Morning Brew – Wednesday, May 25: Another lesbian wedding on TV, Brandi Carlile’s new animated video for “The Story”

Happy Hump Day!

If you are a fan of Joey Lawrence, I have something that might change your mind. In an interview about the second season of ABC Family’s Melissa & Joey, Joey and his co-star Melissa Joan Hart discussed an upcoming storyline with a lesbian wedding. Melissa said it was one of her favorite episodes, with Leslie Grossman coming on to play her lesbian cousin who gets married at her house. And here’s what Joey said:

A couple of hot lesbians, which is always good for a cable show. I didn`t want the wedding until they walked in the door.

Wow, well good thing Joey doesn’t get final approval. This makes the episode a little bittersweet. I’m glad to hear it’s happening, but now we know how Joey Lawrence really feels about it. He wins the title of d-bag of the day.

Did you watch the finale of Biggest Loser last night? It was Jillian Michaels’ last one ever, but viewers met next season’s new trainer: Anna Kournikova. Rumor has it that Cara Castronuova and Brett Hoebel might not be returning, which means it’s going to be a very different show. At least Bob’s still sticking around — that we know of. Here’s Jillian’s exit interview from last night., in which she discusses her future plans and adoption process.

Brandi Carlile has released a new animated video for her live recording of “The Story.” Sad but beautifully done.

Behind Closed Doors, a new book about The Duchess of Windsor, touches briefly on lesbian rumors that surrounded her. They were based largely, though, on the fact that she was married to a gay man.

If you’re looking for fiction, try Goldie Goldbloom’s The Paperback Shoe. The Washington Post writes:

The narrator, Gin Boyle, takes something from Cinderella, Hester Prynne and Ibsen’s Nora yet is wholly original.

The Post also says Goldie is “a 46-year-old Hasidic Jew and lesbian from Australia [who] now lives in Chicago with her eight children.” Eight? Eight!

The National Center for Lesbian Rights held their 34th Annual Celebration in San Francisco last Saturday. They gave awards to Chely Wright and her father, fired Belmont University coach Lisa Howe, NCLR founder and retired San Francisco Superior Court Judge Donna Hitchens and Kye Allums, the first openly transgender Division I basketball player. Howe said of the honor:

It’s a privilege to be recognized with this honor from NCLR, which has provided me with a tremendous amount of guidance and support over the last six months. They have literally been at my side, helping me through this process and coaching me through media interviews. One of the most memorable experiences was a conference call I had with them the morning before I gave my first interview. Without saying it directly, the tone of that phone call made me understand how influential I suddenly was, and how many people of all ages in all parts of the country were depending on me to represent the LGBT community.

Congrats to all the honorees!

Anne Lister may be dead, but she’s having the best year ever! Her diaries have won yet another award — this time, it’s the Heritage Award from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. Dang, I need to start keeping a diary, although it’d be much less salacious than Anne’s.

Kristin Bauer did an interview with SFX in which she gave us some insight to Pam’s storylines on the new season (starting June 26!!) Here’s what she said:

…Eric is in serious trouble and we get to see how that affects Pam. Does she advise him? Is she just a follower? How much are they peers at this point? Does Pam have an Achilles Heel? We find out what she does and it’s fascinating. How strong is she? That’s the question. So this season we find out much more abut Pam and she’s really tested.

But will she have a romance with Nan? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Ellen recently stayed in the Playboy suite in Vegas. She gives us a tour of the sexy room, complete with mirrors on the ceiling.

If you’ve always wanted to start a band but haven’t learned how to play an instrument (or play it well), perhaps you should check out Queer Rock Camp.
