Morning Brew – Robin Roberts opens up about her partner in “People”

Good morning!

Today’s #TBT is dedicated to Lea Delaria, who appeared on a 1994 episode of Matlock called “Dead Air.”

4-Non Blondes is reuniting for this year’s An Evening with Women at the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center. Margaret Cho is hosting the festivities, and it should be a good one.

“Do you think you are the toughest, smartest, gayest lesbian in Los Angeles?” Then you should probably sign up for the Lezlympics.

IndieWire has a list of 7 LGBT films to see at Tribeca this year, and includes interviews with the filmmakers. Life Partners is the only explicitly female-focused film, and director Susanna Fogel talked about setbacks in shooting.

“The biggest challenge in this process was, ironically, related to exciting and relevant political progress. When we initially developed Life Partners, first as a short play in 2011, then as a feature we workshopped at the Sundance Writers Lab, the politics (and political inequality) of one friend being a lesbian and the other one straight were a central focus of the plot. Although thematically the film is about an evolving friendship and the sexualities are incidental, the politics of that time contextualized it. And then, midway through the editing process, DOMA was overturned. As thrilled as we all were, we found ourselves faced with an unforeseen challenge as filmmakers: was our film suddenly going to become a period piece? Should it be one? What would be the most emotionally effective, progressive story we could tell given the change in the Zeitgeist? Ultimately, we chose to deemphasize the politics and keep the movie present-day, favoring the emotional journey of the friends. I’m hoping the result is that we’ve ended up with a film that normalizes a gay-straight friendship without overly politicizing the sexualities, making for a more accessible and contemporary film.

A good problem to have, I guess!

Rosie O’Donnell is returning to The View to say goodbye to Baba Wawa.

Does being a hot girl automatically mean you can pick up other hot girls, even if they are straight? This hot girl put this theory to the test.

Robin Roberts is on the cover of People this week and discussing her girlfriend Amber Laign.

“Even though Amber is someone who shies away from the spotlight, it was important for me to let people know I have this person in my life.”

Speaking of coming out, Melissa Etheridge told a reporter about the days when she would have to cover her tracks, and how much it sucked.

“I would always use nonspecific, genderless pronouns. People always asked me if a song was about a boyfriend. A guy interviewed me once and changed all the pronouns in my songs. I came up playing in gay bars, so a lot of people knew I was gay. It made me look like a liar.”

The truth will set you free.

Meanwhile, Cameron Diaz may be attracted to women sometimes, but she is not bisexual. When asked if she could ever be in a relationship with a woman, here’s what she said:

That’s not at all what I said. That’s not what I was saying. That’s what people are (saying). What I’m saying is that I can appreciate the beauty of another woman. I’ve said this forever: I think women’s bodies are beautiful – all shapes, all sizes. Every part of a woman is beautiful and that’s something that we’ve celebrated culturally throughout history.

"The Other Woman" Sydney Photo Call

There you have it. She thinks you’re pretty but she just can’t do the damn thing.

If Brittney Griner remade Space Jam I would probably pass out in excitement.

Speaking of BG, ESPN has a great piece on her time in China during the WNBA off-season.

Karen Spencer (aka Joanna Johnson) returned to The Bold and the Beautiful this week! She’s torn between her ex-sister-in-law Katie, who is the HBIC of Spencer Publications, and her brother’s girlfriend Brooke, who wants to see Katie fail.

It’s so hard to be a power lesbian.
