Morning Brew – Tues. June 25: Rosie talks about Ellen’s coming out, Beth Ditto sings with Blondie

Good morning!

A legendary lesbian bar in London is being celebrated during Gay Pride in the UK. The Gateways was opened from the 1930s until the 1980s. This piece in The Guardian celebrates its history.

In case you need this for your own Dyke March coming up: “How to survive a lesbian protest march.”

Rolling Stone recently interviewed Michelle Chamuel about dressing “sexier,” fake hair and not wearing contacts while on The Voice.

Toronto comedian Guy Earle has to pay Lorna Pardy for the lesbian slurs he used about her during a 2007 routine while she was in the audience.

Lady Gaga has come out of temporary Twitter retirement to tweet this:

Are you watching Mistresses because you like it or because you hate it? I love its soapy campiness either way.

Rosie O’Donnell went on Alec Baldwin‘s podcast to talk about all kinds of things, including not being out on TV in the beginning. A quote:

…people knew is what I thought, right, but I remember like when Ellen called me up and said, “I’m gonna have my character, Ellen Morgan, come out as a lesbian on my TV show.” And I remember thinking, “Why the hell is she doing this? She’s gonna ruin her entire career and her life.” It was such a foreign concept. This is pre-Will and Grace. No one had ever even considered it. The only people who were out were rock stars. There was no actor or actress or comedian who was out.

I remember thinking even Charles Nelson Reilly wasn’t out. I mean the absurdly gay-ish people. I remember thinking she’s making a huge mistake. And then there was that tremendous amount of fallout that happened afterwards. I was like it pained me for her, it really did. Now in hindsight, oh my God, the courage that it took for her to do that at the time she did it in the way she did it was pretty unbelievable. I did not possess that.

And that’s why we are not called AfterRosie.

Siri Anderson‘s documentary about Kathleen Hanna has been picked up by Sundance Selects. The Punk Singer will be available for us all in fall 2013.

A show called The Returned had a pretty hot flashback scene this week that might just make me want to track it down. “Julie and policewoman Laure kiss while dressed as Catwoman and Batman,” according to a recap.

Angel Haze shared a verse from a song that got cut by her label and it was set to Lana del Ray‘s cover of “Blue Velvet.” It’s super lez.

Beth Ditto is on the new Blondie track, “A Rose By Any Other Name.”

If you’re a fan of the web series Entangled with You, they’ve been releasing some behind-the-scenes videos while making their new episodes.

Meanwhile, here’s episode two of Louisine: Lesbian Matchmaker to the Straights.

AE reader southafricangirl sent us this great tip. Out Dutch field hockey captain Maartje Paumen was named best player in the world.
