Morning Brew – Monday, May 14: “Doctor Who” boss reveals River Song is bisexual, “Desperate Housewives” boss slaps lesbian fans in the face on the way out the door

Good morning, Brewbies; welcome to Monday!

Over the weekend, Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat had a Twitter conversation in which he revealed that The Doctor’s current/past/future — time travel is complicated! — love interest, River Song, is bisexual. A fan asked what The Doctor would say about President Obama coming out in support of marriage equality, and Moffat answered: “You’d have to explain gay to him first. Then straight! Then why you were still talking when there’s ALL THESE SPACESHIPS!!” Another fan asked how The Doctor could be could be confused about “gay vs. straight” when he’s had a romantic relationship with River Song and a platonic relationship with Torchwood‘s resident omnisexual Captain Jack Harkness. To which the Moff replied:

Moffat lives by Captain Jack’s label-eschewing motto — “You people and your quaint little categories” — to my great delight, because it results in fascinating, complicated characters like my beloved River Song and Sherlock‘s self-professed gay dominatrix Irene Adler.

Last night the women of Desperate Housewives bid their adieus to Wisteria Lane, and on the way out the door, they slapped their lesbian fans right in the face. Dana Delaney‘s Katherine returned to the show for the finale just to let everyone know that: a) she’d broken up with Robin, and b) she wasn’t into women anymore. The reveal was an unnecessary bummer from every angle, including the fact that Delaney has been an outspoken advocate of Katherine and Robin’s relationship, telling fans and the press that she wanted the characters to stay together, that it would be a nice change of pace to be a happy lesbian character.

Alas, the lovely Delaney must not have read the standard “Death and Dismemberment” clause that is added to every actor’s contract once her character comes out as a gay lady. (Mega props to TheLinster for sticking with the show long after its expiration date so our readers could stay informed about any lesbian story morsels.)

Speaking of lesbian bloodbaths, last night HBO has released the first trailer for season five of True Blood and it kicks right off with Tara’s shotgun wound and Sookeh’s misery. There’s also some titillating lesbian action sprinkled throughout if you don’t blink.

Tom Gabel, the lead singer for the Florida-based punk band Against Me has revealed to Rolling Stone that she has been dealing with gender dysmorphia for years and will soon begin gender reassignment. According to Rolling Stone, Gabel is the first “major rock star [to] come out as transgender.” Also:

Gabel will eventually take the name Laura Jane Grace, and will remain married to her wife Heather. “For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news,” says Gabel. “But she’s been super-amazing and understanding.”

What a great thing for transgender visibility! You can check out the full story in the most recent issue of Rolling Stone, which hit newsstands on Friday. (Thanks for the tip, Brietta.)

Congratulations are in order for AfterEllen.com favorite Liz Feldman, who proposed to girlfriend Rachel Cantu last week and let everyone in on the celebration via Facebook. Mazel tov, you two!
