a June release.
Finally, here’s one of the most offensive posters I’ve ever seen. And you know what’s most offensive about it? The fact that Cynthia Nixon‘s name is on it! What is she doing in this movie? I hope the poster is worse than the actual film, and by that I mean I hope the film isn’t perverted and pedophilic, because that’s the vibe I’m getting here.
The Babysitters opens May 9. I don’t think I’ll be seeing it, based on this plot summary: “A teenager turns her babysitting service into a call-girl service for married guys after fooling around with one of her customers.” Ugh. Here’s the trailer, if you dare:
