Review of "Love My Life"
The acting is excellent, and the characters are incredibly likable and sympathetic (save for Eri's homophobic father). While Yoshii convincingly brings Ichiko from her childish early state to a mature — though no less bubbly — young woman, Imajuku steals every scene as Eri. They share a wonderful, natural chemistry, making the couple (and their brief love scenes) quite believable. Ira Ishida is excellent as Ichiko's father, giving him a remarkably down-to-earth quality. If ever there were a hall of fame for cool dads, surely this character would deserve a spot. The film's overall aesthetic is breezy and fun, true to the original comic. The music and pacing are energetic and emotional, much like Ichiko. And visually, Love My Life feels like a mash-up between a particularly pretty music video and a serious documentary, with plenty of simple camera setups and handheld shots. The film isn't perfect. It can be saccharine enough to induce headaches. Ichiko is quite likable but begins the film with enough doe-eyed schoolgirl wonder to fill eight Sailor Moon episodes. Also, some of the dialogue is confusing, possibly because it has been translated. And the scene where a mildly infatuated Ichiko kisses a Mohawked customer at her record store feels out of place. The woman never returns to the store and it's unclear what she represents. Unfaithfulness? Rebellion? Or does she merely signal an obsession with punk hairstyles? When Ichiko confesses her indiscretion to Eri, both shrug it off as unimportant, so the entire affair seems pointless. Another subplot focuses on an awkward student who develops a crush on Take. When he later comes out to her and she accepts him, perhaps this thread redeems itself. But it exists mainly for comic relief and is a bit of a throwaway. Love My Life doesn't bring anything radically new to the table, nor does it toy with proven cinematic formulas. But everything it does, it does well. The film is simple, feel-good fun with enough semi-serious discussion to keep it from being total fluff. And as one of the brightest and happiest lesbian films in recent history, it's well worth checking out as it makes the LGBT festival rounds in the coming months. Love My Life spends a great deal of time analyzing family relationships, and the contrast between the two father-daughter relationships is significant. Ichiko's father is clearly the "good" parent, a man who is comfortable discussing intimate matters with his daughter and encourages her in all of her endeavors. Eri's father, on the other hand, is a harsh caricature, disapproving of Eri's lifestyle and her efforts to become a lawyer. No wonder Ichiko is happy and well-adjusted while Eri is unsettled and insecure.

When watching a Japanese
I'll give the movie a A- (or maybe a B+ ) .
When watching a Japanese movie, it is a guarantee of
1) Creative and stylish fashion
2) Fast paced
3)Cute girls
4)Cute girls
5) Nice cell-phones
I saw the movie about 4 months ago without subs. I watched it again a few weeks ago with English subs, and the movie was a whole lot better. Everything was good, except that I wish the storyline would go more into depth. It's a happy, lightweighted lesbian movie, just like the manga. I have to say this is the cutest movie that I've watched in all the lesbian movies I've seen so far.
Now, all I'm waiting for is a geisha lesbian movie.
wow that so cool that there
Must see
Love my Japanese films
Sometimes when i'm watching Japanese films and tv shows though, the people look so awkward in their movements. It's ever so weird.
Anyway quick note, on the start of that fanvid -
Who wakes up like that? I don't. LOL
I didn't care much for the
..
Thanks for the review.
It is true that the identity struggle that people in the closet face is an old issue, but the film did a good job of putting it in a Japanese context.
I also think it is natural for some to find the movie's themes cliché and boring, especially if you have not known the kind of society and family pressure that makes you wish you were not born in this life just because you're unconventional.

i actually watched
Like watching a trainwreck...
I'm a big fan of afterellen.com, but I've got to say that the PowerUp red carpet interview was tough to watch. Thanks for acknowledging the problem was with the planning and not the interviewer, bless her heart!
of course books are different from movies
and manga to film adaptations are as well! In the manga the mohawk girl comes back later on. You're right, in the film it almost felt as if she shouldn't have been there at all. Plus you get to see Take's boyfriend. Not that I care to see more boys in movies, buuuut while Eri was off doing stuff, Ichiko had no one but her gay best friend really. He seemed to have more importance in the manga.
I enjoyed this movie MUCH more than SpiderLilies.... SpiderLilies was trying too hard whereas Love My Life was unnassuming and fun! Although I do have to say that those chicas in both movies are flipping cuuuuute. ^_~
Pitfalls of most lesbian films
like it, not love it
I've seen this film, but thought the acting was just awefull. Especially by the lead girl... But the story is cute, and I still enjoyed it;) Thanks for the review!

Cuuute movie!! =}
I liked how it was pretty light when it came to the drama. No deaths or murders = loverly. There were many scenes that made me smile all goofy-like, and I'm not complaining. But the part where Ichiko was translating the erotic novel was..weird. Lol.
<3
Read the manga
Hikari Ken love
I havn't seen the movie yet, i'm wondering if i should or not- it seems like a low key japanese film, and that type tends to put me to sleep. For instance the singer of the music in the video is Hikari Ken and the song name is Hitomi wo Tojite (I Close My Eyes). The song was originally the theme song for this movie called Crying Out Love in the Center of the earth (在世界的中心呼唤爱)...and it bored me to tears.
If it wasn't for my japanese friend and about $100 of sushi i would have tapped out and gave into the comforting embrace of a great japanese movie induced sleep
Such a cute movie
Enjoyable film (:
Feels good
I liked this movie because it made me feel good.
It's simple, it does not try to make me think about that subject over and over and over again, and it tells a sweet little story.
A little unbelievable (gay dad, gay mom, gay best-friend? what are the odds?), but fun to watch.
Sometimes I do preffer to watch this little fairy tale than some heavy, sad, veracious movie... Just to feel good! =]
Just so so
The camera movement is too slow. The acting is not very good. I couldn't find much chemistry between the two actresses. Not to mention the love sex scenes are completely lack of passion.
Everything being said, I like the first segment with interesting twists.
Great "Feel-good" movie!
I really liked this movie, no, actually: *LOVED* it!! :D Such a cute, lesbian, "feel-good" movie! I have only seen it without subtitles, but having studied Japanese for more than 3 years, I could understand most of it *lol* Anyway, I would LOVE to buy a copy of this movie, and was wondering if anyone here know where it might be sold? I tried the various amazon's yesterday, with no luck! I would def. prefer to buy a DVD with sub's though. Anyone know where this might be found?
Thanks! :o)
By the way..
Regions
Well Japan are Region 2 like us in Europe.
But I would wait a bit for a DVD, its not been out long has it?
Such a nice film. =) I
Such a nice film. =) I really like japanese movies. Specially this kind. Ichiko's so funny! <3
Just when you thought it's over. You're in for the worst part..
Interview with Love My Life writer, Yamaji Ebine!
There is an interview with Yamaji Ebine - the woman who wrote Love My Life - on Tokyowrestling.com . She has actually released a lot of lesbian-themed manga and talks about that element of her work and life in the interview.
Tokyo Wrestling is also a neat place to pick up info on queer culture in Japan (^o^)v
