Both Amanda Peet and Angelina Jolie have new projects in the works in which they play federal agents. Peet has signed on to join the cast of the second X-Files feature, while Jolie will be starring in a film based on real-life super-spy Kathi Lynn Austin.
According to the reports I’ve read, she’ll be playing partner to another new agent, played by rapper Xzibit. Frankly, I don’t care who she’s playing, as long as they let her play with Gillian Anderson for a scene or two.
As I’ve mentioned before, I am cautiously optimistic about the return of The X-Files to the big screen. The fact that the movie is slated to be a stand-alone venture rather than a part of that messy conspiracy makes me happy. The fact that Annabeth Gish will not be joining the party as Agent Reyes makes me sad.
Throwing Angelina Jolie into the X-Files universe would be fun too, but she’s got her own fed to play. Paramount owns the rights to Kathi Lynn Austin’s life story, which includes working on contract to the U.N. Security Council and doing field work in Africa, Europe, Southeast Asia and Central America. The studio has tapped Jolie to star in the spy thriller based on Austin’s adventures.
I’d like someone to buy the rights to my life story. Seriously, I’d make a good movie. I could use the cash. And I’d like to request they sign Renee O’Connor to play me. Sorry, I got distracted there for a moment by my delusions of grandeur.
The Austin film has yet to be written, so we’ll have to wait for the end of the writers’ strike to learn more about things like plot details, shooting schedule and release dates. But I can bide my time imagining Jolie saying things like, "The name’s Austin, Kathi Lynn Austin." Hey, Paramount, can I ask a favor? I’d like a James Bond–like franchise to develop out of this, complete with Austin girls. A girl can dream.
