Morning Brew – The real life lesbian who inspired “A League of Their Own” dies

Good morning! Hope you had a nice Labor Day. Were you able to watch Diana Nyad complete her record-breaking swim? She went on CBS This Morning to talk about her experience.

Vicci Martinez did a “visual interview” with DITLO where she answers some fun questions like “How much can you bench press?” BTW here she is in bed.

Have you ever wanted to see Ellen DeGeneres as a sloth? Of course you haven’t. Well here she is anyway, courtesy of Shitty Water Color.

Speaking of Ellen, she’s announced some of the guests she’ll have on when her show returns September 9. First up: Leah Remini.

The National Enquirer has a hot tip on a story that lesbians are boycotting Rizzoli & Isles until Angie Harmon agrees to kiss Sasha Alexander. My favorite part is this “quote” from an anonymous source:

“Angie’s fed up that other women – especially gay women – see her as being butch. And she doesn’t like being seen as the ‘husband’ in her relationship with Sasha. It irritates her to no end!”
This person just watched Conan, read Angie’s interview in MORE and made the rest of that shit up. I hope they didn’t pay her too much.

Mary Cheney says her sister Liz is “dead wrong” about issues of same-sex marriage, after Liz spoke out against it becoming legal last week. Mary is married to her partner of several years. How fucked up is that her sister would say it isn’t right? That’s going to be an awkward Thanksgiving dinner this year.

A new club in London is touting “lesbians” among its attractions, but it isn’t a gay bar. I doubt they even hired real gay women to play the roles of “lesbians.”

What did your favorite author like to snack on? Out illustrator Wendy MacNaughton has a handy chart for you to review.

Buzzfeed has a list of the 10 Most Hated Lesbian/Bi Characters. Hate is such a strong word!

Melissa Etheridge and Tammy Lynn Michaels were fighting over if their twins should be vaccinated and the judge ruled they’d both have to agree upon it to happen, so they will not be. Melissa 1, Tammy 0.

I can’t wait to see Ass Backwards. I love Sandy Martin pulling up on the bike as the bad ass lesbian who takes Casey Wilson and June Diane Raphael to her commune.

Josephine D’Angelo, the pro baseball player who inspired the Dottie Hinson character in A League of Their Own, died at age 88 this week. From her Sun-Times obituary:

Though she had begun to identify herself as lesbian, she followed the league’s strict rules… which included the barring of “freaks” and “Amazons.” Ms. D’Angelo stayed away from the league’s “gay crowd” and dressed in feminine attire.

But it all came to a halt at the end of her second season, when a team official “approached her in the hotel lobby and told her she had been released. The reason? D’Angelo had gotten a severe, or, in her own words, ‘butchy’ haircut.”

Rest in peace, JoJo.

The OUTMusic Awards is hosting a Kickstarter to raise $200,000 in order to support and award LGBT musicians for their contributions to the industry.
