Morning Brew – Thursday, Nov. 3: Ellen on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Sam Ronson makes Mindy Kaling a playlist

Morning! I like Thursdays. They are so close to Friday!

A couple in St. Petersburg, Florida say they were discriminated against at the DMV when they tried to acquire new driver’s licenses with their new hyphened surname.

Ridiculous! If you can change your last name everywhere else, why should your ID be any different? That couple is way too cute. I am sorry they had to deal with that BS.

I have a mad crush on Alison Mosshart of The Kills, so when I glimpsed her in drag for her the band’s new video, “Baby Says,” my heart stopped. Unfortunately she’s only a tiny bit of the video, but the whole thing is super gay.

Want a Pretty Little Liars spoiler involving Maya and Emily’s mom? (It’s not what you might think, pervs.)

Our own Heather Aimee O’Neill penned a poetry collection! It’s called Memory Future and she talked with Burrow Press about how inspired she has always been by Jeanette Winterson.

I began reading Jeanette Winterson when I was in high school. She changed me as a person and as a writer. It was one of the first times I read queer women characters. That alone was a transformative experience for me. It made me feel less alone in the world. I was also amazed by Winterson’s imagination and ability to keep her language so lyrical and tight. I still remember sitting in my room and thinking, “I want to write like this!” As it turns out, I don’t really write like Winterson, but I’m still inspired by her storytelling and use of language.

Congrats Heather!

Samantha Ronson attended pal Mindy Kaling’s book launch party in New York this week and even made a playlist for her called “You’re Hanging Out With Mandy.” I love that she included a tune by Subtle Sexuality.

The latest lady to join True Blood is Lucy Griffiths, who will play Eric’s sister. I wonder if she’ll flirt with Pam.

Rihanna released some new promo photos for her new album Talk That Talk. How are you feeling about this one?

AE reader Vanessa tipped us off to this new webcomic called Jesus Loves Lesbians, Too from Maria Burnham. It’s really well done and both poignant and hilarious. Here’s a panel to get you going.

Ellen DeGeneres was on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night. You can watch the whole episode at ABC.com, but I’ve included a clip to entice you.
