The Grammy nominations were announced yesterday and gay women didn’t make too poor a showing. Congratulations are in order to Tegan and Sara (Best Long Form Video, “Get Along”), Rachel Maddow (Best Spoken Word Album, Drift), Ellen DeGeneres (Best Spoken Word Album, Seriously…I’m Kidding), Joan Osborne (Best Blues Album, Bring it On Home) and Sia (Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, “Wild Ones.”) I really can’t wait to watch now! February 10 is too far away.
One of the best books of the year, The Miseducation of Cameron Post by e.m. danforth, is a finalist for the 2013 William C. Morris Award. Congrats to the out author!
Yesterday The Hollywood Reporter hosted a Women in Hollywood Breakfast and Sarah Paulson was among the guests. It’s so wild to watch her look like a mental patient on American Horror Story: Asylum every week and then see her looking all dolled up IRL.
Ugandan lesbian Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera is speaking out about the horrid Kill the Gays Bill in her home country. If this bill passes, she can be murdered just for being herself.
In 1979, Chirlane McCray wrote a groundbreaking piece for Essence magazine called “I Am a Lesbian.” Interestingly, she’s since married Public Advocate Bill de Blasio. Politicker.com profiled her lesbian advocacy and received this statement from her:
In the 1970ÔÇ?s, I identified as a lesbian and wrote about it. In 1991, I met the love of my life, married him.
Well alright then! It’s worth mentioning that she’s still an advocate for equality and wrote a piece about gay marriage (along with her husband) for Go magazine last year.
Yesterday I posted a piece in response to an essay June Thomas wrote about why she doesn’t want to be a wife. She discussed the same topic on the Slate Podcast this week, so give it a listen if it’s piqued your interest.
The Atlantic has a piece on women who live as men in the Balkans. They’re called “Sworn Virgins” and they choose a life of celibacy “in order to avoid the oppressive laws of the Kanun, which forbids them from everything from voting and doing business to swearing and drinking.” So basically they can’t have any fun.
It’s the end of an era! In the Life has aired its final episode and it’s about gay rhetoric.
Erin McKeown has a new album coming out in January and she’s released one of its songs called “Proof.” One of the songs on MANIFESTRA was co-written “via text message with longtime friend Rachel Maddow.” That should be interesting!
