Morning Brew – Tuesday, Feb. 8: First look at Adam & Fiona on “Degrassi,” details on Gaga’s gender-bending “Born This Way” video

Hi guys and dolls!

The Daily Bruin ran a piece about the Art of Motion Picture Costume Design exhibition in Los Angeles and talked with The Kids Are All Right stylist, Mary Claire Hannan, about her work on the film. The writer relays Hanna’s mindset in styling a film without thinking about it like a “lesbian movie.” From the story:

Hannan kept in mind the underlying meanings in each detail, from the dirty Pumas the character Laser wears to the Free City T-shirt worn by Julianne Moore’s character, Jules.

“Free City … is owned by a lesbian woman … (and) is a very strong item for lesbian women,” Hannan said. “If you were a gay woman, you’d know. But if you’re not, you’d just say, ‘Oh, she looks cute.’ And that was the point.”

Free City is owned by Leisha Hailey‘s partner, in fact: Nina Garduno. That’s why you saw so many FC shirts on The L Word.

Mieke Buchan is basically on a press tour to say she’s not dating Martina Navratilova after paparazzi started rumors about a dinner they shared the other night. She told Aussie radio show The Hot Breakfast:

Am I having a secret relationship with Martina Navratilova? No I’m absolutely not. She has a girlfriend who’s an ex Russian Miss Universe with two kids. You know what I think is actually a shame about a story like this? I actually do have some fantastic lesbian mates and a lot of them have really struggled with coming out and talking about their sexuality. They’re trying to make it sound like some secret clandestine thing. Young kids really struggle with this stuff all the time and it’s because of stories like this. This is the beat up of all beat ups.

But wait — there’s more.

She’s a phenomenal individual. She has busted barriers. She is the Beatles of lesbians. but again, no, there is no relationship with Martina. There are countless teenagers who are petrified of coming out, in case their family and friends don’t accept them for who they are. In this case, I’ve been falsely ‘outed’ for kissing a female friend, who just happens to be gay, goodbye. Which makes me even more protective and supportive of my friends who’ve had to manage the challenges of being out and gay. A dear friend has tried to commit suicide, multiple times, because their family rejected them after they came out. For them, and other people like them, I’m happy to take a few knocks on this topic. Being gay is not a disease. And its nothing to be ashamed of. 10% of people in the Australian population are gay. Someone you know is. Why marginalise and discriminate against anyone that you know. One day it could be your brother, your sister, your child.

OK, so not gay, but a really well-spoken ally. We’ll take it!

Nicol Paone does a great Arianna Huffington. Check her out on The Damiana Files.

Doesn’t she look great in that suit jacket?

Degrassi is starting back up next week, and there is a new kind of relationship on the show. FTM teen Adam will be entering in a relationship with Fiona, a student we’ve known as straight up until now. But some previews hinted that Fiona might be using Adam as a gateway to becoming a lesbian, as if she’s really interested in dating women, and that doesn’t include Adam. We’ll have to wait and see, but, until then, here’s a few images from the season.

And, just so you know, we will be covering the relationship/show on AfterEllen.com.

Blaine Morris (aka Betty on Skins) talked with PopEater.com about the show’s controversy and playing a lesbian.

An excerpt:

You play a lesbian. Have you started getting letters from lesbians asking you out?
Of course. There are silly tweets like that, nothing I’m scared of.

I didn’t mean scary. I just meant girls who have crushes on you?
Yeah, it’s nice, I actually think. I’m glad that they identify with the show. It means I did my job well.

You can become a gay icon.
[Laughs] I guess.

Are you crushing on Blaine? She ain’t neva scared.

If you want to see a video of Natajah ‘Tajah’ Burton discussing her sexual relationship with a pop star that is a thinly veiled description of Rhianna, RadarOnline.com has you covered. Tajah said she doesn’t think that this “pop star” isn’t necessarily a lesbian, but possibly struggling with her sexuality:

I’m not going to say that she’s a lesbian. I’m not trying to force her to come out or anyone in my book, but I am bringing this to the forefront because it needs to be discussed.

For the record, her book is called Low Down Dirty Shame.

Did you watch The Chicago Code last night? I live in the Windy City so I basically had to. I loved it, although I can’t help but hope Teresa Colvin is a lesbian. Unfortunately, Jennifer Beals insists on ruining my dream. She told Zap2it.com:

Playing Bette Porter, somebody who was so driven and single minded sometimes and very strong and righteous at times, certainly helped prepare me for this role. Definitely, Teresa is much more physically confident than Bette is, and, as far as I can tell so far, is deeply heterosexual.

These dreams fade when I close my eyes.

I was already interested in seeing the “Born This Way” video from Lady Gaga, but now I’m pretty much salivating in anticipation. The shoot’s stylist Nicola Formichetti gave a hint at what we’ll see:

She approaches herself as Gaga in the gender bending video and there are references to Jo Calderone, the male model she portrayed in the September issue of Vogue Hommes Japan.

Is it Friday yet?
