JD Samson is interviewed in METAL this month where she talks about how she got inspired to start making art, why she began DJing and the different kinds of crowds she plays to. Here she is on her idea of “a social safety net”:
A “social safety net” in that case refers to a group of people that are feminists, queers or allies. That means we are safe to be vulnerable. To move our bodies and not be criticized for that. To not take someone down for their beliefs or ways of identifying. And safe to be smart and intellectual people that want to have a good time and feel free. I think sometimes I find myself out at clubs where the criticism is visible. I see men hitting on women who aren’t interested and they are aggressive. I see people making fun of others for their gender performance, style, or their desire to not drink alcohol. All of these things make partying a chore, rather than an expression of yourself and moving your body and sharing the moment of joy.
