Morning Brew – Thurs. April 21: Kalinda and Lana could have had so much more, Sarah Waters says Kate Middleton is a lesbian icon

Austin-based band Zorch was profiled on NPR this week, which tipped me off to their song “Lesbian Seagull.” It’s not really that gay, but it’s my duty to inform you of its existence.

Sarah Waters says that Kate Middleton is a lesbian icon. She told The Daily Telegraph: “There is something quite earthy about her which, I think, lesbians will like.” I really don’t find her that earthy, but she’s also too feminine for my tastes.

Kiwi comedian Urzila Carlson is nominated for the Billy T Awards at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival. It’d be huge for her and she doesn’t mind if she doesn’t win. She tells GayNZ.com: “I’m just going to milk it for all it’s worth.” That’s the spirit!

The lesbian moms are back on Nurse Jackie this week, but they don’t come bearing good news. (Also, yes, that’s Judith Light and not Blythe Danner. Blythe had scheduling conflicts so they swapped her, soap opera style.)

This has to be the first lesbian divorce on TV. Am I right?

Alison Louder played a lesbian on a few episodes of SyFy’s Being Human last year. We were hoping for more, but at least it was renewed for a second. (Hint, hint SyFy!) Curve talked with the actress about playing gay and here’s what she had to say:

I have absolutely no concerns about playing any sexuality whatsoever. I’ll just put it out there: I’m not gay, but I also think that my perspective on sexuality and gender has evolved a lot over the years because I’m friends with a lot of transgendered people who both in the process of transitioning or have already transitioned. I supported a couple of friends through that process. I have a lot of queer friends, gay friends, lesbian friends. So for me I don’t really look at sexuality as being something that is where the genders are implicitly binary, so that’s something I’m constantly reading about, constantly learning about, constantly talking about with people.

Of course she’s not a lesbian — that’s why she got a role playing one on TV!

Jodie Foster told The LA Times why she thinks there are so many more male directors getting projects than females in Hollywood. She said:

I don’t think it’s a plot and these guys sat around and said let’s keep these women out. I think it’s like race psychology. When a producer hires a director, you’re hiring away your control completely. You’re bringing on somebody that will change everything. When you give that amount of power up, you want them to look like you and talk like you and think like you and it’s scary when they don’t, because what’s gonna happen? I’m gonna hand over $60 million to somebody I don’t know. I hope they look like me.

Similar to how we feel when we’re giving our time and money to watch movies, looking for a successful lesbian actress — I get it!

Amber Tamblyn said she had some of her own wishes for what would happen with her and Olivia Wilde on House. “I was hoping that Martha would propose to Thirteen in her last episode — like, let’s just go crazy and turn this into a different show, and Masters is this person nobody ever knew!” Since she didn’t follow that up with “And then it all came true,” I’m assuming this doesn’t happen.

I am mad at Jill Flint. The actress has a role on Royal Pains, which didn’t allow her to film much of The Good Wife this year. And because of that, we missed out on some good stuff with Kalinda and Lana. Exec. producer Robert King told TVLine: ” We had a whole plotline built for [those two] — oh my gosh, we had such a good plotline. But Royal Pains wouldn’t let Jill go, so we were bereft.” OK, Jill, it’s not your fault, but you obviously hate lesbians and happiness.

The New Gay did an interview with Young Galaxy and found out their drummer, Andrea Stone, is a gay lady. Now there’s even more reason to love their new album Shapeshifting.
