America’s Next Top Model: All Stars premieres tonight, which means I need to find it on DVR pronto. Watch this great behind-the-scenes video, featuring out model Kayla saying things that’d we want to say but other girls are too scared to — like calling Bianca (“I didn’t steal Kim Stolz‘s granola bar”) a bitch.
The New York Times has a great video interview with Glenn Close about her new gender-bending role in Albert Nobbs. She also told The Montreal Gazette she doesn’t think this role will make her a lesbian icon because she thought she already was one!
I thought I already was a lesbian icon. Remember, I played (gay armed forces Colonel) Margarethe Cammermeyer (in a 1995 TV movie).
We did not forget!
Melissa Febos is a lesbian dominatrix who took her girlfriend and her things and moved to a small town in New York. She writes at Salon about how she misjudged her neighbors, thinking they’d be the ones judging her.
If you live in NYC, check out “Lesbians Seeing Lesbians: Building Community in Early Feminist Photography” at the Leslie/Lohman Gallery and feel my jealousy coming toward you from the west coast.
What’s Beth Ditto‘s favorite thing to do in New York? “Sit and eat.” A woman after my own heart!
Speaking of The Gossip, I saw drummer Hannah Blilie out last night and she told me the band is gearing up for their Australian tour after recording their new album in London for the last four months. We can expect a new album sometime this winter. Yay!
Out UK X-Factor contestant Samantha Brookes said she was going to keep her girlfriend’s name a secret, but her gf just can’t help but brag about her! Sam’s gf is named Sinead Murphy and she told The Sun:
I love Sami so much. She calls me her rock but she is mine. She has an amazing voice and she’s growing in confidence by the minute. I am the only person in the world she loves more than Louis Walsh!
See — that’s why she was flirting with Louis, guys. She platonically crushes on him!
Samantha Ronson DJed at her twin sister Charlotte‘s fashion show this week, per usual, and she played a mix of “Slash, Meat Puppets, Soundgarden, Arcade Fire, and their brother, Mark Ronson.” She also played one of her band’s own songs.
Archie Panjabi spoke with The New York Times about her background as an actress and how she got her role on The Good Wife. I enjoyed this tidbit about how she gets recognized on the street:
The character of Kalinda always brings a spark to people’s eyes. She excites intellectuals and non-intellectuals alike, which I love. I find people wanting to hug me and touch me.
So she’s saying it’s OK to grope her? Or just hug? I need to know in case I ever see her on the street and embarrass myself.
Carrie Brownstein recommends some of her favorite places to go in Portland’s Hollywood District in the new Finder magazine. In related news, I’m going to be doing a Portlandia set visit tomorrow! Any questions for Carrie or Fred? Holler at me!
Over at the Star-Observer, Monique Schafter writes about the appeal of androgyny.
I’d like to think we queers are trendsetters. Pop stars like Janelle Monae and La Roux are held up as “style icons” – when really they’re just sporting the same quiffs and bow ties we lezzos have been wearing for years! Just as the rise of the ‘metrosexual’ was simply straight men ripping off the personal grooming tips second nature to gay guys. Am I right?
You are correct!
