Morning Brew: Tuesday, Dec. 8

Hello lesbians!

Despite having previously laughed off lesbian rumors, Rihanna is now saying she’s not closed off to dating women. “All humans are born with the ability to be attracted to both sexes,” the singer said. “I could see myself in a relationship with a girl.” What a coincidence — I bet so many girls could see themselves in a relationship with Rihanna. She also noted she’d love to play a lesbian assassin in a film with Megan Fox as her lover. Casting directors, take heed!

Lesbian author Sarah Schulman talked to Publisher’s Weekly about her new book, Ties that Bind: Familial Homophobia and its Consequences. She noted that, despite the success of the book, there’s been a “blackout” from the mainstream press and that PW was the first “straight” publication to want to talk about the book. Strangely enough, the book is just as much about straight people as it is about non-straight people, hence the “homophobia” in the title.

Out model Lola Van Vorst was hanging out with openly gay friend, model/musician Christian Love, when someone punched in her window to hit her friend. Lola said of the incident: “Homophobic bastard! I’m fine but it’s just my 2 friends with the black eye — men and their egos.” He probably assumed Lola was straight because she’s “too pretty” to be a lesbian. That’s the problem: When guys are too pretty, everyone knows they’re gay. Queer people: So good looking, it can hurt.

Hugh Grant doesn’t like to watch his own movies because he thinks he looks like a “withered old lesbian.” Yikes, I’d hate to be a withered old lesbian who looked in the mirror and sees Hugh Grant’s likeness.

Want some reading suggestions from some of your favorite authors? The blog Band of Thebes asked the likes of Stacyann Chin, Diana Souhami, Ali Liebegott and Ariel Schrag for their favorite reads of the year. It’s a well-read gay lady’s dream.

Set your DVRs tonight for Rachel Maddow on Jimmy Fallon and Jane Lynch on Lopez Tonight. (Thanks @janelynchfan.) Also, it’s The Biggest Loser finale on NBC, but no one is gay on that show, right?

Speaking of lesbianish TV, Maeve Quinlan is in the Lifetime movie A Boyfriend for Christmas tomorrow night. Who doesn’t love FaLaLaLaLifetime? Lesbians are Lifetime’s greatest untapped resource. Next year: A Girlfriend for Christmas, yeah?

Congrats to Malinda Lo for her novel, Ash, being a finalist for the William C. Morris YA Debut Award. The award is granted by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association and “signifies the best of the best in Young Adult literature.” I may be a little biased, but I think Ash is the best of the best by the best ex-AfterEllen.com managing editor ever.

Ellen and Portia are hosting a charity auction for Farm Sanctuary where you can bid on some pretty amazing prizes: Lunch with Daniela Sea, two VIP tickets to The Ellen Show, signed jacket from The Indigo Girls, and tickets to any Joan Jett and the Blackhearts show plus meet-and-greet with Joan for four people. You have until Dec. 15 to outbid other DINKs (Double Income No Kids) vying for the hot prizes. Noticeably absent: No hang-out day with Portia on the movie set of Arrested Development. That’d be worth an entire year’s salary!

Lastly, tomorrow night is Barbara Walters’ Most Fascinating People of 2009, and a preview of her conversation with Lady Gaga on The View today showed Babs asking about her bisexuality. Gaga said she has never been in a relationship with a woman and gets a bit flustered about being asked about if she’s had sex with a woman. We’ll have to tune in to see the full answer.

Have a great day.
