Morning! It’s May — aka there should be absolutely no more of me saying “I’m cold!” if all is right in the world.
This weekend several of our favorite women showed up at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, looking lovely.
Jane Lynch and wife Lara Embry
After-party Bartender Rachel Maddow
The Telegraph asked Anne Heche if Ellen DeGeneres is the only lesbian relationship she’s ever had. Her response:
Oh, jeepers. Yes! Yes! I mean, that’s been way out there for years.
Jeepers? Jeepers. I say “jeepers” to the article, which details her relationship with Ellen as the reason her career tanked in the ’90s.
The UK is considering a new ban on sexually explicit content on TV until after 9 p.m. Apparently this includes “lesbian kisses” on soaps like Brookside, which featured a kiss between two women in 1994. Apparently tons of teens have been influenced by this and will never, ever get over it. Therefore, Corrie, Glee and other shows with gay women will have to be pushed past 9 p.m. Leave it to Corrie‘s Brooke Vincent to have a comment about this ridiculousness. She expressed herself via Twitter, writing:
I swear David Cameron’s meant to be supporting equal rights. I just think if same-sex kisses are what he is prioritising and concentrating on changing, our country’s in trouble.
Indeed. If they’re going to push lesbian kissing into “adult time” territory, they should move all kissing past 9. That’ll make for a lot of crappy programming all day and evening then!
The Boston Globe has a profile of out lesbian police officer Pamela Besold. She’s part of GOAL, Gay Officers Action League of New England, who seek to make sure law enforcement are up to speed on the LGBT community and there is no police brutality or hate crimes happening like there has been in the past. This is why I tear up every time I see the gay cops in the Pride Parade!
People are harassing the Brooklyn-based maternity store that is giving lesbian moms a discount. The Brooklyn Paper reports, “In a one-week period, [Karen] Paperno says she’s fielded five crazed callers — mostly homophobes from out of state — who have spewed hate speech and even threatened to hurt her.” Wow, at a store for baby clothes. Seriously. She’s not being swayed, however — the discount for mombians stays.
Out NYC-based artist Hilary Harkness was so inspired by Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, she has created a series of paintings around them. She will be showing off “New Paintings” at The Mary Boone Gallery in Midtown now through June 5. She says of her inspiration:
“I was born in ’71 and during that time, in the Midwest, we had no lesbian role models. I had lesbian neighbors of whose relations were never spoken — my parents felt they needed to protect me from the knowledge of those relationships. Alice and Gertrude had a strong bond — Alice served Gertrude her entire life. And it was overlooked by society.
New. Favorite. Artist. If you’re in NYC, check it out.
R.I.P. Joanna Russ, lesbian sci-fi writer who died at the age of 74 recently. GayNz.com notes she is most famous for her book The Female Man (1975).
Lady Gaga is going around and leaving her mark on women with her lips — literally.
There are not enough gay women on The Voice! We need at least three, you say? We’re in luck! Out singer/songwriter Sia has joined the show as a coach to help out some of the contestants as they prepare for dueling duets in the coming weeks. Since Sia has worked with Christina Aguilera before, she might just be working with Xtina’s team, but you never know! Other artists that will appear on the show include Monica and Reba McEntire.
Four films with lesbian content top ScreenJunkies’ list of “10 Hot Scenes from French Movies.” That’s almost half, friends. Gotta love the French.
