Review of She Likes Girls 3

Dandelion Fall is just as beautiful, with stunning cinematography and a very keen sense of melancholy. In the film, Billie (Breeda Wool) is a street musician who gets caught up with a sexy Manhattan realtor — who basically summons Billie for late-night booty calls by flicking business cards into her open guitar case.

Billie is sweet and naïve, looking to make a deeper connection, but there’s a very profound sense of inevitability that drives the piece to its conclusion. This film’s director, Lauren Wolkstein, is one to watch for in the future.

Dandelion Fall

Finally, the collection ends with The Insomniacs, directed by Kami Chisholm. It’s one of the director’s finest efforts, as a light, pleasantly conversational drama starring the irresistible Skyler Cooper (Butch Mystique, Don’t Go) as an insomniac looking for sleep and companionship at 3 AM.

It’s a very sweet little film and a great send-off for the collection.

Insomniacs

Compared to previous installments of She Likes Girls, number three is a much better, much more consistent effort. There are no truly odd/disturbing selections like the bizarre Piper of the first collection.

These really are some of the best lesbian shorts of the year, and they’ve obviously been selected with great care.

Effectively, the collection offers a sort of sampling of this year’s fresh talent — as many short filmmakers (sadly, not all) go on to make feature-length movies. If the films here are any indication of what to expect in the coming years — then the official “lesbian movies are awful” stereotype may officially be retired — or at least, semi-retired.

Buy She Likes Girls 3 on DVD.

She Likes Girls 3

I've pre-ordered this from Wolfe (wolfevideo.com - support LGBT filmmakers!) and can't wait to get it.  I've already seen the hilarious and awesome Commitment Ceremony, and caught part of Happy Birthday on Logo, which looked really good, and am really looking forward to seeing the other shorts.

It's ME!

Well who is that nameless actress in a clutch with Skyler Cooper? It's me! Jenoa Harlow.

Thanks so much for covering this DVD. i'm so proud to be on it. And thanks to all those who have seen "The Insomniacs"  at festivals and contacted me. The support means everything.

Rock on After Ellen! I read you every day...

Jenoa

PS And yes it was dreamy working with Skyler. Sigh.

Awesome collection

This sounds like an awesome collection of shorts, I'll definitely check it out.

Hell, I would have bought it for In Twilight's Shadow alone.

Amazed....

I woke up this morning and with my daily dose of caffeine, turned on the LOGO channel and caught the last five minutes of TWILIGHTS SHADOW. Wow! I was totally amazed at the special effects in a low budget flick. I too look forward to more of this.

Long Ago

So I know that you didn't like it so much, but Long Ago is the film that is going to get me to buy this DVD. I had such a crush on Sarah Greyson when she was on Road Rules!

Wonderful...

I find myself very impressed by many of the short films that have been released over the years on DVD's like the She Like Girls collection as well as the Girls on Film, Watching You and Short Shorts collection, so I look forward to adding this latest installment to my collection of short films.

Thank you Danielle for the in depth review of this latest collection of Girls on Film.  I was happy to read the post from Jenoa Harlow as well... it is always wonderful to discover who is reading AfterEllen.  It was also nice to be able to put a name to the face, as I was quite curious who the woman with Skyler Cooper was (at first glance I was thinking.... it that Guin Turner?).

I look forward to getting my copy of Girls on Film 3 and will continue to show my support for the LGBT filmmakers by purchasing these and other short film collections.

SLG

My local Bockbuster Video actually stocked SLG2!  So I will bug them for this one for sure.

My favorite short

It's funny this review thought the Butch/Femme birthday film was among the weakest of the set.

It was my favorite (along with Insomniacs)! It is so rare that lesbian sex is talked about this frankly in film. How many times have you scene a dildo actually shown in a lesbian movie? While some of the butch/femme role playing in the film could be seen as over the top (e.g. the dinner scene), many couples will relate to the primary plot - the sexual dilemma at hand.

And if you're a Guinivere Turner fan, she helped write the film.

I need to have this

Dang.I hope the DVD will come out here:( I can't wait to watch lesbian films! And it seems that all the films is worth watching.

happy birthday

i loved that film! for one, it was really sweet and it seemed pretty realistic with the controversy over the butch/femme dynamics. i love it's message about being true to yourself. for two, umm have you seen deak evegenikos? is there even a reason to be that fine?

haha, wow, our tastes are polar opposites

First, thanks for reviewing this new collection of short films. I saw the title of your article and went out to rent the DVD before I read your review so I could make my own unbiased critique of it. If you hadn't reviewed SLG3, I probably would never have watched it.

Anyway, I was laughing as I read your review because the two films you didn't like were some of my favorites. I thought Happy Birthday was a cute little comedy. Perhaps the writing and plot weren't the best, but it kept me entertained and I really enjoyed watching it. Same goes for Long Ago, although I admit the character annoyed me just a little.

On the other hand, I kind of hated In Twilight's Shadow. I know, I know. Lesbians, vampires, action. What's not to like? Well, I just thought the writing was shaky, and the action scene sucked. And seriously, the acting... wow. It all came off as really corny and over-the-top to me. The premise of the whole thing is great, but the delivery didn't work so well.

I didn't enjoy Dandelion Fall that much either, but I definitely thought that apart from Congratulations Daisy Graham, it had the best acting and directing of this collection. The story just didn't move me.

Agree with you on the rest. The Insomniacs, Commitment Ceremony, Late and Congratulations Daisy Graham were a really decent, varied collection of lesbian short films.

And one more thing--you didn't like Piper? Really? Bizarre. I loved that one. Guess I'm just a sucker for fairy tales.

Interesting for the most part

I thought most of the short films were interesting, especially "The Insomniacs". It had potential.

I'm a sucker for these films. I believe I have more lesbian films than anyone else in the planet! lol It's sorta of an obsession.
