Morning Brew – Tuesday, Nov. 1: Karey Dornetto channels Patti Smith in “Out,” Sia and Kate Pierson team up for an album

Good morning! It’s November, which means it’s basically Christmas. I hope you’re ready!

Remember when I told you about the lesbians who were crowned Homecoming King and Queen of their high school? The school is getting a lot of hate mail and angry phone calls, but the superintendent, Bill Kowba, both “supports and congratulates” the teens, saying those people are “demonstrating such a lack of tolerance and are presenting such a negative role model for children with their hateful comments. I look forward to the day when all students can come to school, free of harassment and bullying.” We need more superintendents like him.

Who would play a young Jane Lynch? On Glee, it’s Colby Minifie, who will play Sue Sylvester in high school for a flashback episode detailing why Sue hates musical theater. TV Guide has the first look at a young Sue in Oklahoma.

If you love The Slope as much as I do (which you can’t, because I’m the #1 fan), you should visit their Kickstarter page and kick in whatever you can to help fund Season 2.

Sia tweeted that she’s working with another amazing out musician on her new album. That would be none other than Kate Pierson of The B-52s. This is going to be nothing short of awesome.

The Telegraph interviewed Jeanette Winterson about her upcoming memoir, Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?, which I cannot wait to read, despite the fact it sounds kind of depressing. Since Oranges are the Only Fruit was based on Jeanette’s actual upbringing, there are a lot of parallels.

Ms. magazine is celebrating 40 years in print and New York Magazine has a fabulous oral history commemorating its early days. An editor notes that everyone had a crush on Gloria Steinem and another discusses their controversial feature, a letter that was titled “We Have Had Abortions” that was signed by several public figures, including Susan Sontag and Billie Jean King.

Diamonstein-Spielvogel: The person who created the greatest stir and the most international phone calls was Billie Jean King.

Pogrebin: She was assumed to be gay, so how could she possibly have gotten pregnant? People forgot that she was married for several years. Also many people stupidly assume that lesbians don’t care about any issues other than their own rights.

Gloria also talks about their first lesbian article.

Steinem: Clay and many magazine people told me not to include a lesbian article in the first issue-and so, of course, we did.

And that’s why we all have a crush on her.

Out has leaked a few of its Out 100 honorees and on the list so far are TV writer/comedian Karey Dornetto, actress Geri Jewell and director CĂ©line Sciamma. All great choices! I wonder if any made the cover. p.s. Karey looks super hot as Patti Smith.

Did you love Kristin Wiig’s Australian roommate with the Mexican drinking worm tattoo in Bridesmaids? Her name is Rebel Wilson and she plays the bride-to-be’s sister who pretends to be a lesbian to infuriate her father in a new Hangover-esque comedy called A Few Best Men. She’s only a small part of the film, but she stole the show in Bridesmaids, so I have no doubt she’ll do the same in this flick.
