Well, it’s finally happening: Wonder Woman is making her big screen debut — kind of. Variety reports that The Fast and the Furious alum/former Miss Israel Gal Gadot has been cast as Diana Prince in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel, Batman vs. Superman. And apparently director Zack Snyder is really psyched about it:
Gal Gadot is an interesting choice for the role. She did a lot of her own stunts in the The Fast and the Furious flicks, was enlisted in the Israeli army for two years, and I don’t want to hear anyone say a former pageant queen can’t play Wonder Woman because Lynda Carter was Miss World USA in 1972, OK? But Gadot is definitely not an A-list mega-star like Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, who play Batman and Superman in the movie, which makes me believe her role will be pretty token. Also, technically speaking, Man of Steel sucked donkey balls and Snyder’s reputation for crafting fierce female heroes is legendarily awful. See: Watchmen and Sucker Punch, just for a start.
I know, I know. I’ve been bitching for years about how Wonder Woman hasn’t made a live-action transition to the silver screen, and here it is, happening at last, and I’m looking the gift horse in the mouth. It’s just that this particular gift horse has a history of trying to bite off my face. On the plus side, there are rumors that we’ll see other Justice League heroes in this movie, so if Snyder does eff it up, at least the effing will be displaced over multiple characters.
Sigh. It just should have been Joss Whedon, you know?
But it’s happening. For better or for worse. So gird your loins and latch on your lasso.
