Queering the 2013 Oscars

This year’s Oscar nominees are pretty straight, especially compared to the last few years where we had a strong showing with The Kids Are Alright, Pariah and Albert Nobbs. Fear not – we’ve got a way to keep it gay when you watch the ceremony this Sunday, at least as far as the women go. Nominated for: Best Actress, Zero Dark Thirty Queer Quotient: Before she was the hottest new actress in Hollywood, Jessica starred in the indie Jolene where she has a lesbian relationship with Frances Fisher. She also posed for a sensual photo with Kat Dennings in W magazine once. Nominated for: Best Actress, Silver Linings Playbook Queer Quotient: JLaw once told The New York Times her mom thought she was gay because she loved painting portraits of naked women. She has yet to play gay yet, but so far her character choices in The Hunger Games and Winter’s Bone give us an indication she’d be up for just about anything. Nominated for: Best Actress, The Impossible Queer Quotient: Played gay in the David Lynch thriller Mulholland Drive, resulting in a very hot sex scene with Laura Harring.

Nominated for: Best Actress, Amour Queer Quotient: In the 1961 Leon Morin, Priest, Emmanuelle has a crush on a female co-worker and talks rather explicitly about her, uh, alone time. Nominated for: Best Supporting Actress, The Master Queer Quotient: Her kiss with Lauren German in Standing Still was followed by some more girl-on-girl in the less enjoyable Cruel Intentions 2, which she said was not so thrilling to her. Nominated for: Best Supporting Actress, Les Miserables Queer Quotient: We’re still waiting for her to play Kurt’s lesbian aunt on Glee, but in the meantime, she’s a great ally with a gay brother and a very lesbian haircut.

Nominated for: Best Supporting Actress, Lincoln Queer Quotient: An ally with a gay son, it’s hard to believe Sally has never played a lesbian character. However there was a very funny episode of Brothers & Sisters where her kids wondered if Sally’s character Nora just might be interested in women. Nominated for: Best Supporting Actress, The Sessions Queer Quotient: Rampant lesbian rumors have followed Helen throughout her career, which could be why she’s stayed away from gay roles. Nominated for: Best Supporting Actress, Silver Linings Playbook Queer Quotient: The Aussie actress played what she refers to as “the big dyke” in Priscilla Queen of the Desert. She was also in a very controversial documentary about sexuality called The Naked Bunyip.

Nominated for: Best Documentary Short, Mondays at Racine Queer Quotient: Cynthia was the director of Freeheld, the Oscar-winning documentary about Laurel Hester and Stacie Andree that is being adapated into a feature film starring Ellen Page. Nominated for: Best Picture, Argo Queer Quotient: Outside of her private life, Clea has played several queer roles, including Graham in But I’m a Cheerleader and, most recently, Wendy in American Horror Story: Asylum. Nominated for: Best Animated Feature Film, Wreck-it Ralph Queer Quotient: Besides the fact she’s out and proud and just plain Jane Lynch, she played a hilarious lesbian dog wrangler in Best in Show.

Nominated for: Best Picture, Les Miserables Queer Quotient: The actress we first met in Mean Girls played a prostitute obsessed with Julianne Moore in Chloe. She also shared a kiss with Megan Fox in Jennifer’s Body. Nominated for: Best Picture, Les Miserables Queer Quotient: Before filming Les Mis together, Samantha (Eponine) sang “Take Me Or Leave Me,” the lesbian duet from RENT, with co-star Anne Hathaway in an attempt to bond on set. Samantha said it made them feel so much more comfortable with each other. There’s also the fact she dresses in drag in the film, binding her boobs and all. Nominated for: Best Picture, Django Unchained Queer Quotient: Kerry played a lesbian business woman with babies on the brain in She Hate Me and says she dreams of playing Dusty Springfield‘s lover if Kristin Chenoweth plays the bisexual leading role. We’re still hoping for someone to finance that film.
